Title: Excellent Laptop - Almost
Posted16 January 2013
Yes, I would recommend this product
Bought this computer Nov 1 and used it every day since. It came with Windows 7, which I intended to upgrade with the cheap upgrade offer to Win 8 Pro from Microsoft. If I didn't like Win 8 I could easily put it back to Win 7. My laptop is i5 version 8GB, 32GB mSATA, AMD Video card, and 500GB HD 7200RPM.
I bought a 1TB Samsung HD and cloned the hard drive with Acronis and installed the new hard drive. If I didn't like Win 8 I would just replace the original HD. I partitioned the remaining space on the new drive to make my data drive. I set up computer with software I was going to use, downloaded all the Win8 drivers to new partition and proceeded to do the Windows 8 upgrade.
All went well for the upgrade, most devices were found and installed by operating system. The missing devices were all fixed by installing the new Win 8 drivers. The only problem with doing the upgrade was windows update was not installing all the updates. This was a problem many were having with various computer brands I found by goggling the problem. After about three weeks trying to fix, I gave up and did a clean install.
Everything now is mostly working with Windows 8. A few observations.
Pros
-Very fast computer, boots in about 30 seconds because of Intel rapid start.
-Like back light keyboard.
-Good bright screen 720P, larger icons for older eyes.
-Solid feeling computer, like the basic colors.
-All software has run OK so far.
-No loud fan noise that others have mentioned.
-Fingerprint reader works way better than previous laptop.
-Descent speakers for a laptop computer
Cons
-Intel WIDI still not working, even after new drivers released this week.
-AMD video driver quits working quite often
-(these problems will likely be addressed with driver updates, which are starting to be posted in the last week or so)
A Few Tips
-If upgrading to Win 8 do a clean install
-I installed a start menu immediately. It helps in getting around in Win 8. You now have the latest operating system with classic look. You can easily switch back and forth to get used to the Windows 8 desktop.
This is by far the best laptop I have used. I like the Bluetooth for use with a mouse and the USB 3 makes transferring data so much faster. Web cam has a good picture, although I don't use it much. All in all a very good computer.
Pros:internet, photography, e-mail
