I had upgraded our old Poweredge 2800/2900 to new T610 and wow what a difference. They run as smooth as can be, very pleased with Pro Support and the timely delivery.

Fan noise can be a problem, otherwise great

In many respects this machine is excellent. I'd like a few more memory slots - I'm using this mostly to virtualise a lab setup and 8gb chips are too expensive to consider out of my own pocket. As it is, I think I'll have to add the second processor to enable me to go past 24gb.
In fact, the only real problem I have is fan noise.
In general, the unit is quite quiet, but often, and for no apparent reason (cpu / io spikes for example), the fans spin up, and it's noisy enough that concentrating is impossible. Fan noise seems to be a recurring comment on these reviews.
The BIOS should have more aggressive power management and the expense of performance. I'd like an option that says 'quiet as you can'.

Superb, quiet and fast server

I recently became the proud owner of one of these PowerEdge T610 servers for use with my small software development business.
Overall I am extremely happy with the purchase though I wish I'd done some in-depth research before clicking 'Buy'. For instance, the RD1000 tape drive is not compatible with SBS 2008 Backup system. Also the H700 RAID controller is excellent but restricts your use of drives to Dell drives only - the PERC 6/i is also an excellent card and allows you to use any brand of drive. If only I'd known that at the time....
In terms of noise, Dell have really made some excellent progress - this server is as noisy as an average workstation, even when under a reasonable load. I am incredibly impressed with that - servers are usually unnecessarily loud.
Highly recommended - buy it and you won't be disappointed. Delivery was VERY fast too - ordered on the Friday and delivered the next week on Thursday. But I have heard MANY horror stories about Walsh Western - I was lucky to have a direct trailer to TNT for my server.
Pros:software development, small business server 2008

Very capable and scalable server. Using it for VMWare ESXi 4.0 server. Setup option for optimsation is great. Everything is very clearly labelled. Solid chassis and internals. Very impressed with this server. Considering buying another for VMWare fault tolerance suite.
Pros:business, testing, proof of concept network setups
