Greate L2 Switch/Core

PostedJanuary 18, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
My company uses 2x 8024s as the core of our VM freight network with 10GB uplinked to 4x 6248s. The network is used for V-motion, Fault Tolerance, iSCSI, and backup. Long story short the network works without issue for layer-2. We only use a limited number of advanced features specifically QoS and iSCSI.
If you're looking for a switch infrastructure to support VMware layer2 back-end networks the 8024 and 6248 get the job done at a reasonable price.

Good switches for the price

PostedJuly 18, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
The PowerConnect series of switches have been very reliable for my company. We have about a dozen between the 3xxx and 6xxx series. None have failed so far from bad manufacturing. We are in a very dirty environment, so that is impressive. The firmware updates have resolved most of the earlier issues. We have 6 vlans and over 400 devices connected to these switches. We also use the 6xxx series for OSPF routing. I will be purchasing one of the 10G copper switches soon and expect it to perform like the rest.

Basic switching OK, nothing else should be trusted

PostedJuly 2, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
We use a large number of products from the Powerconnect series, M6220, 6248, 8024F, M8024 etc.
These switches are OK for L2 switching, but anything else we try to use is perhaps documented (poorly) and then does not work as expected. Very disappointing.
SSH public key login, documented - doesn't work
sflow - barely works, and cannot be made permanent
New releases of software firmware, is becoming better with M6220/M8024 but for the 6248 - a new release in hmmm every 3 years? (exaggerating a bit, but too rare releases).
We will probably move core networking to J-series/Juniper switches.
Pros:hosting and servers, core networks switches
