Do Not Buy (New or Used)

PostedAugust 16, 2012
No, I do not recommend this product.
After approximately one year of use you will notice several severe issues with this product: poor materials selection for the case = cracks in the case, poor battery life, poor system performance, and lack of support for replacement parts.

Best. Laptop. Tablet. Ever.

PostedSeptember 8, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
I'll keep this review short and sweet. I've been using personal computers for work and for home needs since the early 1980s. Apple, IBM, Sun Workstations. This machine is my favorite. The Daylight Viewable Screen is a must - don't get the plain LED version.
Small enough to be easily portable. Powerful enough to handle most business chores. I don't recommend it for high end gaming, not what this machine is about. It's also super reliable, never crashes with Windows 7. The Intel 5300 wireless card grabs the farthest/weakest wifi signals with ease. Bluetooth lets me use VoIP. I've never met a video file I couldn't play smoothly. Battery life is terrific. I've owned this machine for 2 years now. I'd love an overclock option or a newer i5 type processor, but with the trend toward slate computing, I don't see this model being refreshed, unfortunately. I upgraded to 5 gigs in total ram. Looking for a good deal on an SSD and that will both improve performance and battery life. I highly recommend the XT2.
Pros:business documents, video watching, web browsing, graphic design / photo editing

Good computer but digitizer is sub-standard

PostedApril 27, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
As a notebook computer the XT2 is a fine machine. It's fast, light, compact, boots quickly. It's even sturdy; I have hauled mine all over the world, shoving it in overhead bins, without a hint of trouble.
Unfortunately, the digitizer is poor. It is slower and less responsive than past HP tablets I have owned. It's usually necessary to push a button or link 2-3 times before it responds. The cursor sometimes jumps around when I write, leaving random streaks across the screen. Sometimes the digitizer stops working cold; it ceases to respond to the stylus at all until I reboot.
I have decided to keep my XT2 and make do. But my next tablet will definitely not be one of these.

XT2

PostedOctober 18, 2010
Yes, I would recommend this product
I could not find much info when researching the best tablet for my needs (academic & note-taking), so took a leap-of-faith on the XT2. This is my first tablet, so do not have a comparison, but I cannot imagine a better tablet. There are cheaper tablets, but I needed high quality handwriting capabilities w/ multi-touch capabilities and a SSD (for a low-heat, quiet drive to make the tablet double as an e-reader; maybe the tablet is heavier than a Kindle, but it is a lot lighter than carrying several textbooks!). The price of a new XT2 is pretty high, but most tablets with multi-touch and SSDs were not much cheaper; however, I bought mine "sold as new" from the outlet and paid half the normal price (and my wallet and I have been very happy with that decision). I do not have info on heavy graphics use applications (e.g., gaming), since I have not tried it.
Pros: impressive handwriting recognition (no need to "train" it); sleek chassis w/ clear, bright screen (DLV); the SSD runs quietly and puts out very low heat; kinetic stylus (no batteries to worry about); easy to navigate menus/programs in tablet mode, both landscape and portrait orientation capabilities
Cons: price (if bought new), battery life (6-cell) is only about 3 hours (but recharges quickly), no built-in web-cam.
Recommendations: Stick with default calibration, which is already accurate (rather than calibrating it yourself). Mine started opening and minimizing windows randomly, which was exceedingly annoying, but was completely fixed once I reseat to default calibration settings.
Recommendation: Upgrade RAM to the highest your OS will allow to improve multi-touch performance. Crucial sells good quality, compatible after-market RAM for extremely reasonable prices. Also, many tablets are glitchy if using Vista, but fixed upon upgrading to Win 7 (and Vista on a tablet when Win 7 is released simply does not make sense!).
Pros:academic, handwriting and note-taking, e-reader, internet research

The Ultimate Notebook Computer!

PostedOctober 15, 2010
Yes, I would recommend this product
I’ve had the XT2 for one year. I wrote a review 11 months ago.
My verdict now is STILL THE SAME = the best notebook computer I’ve owned in 20+ years of on-the-road, hardcore notebook computing.
Here’s a repeat of my earlier review + 2 updates.
I’m an international lawyer. I travel constantly. I was an early adopter of pen computing (I owned a notebook called a GRiD in the early 1990’s) to write notes by hand on my screen and not drag piles of paper notes around, yet still have a real keyboard.
When convertible tablet PC’s re-appeared, I bought the XT2 because it offered the right combination of features.
PRO's:
Pen input (for note-taking) with a high-quality keyboard (for typing), combined with a capacitive touchscreen (for navigation on a moving plane or train) and a solid state hard drive (because travel destroys a hard drives' moving parts).
Other tablets don’t fit easily into briefcases because of their odd shapes, and they have input methods (trackballs, etc.) less suitable for bumpy plane rides than a pen or finger.
The XT2 has the multitouch screen AND a sleeker exterior form.
My XT2 combines a 1.6 processor, 4G of RAM, a 128G solid state hard drive, and Vista Business + Windows 7 upgrade. With that mix, all of Dell’s propaganda about the XT2 is 100% accurate. All of it, every single bit. How can I say this more clearly? No compromise. None, zip, nada.
Perhaps not with machines less fully equipped -- more about that below -- but I’m entirely satisfied with the XT2.
CON's:
The negative comments in the other reviews here are the result of: (a) trying to use anything other than Windows 7 to handle what the XT2 offers; (b) purchasing anything less than the 1.6 processor; and (c) thinking that 1G of RAM is enough. It makes NO sense to save a few bucks on the OS and hardware but then complain in a review that it won’t give full performance!
That brings me to the thing I truly dislike about this machine. It annoys me that Dell EVER offered the XT2 with slower processors, inadequate RAM, slower hard drives, etc.. If Dell had limited the XT2 to the specs it needs to perform at full capacity then all the other reviews here would’ve been just as good as this one.
Dell didn’t. Because of that, the XT2 is NOT as well known or as well regarded as it should be. Dumb move, Dell. Really dumb, because with the right combination of OS and hardware, the XT2 is the ultimate notebook.
Update #1: A note about my experience with Dell Gold Support: my charger quit working at 4:45 PM. I called Dell support, and at 8:45 AM THE NEXT MORNING Fed Ex knocked at my door with a replacement charger. Free, under warranty.
Update #2: The new Dell tablet coming soon is BASED UPON the XT2 concept (keyboard + tablet). But it seems to have a 10-inch screen, with a smaller keyboard too.
I anticipate that'll be too small for everyday computing as a real office replacement, at least for me. So I'll stick with the XT2 instead of "upgrading" to the smaller-screen new tablet.
Pros:work, "on-the-road" office, Travel

Nice laptop, not great as a tablet

PostedJune 25, 2010
Yes, I would recommend this product
I got this machine, spending much more than I would have if I was just buying a portable laptop (5GB, WIn7, 150GB drive). The machine is nice. WIndows 7 runs nicely and I am really happy with how it works .I would give this a 5 stars ...as a laptop.
The reason I gave this 3 stars is that the machine is not great as a Tablet. The screen developed a phantom touch in the top right and this kept clicking buttons on apps (Word, Firefox) till it made the system almost unusable. Dell Support was pretty good, they came by and replaced the screen..this fixed the problem somewhat but did not eliminate it.
So at this time, just to get on with work, I just have all the tablet functionality turned off! I now use it as a laptop.
I had visions of grading papers, marking up pdf files using the system as a table etc. that clearly have not materialized. Recently, the IT group quarantined my laptop as it apparently had a virus. I just got it back...and in the reinstall of WIn 7, they forgot to load the Dell Control Point, NTrig driver etc. that are needed for the tablet functionality. Given the fact that I was not using the tablet features, I am not bothering to have them load it. Besides, my 147 GB drive is almost full...I wish I had got a larger capacity drive.
So I am a reasonably happy user..and since I got a 4 year warranty, look forward to using this ..as a laptop...for quite a while.

Medium to poor

No, I do not recommend this product.
I ordered and the product arrived within the stated time, however within the first two weeks I had an occasion, twice, to reboot the machine as the screen developed streaks across the bottom 2cm. A call to Dell Tech Support and they recommended uploading the new BIOS, which I did and then started the problem of loosing the screen altogether.
Another call to Dell. Their technician came and replace the M/B, and low and behold now not only do I randomly loose screen but occasionally keyboard and WiFi.
Another call to Dell who have now decided to replace the laptop. With less than one month into the purchase this machine is yet to enspire and confidence.
Pros:demo and general.

Good but not great

PostedMarch 29, 2010
Yes, I would recommend this product
I've owned the XT2 for eight months and used its pen input features extensively. Overall this is a computer that is good but not great. It's major weakness is the screen.
If you are considering this notebook buy all the upgrades (SSD and 2MB ram). I did not and wound up doing so anyway. The SSD not only makes programs load quicker, it increased my battery life by a third. With wifi and bluetooth turned off I get a whopping six hours of battery life with the six cell battery. With them turned on I get four hours. With wifi and bluetooth turned on and the standard hard drive, three hours.
The biggest weakness to this computer really isn't a Dell hardware problem per se but the fact that Dell elected to go with the N-Trig for the touchscreen. Better get used to that name now because if you buy this computer to use the screen for input you will get much more intimate with N-trig than you ever wanted to. To put it simply, the driver for the hardware is awful. Take a look at the N-Trig website to see the list of problems. And that only touches the surface. There are times when N-trig makes the computer unusable. The most recent driver update is progress but it is by no means a solution.
The other major weakness of this product for those using the pen input is that the screen angles are poor; the color shifts badly. If you are using this for animation (which I dabble in) the XT2 must be facing you directly or the color degradation makes using it impossible.
If you are seeking a notebook where the screen is going to be your key method of input I would hesitate to recommend this product. If your view of the pen and touch input is that they are nifty feature that will be fun to play with but which you don't intend to use heavily then the XT2 is for you.
I want to make clear that I'm not throwing my XT2 in the trash. I just want to be clear that if you are looking to use the pen input and expecting a hassle free experience you will be disappointed. I'm glad I bought the XT2 from a productivity point of view. But the poor screen and pen input drop this down to good from great.
Pros:animation, office, drawing

After using Thinkpad X60 for 4 years, I decided to go with Tablet pc since I read ebooks and lots of pdf file in my office or on the road. After researching about mutitouch screen, I finally decided order and received the actual TX2 after 11 days of waiting with One Business day shipping.
The look is geourgeous. It looks very sleek and modern. My friends in my office kept asking me what this is. Lots of praise about the look.
I'm now able to read ebook without mouse. I just simply use my two fingers to move pages up and down. It's very convenient and very responsive to my finger touch. Stylus could be much better, but no complaint about performance.
So far, speed of computer is very good. It's maybe due to Solid State Drive that I configured. I noticed a significant difference in booting and response time with SSD drive. It's expensive, but I think it's well worth it. I assume the price will go down as time goes by.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this tablet pc. I've been using about a week now. With this price, you could buy a better laptop computer. However, multitouch screen functionality would give me lots of flexibility and convenience for my needs for extensive ebook and pdf read. Although I still don't like to take a note on this tablet pc with included stylus, I guess I'll get used to it.

Better than XT but where is the webcam?

PostedJanuary 27, 2010
No, I do not recommend this product.
The XT2 is definitely a huge improvement over the XT simply because most of the drivers actually work! I have used both and I would have kept the XT2 if they had built in a webcam this time. Maybe everyone has enough money to purchase the XT2 and another laptop with a webcam for video chat but I am absolutely lost as to why Dell left this option out. Every other major tablet manufacturer has a webcam option and it is this short-mindedness that will keep me from Dell for a long time.

Best notebook computer in 20+ years!

PostedOctober 28, 2009
Yes, I would recommend this product
I’ve had the XT2 for a month. My verdict = the best notebook computer I’ve ever owned in over 20 years of on-the-road, around-the-world, hardcore notebook computing.
I’m an international lawyer. I travel constantly. I was an early adopter of pen computing (I owned a pen-based notebook called a GRiD in the early 1990’s) to write notes by hand on my screen and not drag piles of paper notes around, yet still have a real keyboard.
When convertible tablet PC’s re-appeared, I followed them closely. I then bought the XT2 because it finally offered the right combination of features.

Lenovo tablets don’t fit easily into briefcases because of their odd shapes, and have interfaces unsuitable for bumpy plane rides.
The XT2 has the multi-touch screen AND a sleeker exterior form.
The best part? I didn't pay full price. I bought it from the Dell Outlet Store. I just called ‘em up and got fantastic support from Frank and Sandy there, who tracked inventory for me until the right machine came along at nearly half price.
Even though it’s from the “outlet” my XT2 appeared to have never been powered on and it has no surface blemishes.
My XT2 combines a 1.6 processor, 4M of RAM, a 128G solid state hard drive, and Vista Business with the Windows 7 upgrade.
Cons:
The negative comments in other reviews are the result of: (a) trying to use Microsoft XP when only Vista and/or Windows 7 can handle what the XT2 offers; (b) purchasing the 1.2 processor when the 1.4 or 1.6 is really what’s needed; and (c) thinking that 1G of RAM is enough.
Don’t try to save a few bucks on the OS and hardware but then complain that it won’t give full performance!
That brings me to the thing I truly dislike about this machine. It annoys me that Dell offers the XT2 with slower processors, inadequate RAM, slower hard drives and Windows XP. Excellent Tablet

PostedOctober 23, 2009
Yes, I would recommend this product
Due to school requirements, I was forced to purchase a tablet PC. After what seemed like months of researching, I settled with the XT2. At first I was more than impressed with the features but after a few weeks, the tablet functions were more of a hassle than a useful feature. Once the drivers were updated, things got better. Because of a Microsoft campus agreement, I was able to install Windows 7 early. Windows 7 on this machine is perfect. With both the multitouch screen and pen inputs, the Windows 7 experience is amazing. After seeing other tablets on campus and hearing of the many problems they have, I am happy I went with the XT2.
Pros:
Amazing multitouch support (improved with Windows 7)
Dell Driver Support up to date
Not bloated with unnecessary software
Light weight
Great design
Cons:
Lack of internal disk drive
one way rotating tablet
eraser button too small (not at end of pen)
Overall, I would highly recommend this tablet over any other brand or model. The lack of an internal disk drive isn't as big of a drawback as one might expect. If you need a tablet this is it. However, if you require large graphics and processing power for games or video editing, don't look at tablets as an option; no brand or model offers enough power to handle that application.

No, I do not recommend this product.
I would not purchase this product, If I did not have to. I needed a tablet, and I had to have a tablet with XP installed. Dell is one of the few left. The finger shrinking, expanding and rotation just does not work. I don't know why they advertise the feature at all. It does not work. The operation of the computer is buggy, and laggy at times. Most importantly, after only two weeks of operation my hard drive crashed. The hard drive crashed while I was backing up and I lost a good amount of information. I am now a believer of off site backup services The customer service was good, but I find the Indian accent difficult to understand. When they sent me out a new hard drive they said it would come formatted, it wasn't, and I had to install everything, OS, drivers, etc. Simply put the computer does not work as advertised and for the price, I find it to be a poor value.

Great Piece of Hardware!

PostedSeptember 13, 2009
Yes, I would recommend this product
I've had this system for about two months now and love it. My first experience was not the greatest, it came loaded with XP Tablet and really disappointed me; it was slow, the screen was unresponsive and switching between finger input and stylus worked sometimes but not always. It came preloaded with a custom interface for managing the system features that appeared to be the culprit of the system speed issues and once I uninstalled that and used the mechanisms built into Windows XP, it worked great.
My real love for it came when I wiped the hard drive and installed Windows 7. This thing is awesome with 7. The multi-touch screen works great, it's lightning-fast, system standby and hibernate work great and happen quickly, and battery life is about 4 hours on the six-cell battery, under heavy use. I've had it sit on standby and last over the weekend. It starts up fast and stays cool to the touch. I've felt it heat up a little bit when the intake fan is covered, but nothing like other laptops I've had. I'm working on it now and the intake fan isn't even spinning, that's how cool it's running.
Pros:
Excellent laptop for Windows 7, takes advantage of all the new features. Fast, speedy, great battery life, good feel and grip on the plastics, lightweight and solid construction. All features work with Windows 7. Love the small power adapter as well, it's very easy to set up and put away.
Cons:
XP Tablet sucks on it as delivered from the factory. Also had some issues with finding drivers for Windows 7 for some of the security features, but eventually realized they were part of a package install available on the Dell website.
Overall Impression:
Good solid business laptop but either buy it with the Windows 7 upgrade or wait until it's released and comes as the main OS. XP Tablet is dated and it shows on this machine and Vista is...well, Vista.

(P.S. I'm writing about the first Latitude XT, not the second. But I will talk about the second one)
Topic: Hard-Drive
Hi! It is Thecoolest. Before I wrote this is a cool tablet. But now I say it is so and so. I say this because i got my computer on December 19 2008. But in March 21 2009, my hard-drive crashed. That is only 3 months and 2 days. And someone wrote about the mouse moving around crazy and lagging. That is happening right now as I'm writing this. The computer takes a long time to hibernate and process stuff. Hibernation takes about 6-7 minutes.(Just now my computer froze, AGAIN!!!) Any way, i did a diagnostics test and found out tons of errors including hard-drive failure, mouse problems, pointed stick problems(The little blue thing in the middle of the keyboard. I like making movies. I was hoping to get software to edit videos but then the computer crashed. But the funny thing is that i asked the technology teacher can you teach me how to replace one of these hard-drives and he did.(We have these tablets in school. Every student does) That night, my computer crashed. But now I'm going to back up my system and put in the new hard-drive.
Topic:Stylus and Touch screen.
The touch screen and pen is fine. But since my computer lags, it has problems. When i try doing my school work by using the stylus, when i try to draw a straight line, it makes tons of zig zags. And i tried to up date the computers touch screen to the new touch screen on the dell latitude xt2. But of these computers are the same. The only differences is better touch screen. There is like a little tab to pull the computer open and you have a option to get 5mb.
Topic: Tablet Features
The features are great including the touch screen. Also, the tablet buttons next to power button are good because it quickly launches. The tablet settings button is when you change change your tablet settings. Here you can change from pen mode, touch, or auto. Auto is when you can use both. I learned that in auto mode, you switch from pen to touch by double tapping the screen with your finger.
Topic: Computer Looks
This computer has a great finish and it is beautiful. It is smooth and I like the magnets that keep the computer closed. Also, the computer has a finger print reader which you can use to access your computer.
Pros:Connecting with Friends, Video Editing, Gaming, Music & Movies, School, Presentation, fun, ldc screen is great

Laptop is gorgeous, light weight and easy to use.
The screen/stylus work very well. It just takes some getting used to
learning all the features is still taking some time and there was no documentation that came with the laptop but it's pretty easy to figure things out.
I have found the laptop to be quite fast and have not had any hiccups in anything.
I would highly recommend this product...
