I recently purchased a refurbished Dell 14Z-5423 from the Dell Outlet website. It has the i7-3517U CPU, 8GB RAM, Windows 7, and 500GB HDD/32 GB SSD. The outlet did not say anything about the video card, but I was thrilled to see that this machine also included the AMD Radeon 7570M (in addition to the Intel HD4000 that comes with the 3rd generation i7 CPU). When I ordered, the Dell outlet had a great deal – only $583 (plus tax) for this machine (regular outlet price is $729, and I also used one of their 20% off coupons that come out every few weeks). Shipping was also free.
For $583, its an awesome machine. It was refurbished, but the machine looked absolutely brand new, and it has the same warranty as a new machine.
Note - prices will vary over-time. However, I've gotten many great deals from the Dell Outlet over the last few years. When they offer coupons, one can get a refurbished machine for as low as 50-60% of the MSRP price for the equivalent new machine from the regular Dell website.
Pros:
It's fast, very fast.
The wifi has worked flawlessly for me (I did immediately delete the McAffee anti-virus software that seems to have haunted other people's wifi).
I downloaded Steam and played “Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 2” at the full 1366x768 resolution and at maximum video settings. It works flawlessly, no lag, great detail, fast, etc. (I use the Radeon 7570M when gaming)
The display and speakers are quite adequate.
The weight, 4.12 pounds, is great for a fast machine that also has a DVD burner & dedicated video card.
Cons:
The battery life is just so-so. When using the machine for gaming in high performance mode (w/ the Radeon 7570M on & a fairly bright display), you can feel the heat, hear the fan, and the battery will only last 1-2 hours at most. The computer runs much longer when the machine is used for things like Microsoft Office work and using the “power saver” mode.
Dell charges an outrageous amount to get an extra AC adapter or a car adapter. (Much, much better 3rd party deals on adapters can be found on places like Amazon.com).
The video camera does not do well in low light
No VGA connector (the only external video connector is HDMI). This may complicate use with older KVM switches.
***
BOTTOM-LINE: Watch the Dell Outlet website for coupons. When they offer a coupon that works for the Dell Inspiron 14Z-5423, the deal is hard to beat. I've ordered 5 refurbished machines through the outlet over the last few years and have been delighted.
Pros:Travel, Gaming

The Laptop Overheats
PostedMay 15, 2013
No, I do not recommend this product.
Dell's laptops consistently overheat and the techs are unable to repair it. They have multiple errors and don't match competitors quality. The laptop as a whole is not worth the investment and would not recommend it to anyone.
Response from Dell.comBy SaraTforDell, Customer Reviews, May 20, 2013
Hello Computer123,
I am sorry to see that you are not happy with your new system. You may have already tried some of these, but here are some things you can do to help reduce system heat: http://dell.to/prsyvu.
This is not the experience we want you to have. Please reach out to our Social Media Support team through any of the following:
This laptop doesn't photograph well. It's much, much more beautiful in real life than it appears here. Applications launch pretty much instantly on the i7 model and it's thinner than one might expect after reading all of the "It's not an ultrabook RAWR!" reviews you can find scattered across the internet.
The instant on technology from intel is also far better than I expected. The computer usually turns on in about 1.2 seconds. I saw complaints about the wifi adapter before I bought this, but I have had no such issues. I've seen a lot of complaints about bloatware also, but I have actually never seen a computer so bloatware free. What little bloatware does exist is actually quite good (an application that lets you make recovery media, a store to upgrade internal components, a driver updater, etc).
There are a few legitimate issues of course. The keys are unusually spaced out, but it only took a few minutes to get used to. The screen is also quite glossy and therefore hard for people around you to see from angles. The skullcandy speakers are also very cheap and quiet, but I tend to use headphones anyway.
Overall, I had thought I was buying a cheap, low-quality computer to carry around for school, but this machine is far better than Dell claimed. Dell needs to spend a little more time on marketing their devices so that people understand how good they really are (and make their computers more photogenic).
Pros:very fast, lightweight, optical drive can be replaced with seccond ssd, decent battery life, dedecated graphics, fantastic graphics switching (to save battery), 2xusb3, sd card slot
Cons:glossy screen, very quiet speakers, no backlit keyboard

Inspiron 14z Ultrabook
PostedApril 30, 2013
No, I do not recommend this product.
Over the years I have used Dell computers on a regular basis through my place of employment. It was this experience, generally pretty good experience, that led me to look at purchasing the Ultrabook. Unfortunately, I have been seriously disappointed with the unit. Having purchased it for a family member who is attending University at the start of this school year (September) I looked for compact size, performance and an an additional video card to help with 3D images etc.. The unit works well for the application when it works! I am now shipping the computer back again for further service work as the system wont recognize the battery. As a result the computer only works when plugged in to the power cord. We have had a new hard drive and motherboard already so Dell has essentially rebuilt the unit in the 8 months we have had it.
When you drop this kind of coin on what is supposed to be a higher end system you expect that you get a quality product. I don't feel this way anymore.
The service provided by Dell has been good overall, maybe they are good at it for a reason as they have to fix them all the time?
Overall I am pretty disappointed in the overall build quality where what is supposed to be a higher end unit fails 3-4 times in less than 8 months.
Now I am really concerned that I should have purchased the extended warranty if these types of problems continue. Makes it really hard for me to recomend this product to anyone.
Pros:lightweight, fast, stylish
Cons:unreliable/breakdown

Really great!

Yes, I would recommend this product
I bought this laptop knowing that other people didn't like it. They said that they had problems when opening the computer for the second time, that it stuck on the Dell Logo. Well, i had this problem, but doing some researches on the internet, i found how to resolve the problem. Don't loose hope!!
I purchased a refurbished 14Z because it seemed to have the features I required at a reasonable price. However, I need a system with Windows 8 Pro. If you select the "View Details" link from the 14Z listing on the Dell Outlet refurbished Inspiron 14Z page, it clearly lists Windows 8 Pro as a feature of the 14Z. I purchased based on this.
My 14Z did not have Windows 8 Pro installed when it arrived. Dell Tech Support couldn't show me where it states a refurbished system would only have standard Windows 8. (I wouldn't be frustrated if it's clearly stated, and I had just missed or overlooked it.) Dell's only solution was to purchase an upgrade.
It's otherwise a very nice system. Performance with the 32gb ssd and Core i5 is excellent. The light weight of the system is very impressive considering it still has an optical drive and a very reasonable price point. The keyboard is little mushy for my tastes, but that's personal preference. The touch pad is very large and responsive, among the best of any I've used.
This would be a five star review if it had come with Windows 8 Pro, as the product details led me to believe it should. Great ultrabook. I just feel like I got less than I purchased.
Cons:windows 8 - not pro despite "view details" info
Response from Dell.comBy SaraTforDell, Customer Reviews, April 18, 2013
Hello jtallon,
Thank you for submitting your feedback. I am sorry if there was any misunderstanding with your operating system. The Inspiron 14z is currently sold new with an option for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro through our For Work site. The outlet sells our refurbished systems and they come with the OS they were shipped out with, so the configurations available change with the stock. This system can have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 8, or Windows 8 Pro available. When you select "Check Prices" you get a list of available configurations with a few of the major components, such as the operating system.
I am glad that overall, you are happy with your new systems build. It is always wonderful to hear that a system is preforming so well for your needs.
I got this Laptop around a week back. I read Couple of bad reviews about the laptop but thought that Dell would have learnt from its mistake and improved upon it but Dell failed me completely. It been only a week but its taking me around 10-12 mins to reach the Windows Login. After turning on the laptop, i see the windows welcome screen and then it goes black for 5 mins and then comes the Windows login page. After entering my password it takes around 5 mins for it to shows me the windows explorer. Pathetically Slow and awful. Never expected this from Dell.

Hello Harsh Shah,
I am sorry to hear that this system has not exceeded your expectations. If your system is running slower than you believe it should, I first recommend making sure your Windows is completely up to date. You can also run a free PC health check that can give you a report on how your PC can best be optimized (http://dell.to/n7DOGB).
If you continue to have concerns about your PC speed, please feel free to reach out to our support team. You can reach them in a variety of ways including:
Even though battery replacement is a little problem. It is one of the easiest machines to work on. I replaced a LED screen for a customer (very reasonable price led) It was the easiest Screen I have ever replaced! Just pop off the placstic (no screws) and undo w easily accessible screw and the cable and it is off. Love mine and very lightweight , fast. Is very thin yet has a DVD/RW. Love it !
Cons:battey life but it is a small machine not room for
This laptop is being marketed as an Ultrabook. The battery life after 5 days, on an avg., is 2 hours. Every thing else is fine. Build quality is good. Keyboard is sensitive (but good). Comes loaded with lot of software which I did uninstall.
Battery very very bad for an ultrabook.
Pros:usb 30, dvd drive, weight, sterdy build
Cons:battery

I have enjoyed using this laptop since I purchased it. I am very hard on the gadgets that I use because I am always on the go. And they go everywhere that I go. Despite the abuse this ultrabook is still running as well as it did the day I got it. Very happy with it. And for the price you couldn't ask for more.
Inspiron 14z-excellent pc except for the faulty motherboard

Yes, I would recommend this product
I am having a 14Z with third gen i7 processor. It is indeed a very beautiful and powerful machine. However, the machine came with a very irritating problem which i hoped could be fixed with updates but it proved me wrong as I believe the motherboard has just failed today.
The pc have been facing booting issues since the day i received the machine. The pc also has very high tendency to hang while browsing the net.The forced restart would lead to the blue screen and trust me the experience is just horrible. The problem became even worst as I upgraded to win 8 pro.I can no longer restart the pc even though certain updates would require restart. Each time restarted, the pc will only be able to log into windows after several times directed to the diagnostic page.
This pc is also surprisingly very sensitive to devices connected through usb port. It will just restart and lead to the blue screen.
However, I need to mention that upgrading the bios managed to improve the situation but never solved it.
Today, 19 march after just 7 months of using, the pc just never booted. No beep noise at all.Just dead.I can hear some spinning noise even after more than 12 hours i tried to switch on the pc.I guess the hard drive is still spinning. Lodged a report with dell technical team and told them the noise(called after 2 hours of earlier report) and they said it will disappear after the battery is dead. but now even after more than 12 hours its still there. Am worried its going to damage my storage as all my research work is in it.
Dell advised that it could be a motherboard failure and their engineer would only come over after receiving the part.
reading reviews written by 14z users, i am confident that dell is competent to solve the problem but i hope the delay in solving it would not be costing my hard drive and all my data in it.
I will still say this is a very good machine as am really impressed with its performance-the speed, music, screen quality...
I bought this laptop newly and directly from DELL. I have been a customer since 2006 and have bought laptops, dsktops, tv, software, camera from DELL but buying Inspiron 14z (AKA 1423) was the mistake of my life. It was money gone down the drain. I bought the laptop on August 2012 and it has totally broken down six (6) times. The first time it broke down I was in Atlanta and meant to write my mid-term exam for one of my online MBA courses. The laptop failed and could not come on again. I could not write the exam and had to withdraw from the class since I could not write mid-term that carried 50% mark. Dell technician came to my house after a week and repaired it. The laptop has repeatedly failed four other times after that, has been taken to Dell and back and as at the time I’m writing this review, the laptop is not working and I’m expecting prepaid box from Dell to send it back for repair the 6th time. Dell refused to replace the laptop because they knew it is a lemon and just want to stick it to customers. It was the worst investments I have ever done in my life. I bought and installed various software that worth $1,600 on the laptop. Everything plus the $621 cost of laptop is bad investment. I will soon put up an extensive blog on this. DO NOT BUY, PLEASE!!!
Pros:nice looking light weight
Cons:fragile not good gets very hot noisy, breaks down frequently, dell will not replace if not good, no reliable support from dell, generally sucks

Hello JSOMN,
I am sorry to hear youare having such a poor experience. This is not indicative of what you should expect from Dell. I checked and see you are already being assisted by a Dell Technician. I know they can help.
If you have any other issues, or need further help with your current issue, reach out to our Dellcares team.
We purchased this ultrabook 3 months ago. We have already wasted 12 hours of our life or more perhaps on the phone with Dell trying to fix this machine. On the second day we had this computer it would not start. We spent hours on the phone with dell trying to fix the problem. Then a couple of weeks ago the sound driver went. Ultimately the entire motherboard had to be replaced. And now we are reinstalling all of our drivers because our Internet connection has failed. Dell tried to blame this on our Internet connection which is interesting considering every other device in our home works perfectly well. After three hours on the phone they realized the error was actually with the ultra book and not with our Internet connection. I cannot believe I've had this computer for such a short period of time and have already wasted so many hours of my life trying to fix it. The only saving grace for this device is that Dell has been willing to fix it without charging us. That being said dell will never be able to give us back the time we have wasted on this Lemon of a computer.
Cons:lemon computer

Hello MelissaS820,
I am terribly sorry to hear about your experience with your Inspiron 14z. Just like with any other electronic devices, computers can have issues from time to time. I am glad we have been able to fix everything that has happened. I do apologize for the inconvenience. Please be assured, if anything else does happen, we are here for you. You might even try our online support through online or social media.
For Tech Support Virtual Agent, Chat, Phone, Email:-
It is really great model with so much good things inside it, but if we look at sound-audio it is not even good with compared to other ultrabooks. I dont know whats the issue is there but volume level in this is too low. It don't give satisfaction to me personally. So i would recommend to not to buy this just because i like to play music and videos on laptop. If anyone can be comfortable with this than its great deal and go for this. This is compact and cute looking fast system. I really like its all specifications excepting volume level of speakers. Especially when the speakers are from skullcandy, i was expecting more. But here i have not got even normal audio performance. Its maximum volume is about only 25-30% of other dell systems having lower price. Really too much disappointed with this.
Pros:compact, lightweight
Cons:lowest audio volume as compared to others
Response from Dell.comBy DonaldDforDell, Customer Reviews, March 18, 2013
Hello Dave11,
Glad to hear your really like the Inspiron 14Z. Sorry to hear you are not pleased with the sound quality. I would recommend trying the sound controls within Windows 8 before giving up on the speaker quality. The shortcut is the Windows Key + I. This will bring up the Settings sidebar (control panel, network, volume, brightness, notifications, and more). Here, adjust the sound volume up, and try your CDs again.
Last week my new Inspiron 14z arrived. I was a little worried by the many previous reviewers who had problems with their devices. In contrast I have had not problems, and the device is fantastic. It boots really fast, without problems, and office 2013 is a nice improvement over 2010. The email setup in outlook is significantly improved. The Inspiron 14z is just the right size, a big enough screen to do real work, but thin and light enough for easy travel. Even with large hands, the keyboard is very comfortable, and the keys have a very good feel. The brushed aluminum finish is very pleasing, and it does not show finger prints like polished plastic. Awesome computer, I'm really pleased that I ignored previous reviews and purchased it.
Pros:nice sized screen, very nice keyboard, thin and light, very fast processor (i5)
Cons:not one

I bought this computer in the fall but recently started using it for school, I have used it equivalent to a month. it worked great until one day when I could not turn it on. I had to send it back to Dell at the end of Feb and have yet to get it back. last I checked it was on "hold" due to back ordered parts.
Computer was great while it worked, but I would have never expected to be without it for 2+ weeks shortly after purchasing.

I purchased my second Dell because the first purchase was excellent. The keyboard has sensitivity issues with cursor and typing, jumps all over the page. The Number Lock feature is absent and I write in two languages almost daily, in emails I have to write in word and copy paste to email, not efficient. Keyboard is position is not comfortable for typing. I have only owned this device for 3 weeks and not much is a positive for me.
Cons:keyboard issues, number lock feature not avaiable
Response from Dell.comBy DonaldDforDell, Customer Reviews, March 19, 2013
Hello Susan7,
Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion of the Inspiron 14z. The issue with the cursor bouncing around can be cured by adjusting the touchpad sensitivity. Go into "mouse" from the control panel and hit the touchpad tab to the right. Hit "settings" there and expand "pointers" then "sensitivity" and adjust from there. There are other settings in there that will help you with your problem too. Look around a little and read some of the settings.
I do not understand why you are typing in Word to paste into email. I would recommend contacting Technical Support. They can look at what you are doing and make a suggestion.
For Tech Support Virtual Agent, Chat, Phone, Email:-
The weight and size of this machine are great. It is easy to carry around campus or work on at home. Those are the only positive things that I have to say about this machine. The hibernation does not work and once it goes into hibernation, it will not turn on again without doing a forced restart. Also, the internet connection is not steady. I have looked for fixes online as well as worked with the Dell IT department. All in all, I have spent about 3-4 hours trying to fix my new laptop with no success. This is the last Dell I will ever purchase.
Response from Dell.comBy DonaldDforDell, Customer Reviews, March 21, 2013
Hello Hannah215,
I would recommend you to flash BIOS if it needs an update. Hibernation issues can occur due to corrupt video card drivers. So, we need to re-install the card drivers as well.
Note: Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:
- Battery should have 10% charge
- Adapter should be connected
- No external devices should be connected.
- All other programs should be closed and documents saved
If the existing BIOS version is the most current one, BIOS update give that prompt during the installation.
2) If BIOS update does not fix the issue, we will have to re-install the video adapter drivers.
Since multiple video adapters are shipped with the computer, I would check the drivers website, intput your service tag and use that driver. If you need further assistance, contat our Dellcares Team:
