Have had my m14x r1 for about 2 years now. It's a good Mobile laptop for gaming and bringing it around. But my 2 stars is for me probably being in the unlucky zone of The reliability.
During these 2 years, my motherboard has been changed 4-5 times due to components error and etc. now my laptop still even have overheating issues, poor quality sub woofer, even though I bought a lot of gaming laptop coolers, and they are having a very little effect on my m14x.
Even there are times when I the Dell staff came to my place to fix my laptop, the parts to be replaced and was given to them were sometimes even broken on the spot. Which is terrible.
I hope that Dell could improve the reliability of the Alienware products as its getting really frustrating to call up Dell when all these occurs.. There were even times when my laptop spoiled before the times I need it urgently.
This is a beast in a small package. I am a gamer that likes to play the latest and the greatest. I am also a graphic designer and video producer. It is tough to find a portable platform that will cover all my bases and this system did not disappoint.
Whether I am plugged into the big screen or huddled with co-workers creating a new project, people are always wowed by the performance and fit and finish of this rig. The value was awesome coming in under 2K, It outperforms most and those it doesn't it beats with looks, durability, warranty and service.
I got this alienware on dec 2011 and i hadnt been able to use it at all. I had problems with the microphone and the camara, i call the technician several times and they change 5 times the motherboard. since the warranty expired i had to pay almost $200 more to renew it. Now that I requested an equipment exchange, they told me that the case is closed. when i turn the computer on makes 5 beeps and stops i have to restart it every time i want to use it.
Cons: - Hinges got damaged within 15 months of purchase. Needed replacement of the entire LCD screen as the hinges are a part of it. - Part took more than a week to be delivered from the date promised. - PATHETIC and most UNPROFESSIONAL customer care service. - Complete harassment
Have had this for several months now and could not be happier with this Laptop. Not sure what the others are talking about the fan, mine is super quiet and runs great. No problems with gaming and the Bluetooth is great.
Pros: Looks great/cool Cons: Fan noise is very loud, motherboard went bad after 3 months (which is a problem others have been having), customer service for getting it replaced was a major hassle, can only play most new games at the lowest to medium settings (for the kind of money you’re paying should be at least high settings). Was hoping to get at least 2 or 3 years out of laptop before being out paced by new games, but didn’t even get 1 year out of it. To sum up don’t get this laptop if you really want to game, get a desktop.
Pros: compatibility for almost all type of games bright and clear LED HD display good internet transfer speeds good battery life well designed touchpad and keyboard elegant lighting scheme
Cons Fan noise Palm rest gets heated up on the right side even during normal usage
Pros:Gaming, documentation, cad software, browsing and downloading
Pros: This laptop is amazing considering its size. It can handle games like Battlefield 3 and Skyrim (although not at maximum graphics.)
Cons: The laptop hardware is unreliable, and feels rather cheap. First, my laptop arrived with a malfunctioning microphone. A dell technician came to my house (after around 2 months of calling and emailing Dell) and replaced it. I was happy again. But now, I have several keys that have nearly stopped working, I have to press them a bit hard so that they actually function. Also, this laptop heats up too much. I'd reach CPU temps of 95C while gaming. I had a cooling pad for my laptop and I even applied my own thermal paste. The temps lowered only to 90C, which is pretty high. Lastly, I get blue screens of death often while gaming. Worst of all, Dell support has not been able to help me, or contacted me back for another possible replacement of parts, or at least any kind of help (despite the fact that I still have warranty.)
It's sad, really. This is the most amazing laptop I've ever owned but I can't enjoy it with the growing number of issues with it. It's unstable. My review might seem like a rant, but I recommend any viewers to take my review into consideration. I've owned this laptop for almost a year.
Pros:Gaming, web surfing, video editing/photoshop, computer science
Awesome gaming beast, I could even turn every graphic feature of the games like Crysis 2, Battlefield 3, Darksiders 2 etc. to their maximum potential. It's a very fast gaming laptop. And lemme tell you one thing if you are a gamer, you should definitely buy this beast. It's compact but not compact in it's features.
Overall this is a great laptop. I did much research when deciding between this and asus. I chose Alienware because of its custimization and portability; also it packs a lot of puch for its size. But like every custom built laptops it tends to have issuse. There are RARE moments when it randomly lags or freezes, which is only a minor anoyance. I was also hoping it could play DX 11,which it can, but not very well. I have been an owner for 7 months.
Games I play: Batman Arkham City Deus ex Human revolution Crysis 1 & 2 Battlefield 3 Starwars The Old Republic
I have many more games than this but these ones have better graphics than most and run almost perfectly to perfectly. Also everyone should know that you can only get medium to high performance on laptops to begin with because of power limits, but it is still great!!!
PS. stay away from macafee!
Pros:Gaming, game develepmont, 3d modeling, regular school work
I'v had this laptop for half a year now, and after the first few months i started having lag spikes in most of my games i played, i also reinstalled windows and formatted my hard drive several times, but this is by far the best computer i'v yet to have, and it just has outstanding performance once you get the hold of this.
After years of owning Mac laptops, I had decided to go back to the PC laptop world. I've heard a lot of great things about Alienware laptops in the past few years, so I decided to give the M14x a try.
I already had a gaming tower, so I was not in the market for a desktop replacement gaming system - just something that could hold its own while on the go. In the 5 months that I've used this machine, however, it has easily replaced my desktop PC. I'm able to play all of the games I've owned on it, with some performing as good or better than how they performed on my tower. The size and weight are just right, considering the power that it's packing, and it does not get too uncomfortable sitting on my lap for extended periods of time.
Pros: -Lots of power for the price -Well built -Does not get too hot or uncomfortable while on the go
Cons: -Touchpad is a little awkward to use -Could use one or two more USB ports
Overall, this is a stellar product that has reaffirmed my faith in the PC laptop industry. Kudos, Alienware!
Pros:Gaming, software development, media center, audio production
Overall this computer is awesome. Its small but has the capabilities of the bigger laptops. The graphics are great and its very fast. The only thing that I have found that I dislike after having this laptop for a year is that there is a scratch partway across the screen. Its from when you close the lid, the separator from the keyboard to the track pad.
This is the second Alienware laptop I have owned. My first was a little over a year ago when I purchased an M15x. That was a nice laptop but, alas, while it was durable, it could not withstand an associate's 2-year-old child dumping a bottle of windex in it while it was running (little booger did it while I was in a meeting - long, sad story.) I replaced it with the M14x (M15x discontinued.)
Wow, what a system! I can live without the extra 1in diagonal screen size. The performance is stellar.
I have to say that in my almost 30 years or so of using PCs that I have never been more impressed with the performance vs cost. I do a lot of things with my system. I do some gaming but I also do quite a lot of Photoshop work with rather large scans of historic documents and photos. No matter what it is I am doing, this system breezes through my work or play with effortless ease.
The reliability is something to speak of as well. Both of my Alienware laptops never, ever failed me at any time. Well built and sexy too.
My favorite new feature on the M14x is the WiDi display capability. So if I were bothered by my slightly smaller M14x (I'm not) I could get by with just using my 32in TV. I do it anyway while I'm gaming and it's a GREAT presentation tool since the audio and video both run through the TV without so much as a patch cord.
PROS: This is one smokin' laptop, plain and simple. Outperforms any thing else I ever had, I'll never go back to the other, inferior brands. The size is great, not too big, not too small, just right. My nephew has an M17x and while I love the screen, you could put legs on that thing and use it as a desk. It's heavy both on the performance side (plus) as well as physical weight (minus).
The backlit keyboard, I think, should be standard on all laptops. The 'ol eyesight is not getting any better with age and the backlit keys are more than just pretty. I also like the ability to change the colors by zone. Using the plugin for my music player, I can even turn it into a light-organ (lets see HP do THAT!)
I also like the Klipsch sound system. What a large robust, sound from such a small package.
CONS: Just a few and they're only cosmetic. I was spoiled by the M15x's lighted Alienware logo on the lid that would reflect the charging status of the battery. Many a time I would begin a large download or was doing an update and crashed on the couch in my den and noticed that I had failed to plug the power pack in by noticing that the alien head was RED. The M14x just simply has a white back light. This one is part cosmetic, part functionality.
And what happened to the nice shiny, slick lacquer paint on the case? The rubberized surface is ok I guess but I liked my nice, shiny laptop. It is a bit easier to keep clean but shows the sweat from my hands more than the slick surface on the M15x.
Like I said, cosmetic. If there is such a thing as the "perfect" system, this is it.
Pros:photoshop, web development, Gaming, productivity, video/sound production
I got the Red M14x R1 model (1.5 GB Nvidia GT 555M graphics card with Intel Sandy Bridge - 2.0 GHz Quad core with turbo boost upto 2.93 Ghz) from the Alienware showroom in Bangalore without any waiting time. And ever since the first boot, it has been the most amazing laptop I've seen. For a gamer like me, its performance is outstanding for a 14" laptop. Anyway, here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Seriously portable for the power it carries within. You can carry it to college and play wherever you want! :D 2. Brilliant display. 3. Incredible sound. It's clear even at the maximum volume which is extremely loud. 4. In my opinion, Alien FX (The lighting on the laptop) just beats every other laptop out there including the MacBook itself when it comes to the looks. 5. Best battery performance for a gaing laptop. Gives me 1 and a half hours continuous of gameplay with a bit more to spare for internet throught the day before I charge it. 6. About Dell's servicing, they get the job done without any problem. 7. Just for the records, if any of you wanted to know if this gaming laptop played BattleField 3 well, it sure does. Perfectly.
Cons:
1. Gets heated up a little too fast while playing. You will need to keep it slightly inclined (which I do) or just rest it on a cooling pad.
Nothing else.
Finally, I can, without doubt, say that M14X is THE laptop for powerful gaming on the go.
I was having a hard time deciding which laptop would be appropiate for me as college was around the corner, and needed a good laptop for my gamer (high demanding) needs.
I made the right choice it performs fantastic, and without a doubt I would recommend it to anyone. There are so many good things, but just to mention a few:
-Chicks go crazy starring at the laptop. (Major point right)
-For gaming it performs steadily 50-60 FPS (Skyrim, BF3, MW3, The Witcher 2, Starcraft 2, League of Legends, NFS:The run, LA Noire, Batman Arkham City, Assasins Creed Revelations, Crysis 2, and list goes on and on.
-Every day use (internet browsing), and college homework and to study.
Its without a doubt the best laptop in the market, and hopefully if you buy it you will experience it by yourself.

I have had this laptop for some time now and love it. Very well built and fast fast fast!
I bought the M14X Alienware as it was meant to be the best laptop on the market...The best thing is it looks good, the smoothest best looking laptop...but ...When it comes to games... games freeze, when it comes to microsoft office .... it freezes and shuts down, when it comes to the internet the bigfoot network software isnt cracked up to what its meant to be. Basically It is not worth the money I paid.I didnt buy the basic I bought near the top of the range .I wont be buying another dell or recomending...but if your happy with a certain standard..The a dell is for you
Pros:internet, office, Gaming, media
