I always shop around for new products but somehow I always end up coming back to Dell. You've always delivered quality machines in my buget and on time. In this case when my "old" XPS720H2C began to show signs of age, I've gone for the Aurora R4.
On paper it looked a very good system and hands on the experience is even better. You know you've made the right choice from the start when even the delivery folks are impressed. The packaging isn't something you're going to spend long looking at but its comforting to see a bit of time and effort being taken by Alienware to ensure the quality in the box shows right down to how its packed.
Opening the box, you are greeted by a long sleek and moderately heavy machine (its a fair deal lighter than the 720H2C).
In terms of setup, it was very simple: plug in, turn on and enjoy. The variety of controls and personalisations available is great. This is a very fast, powerful system that perfectly suits my needs. It doesn't just look great, it feels great.
Only complaint I would have is it wasn't immediately clear just how to open the case (in the end I resorted to google and almost kicked myself how simple it actually is).
Once inside the case, the ability to easily slot in hard drives was very convenient and I soon had all my old data available without cables or downloading from backups.
Beautiful machine, kudos for a job well done from another happy customer.

My Dream Gaming Computer

My entire setup. :)
Yes, I would recommend this product
When I first decided to buy this computer I knew I wouldn't regret it. I've owned dell computers my entire life, never upgrading to a real gaming computer until now, and I'm so glad I did. It did take a good amount of time to assemble and ship, but I can expect that with how nice of quality this desktop has turned out to be. I wasn't able to run most games on my old computer, and now I can run anything I want on highest graphics no problem. A week after I ordered mine, I told a friend about it, and she surprisingly ordered one herself THAT SAME DAY. Very nice computer, I'm in love.
Pros:okay price for the specs., amazingly beautiful case.
Cons:alienware fx/thermal controller are pretty glitchy, very big
I recently bought the Alienware R4 with the option of HD 8950 graphic card upgrade. The delivery and tracking satisfies me, and I couldn't ask for more.
Though, when the package arrives, I was given one monitor with VGA cable and the graphic card port only supports HDMI and Display port. There was no adapter included, and I was left to search for a new HDMI cable/Display port on my own expense. And I thought the package was tested beforehand to make sure it is working properly. How did the team missed this?
One more issue. Dell touts the package as highly customizable up to the customer's needs for future upgrade. Thus, I bought a new AMD HD 7970 to be fitted in the R4 (same chipset with HD 8950, so I thought there would be no issue whatsoever). When I connect and power up the package, the BIOS won't even start up and it beeps 6 times (graphic card issue). Why does this kind of problem happen? The graphic card doesn't have any issue as I've tested it with another system.
FYI, I've contacted technical service, and they doesn't offer the solution that is working. I hope Dell will look into this problem as I love my system and would like to keep it for a long time.
My first Alienware was the M11x R1 and it was flawless. For this second Alienware to be mine, it took THREE times to get it right. I first ordered the first Aurora R4, a year before I ordered this one. That machine was extreme blue screening since day three and the $300 active vent option was not functioning properly. Technical support was no help. I had to return the machine. Luckily return was no hassle with at home pick up. However, packing this 30-50 lbs monster back into its cage was not fun.
A year later I decide to give this machine another try. This Aurora R4 is quite different from the first. Both had the i7 3820 but Dell had decided to downgrade the standard hard drive from 6gbps to 3gbps although the bus being use is a 6 gbps. The gpu was upgraded from NVidia 560 to 660. However, this 660 is a downgrade from the garden variety 660 which come with 2gbps. This Aurora R4's come with only 1.5gbps. I also was not a big fan of the motherboard. Most i7 3820 PC have motherboards that is upgradeable to 64gb. This Aurora R4 is only upgradeable to 32gbps. Nevertheless after calculating the cost per spec with building your own and with the competitor, this Aurora R4 is a bargain, especially with the 1 yr financing and "tech support". So I decided to order it.
This second Aurora R4 arrived a week later. One of the reason I bought this Aurora R4 is because I thought I was made in the USA. After thoroughly tracking the package. It seem that this second Aurora had originated in Mexico. I am not sure of the first Aurora though...
So this second machine got here all sparking new. After 2 days, the nightmare began! The Wired Ethernet port would intermittently connect to the internet although it can connect to my router. The Wifi however worked fine though. The machine would also keep rebooting on its own and programs after another would keep restarting. Tech support was rude and of no help again. They concluded that the motherboard was bad and need to be replace. I paid for a new machine. It would not be a new machine after it got gutted with a mobo transplant! Therefore, I demand a new replacement, this is when the real nightmare begin. I calculated 6 hrs+ on the phone with countless useless departments who are all very rude, just for the purpose of getting a new replacement for this faulty machine. I was finally able to get through to Luis P. from their SOS department, who is the first courteous and helpful person I had encountered with Dell. Luis was able to set me up with a new replacement machine. Thanks Luis!
My third Aurora R4 got here a week later, from Mexico all sparking new. This machine again have the same Wired Ethernet problem, where it connect to the internet intermittently but will connect to my router flawlessly. I will deal with this problem later. The wifi again works perfectly fine. Other than that the machine is amazinig. I was able to run WoW at Ultra with all the fixing in a 40 man raid at 50+ fps.
Pros:great bang for the specs, alienware glitz and glam, great financing
Cons:tech support nightmare, substandard parts for no reason

Good PC

Yes, I would recommend this product
I like your computers and services but i don't like how you guys don't put an effort into it. I got my PC last month but when i try to open the optical drive bay it doesn't go down all the way and thats what disappoint me. I would of gave this Rating the best but i wasn't satisfy.
I love my Alienware Aurora 6-core, I really do. I did have a few problems with it out of the box though.. the lights wouldn't change their color, but technical support was quick to resolve the issue with me over the phone. After that, the card reader failed to operate, but again Technical Support was easy to reach and extremely friendly.
The card reader problem was much more difficult to solve, essentially I ended up opening the computer and figuring out that the power connection to the board was loose, so I took it out and re-seated it. The connection to this day is still quite loose and still comes un-seated if the computer is shuffled or moved around unfortunately, I've had to go back in and press it back into place twice now. I'm familiar with computers and being inside of them so it's not that big of an issue for me, but if this computer had gone to someone else who did not know how to do such a thing, it would be a lot more problematic.
That being said, having to open the computer made me appreciate the way the system was designed, opening the side of the unit is extremely easy and I do like the accessibility.
The system's performance is quite good, though I don't care for the 'throttling' system for the overclocking. There seems to be no real way to gauge if the system is -actually- throttling or not, there's no software to monitor it that I can see. Alienware should consider coding a piece of software that will inform you what CPU speed you are running, just to confirm the end-user is actually getting what they paid for if nothing else. If I'm missing something as to where I can find that information, I'm all ears.
I do wish it had an SSD but I chose not to get one put in due to the fact that the ones offered by Alienware are extraordinarily over-priced. Had they been reasonably priced to match market pricing, that would have been the finishing touch for this system. I'll probably put one in somewhere in the future.
The computer runs all of my games on maximum settings flawlessly, and my photography/graphics editing software suites also run smoothly and problem-free.
I do recommend the product if one of the reasons you are buying is because you don't have all the cash on-hand and you need financing, but if I'm going to be completely honest, I probably could have built a similar-quality system for less myself. But, as with many people today, the financing was just the best financial model for our current situation. The Financing system was also very easy to apply for and use.
I think that's it!

My 2008 Alienware Just After Setup
Yes, I would recommend this product
Although most of my components are outdated today (4/13) this bad boy has been providing reliable service to me since April of 2008. I have used my machine daily for web development and graphic design as well as occasional gaming. (ok, a lot of gaming)
In 2012 I began working from home using my Alienware as my primary work station and it still runs all the adobe creative suite with ease.
I just purchased the Aurora R4 PC this month to replace my 2008 Area 51 but will still keep this machine in the family. After 5 years of service it's now part of our family. Keep up the good work!!!

TERRIFIC COMPUTER!!!!

Yes, I would recommend this product
Hands down the BEST computer I have EVER purchase and I have owned many. SUPER FAST! LOTS of memory! GREAT customer support and loaded with a TON of great features. If You are a Gamer then this is the computer You want. It may seem expensive but I can honestly tell You it is worth EVERY penny. ALL of alienwares products are absolutely FANTASTIC!!!! The outside design is even a true work of art in itself!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!
I've only had my Aurora R4 for a few days, so the jury is still out on its durability. Aside from that, the PC works as expected. The performance is what you'd expect given the specs, namely excellent. The chassis is nice and the AlienFX lights are cool and give some character.
The only glaring issue is that some BIOS settings were wrong and needed to be changed. The power button also feels cheap, but that's a minor quibble.
Aside from that, there was nothing unexpected, or that I didn't already know from reading about.
One of my few minor dislikes. New memory vs theirs.

Ill keep it brief. I have had a boutique computer and a personal built and got tired of the excuses of the boutiue and issues. I got the Alienware R4 ALX because of the comprehensive tech support (i.e. OS,hardware, software aka everything) the AMAZING looking case and of course the performance and reliability. So far i have not been disappointed. The speed in both benchmarks and gaming is great and the appearance of the machine is stunning. I am not an Alienware fanboy just an old geek who got tired of fiddling and messing around for a few extra fps.
Pro's 1- The best looking computer out there...PERIOD. 2-Acceptable performance to price ratio considering the support. 3-Good community and self diagnostic options 4-Out of the 4 calls i have made so far to support 3 have been stellar and they bent over backwards to help me. (The issues were me not knowing how to do something) 5-Fantastic packaging. 6- Even when punishing the computer on DX 11 Heaven benchmarking software the computer stayed super cool.
Cons- 1-The power cable for a $3,000.00 rig is thinner than my dvd player, really guys? 2-Though the memory performs decently, the laptop looking memory was a bit of a dissapointment. Not a letdown just think it could be better. 3-There is not even an attempt made at pretty wiring... im not asking for individual sleeved wires in UV colors, but dang guys wrap some of that stuff up. 4-Wish the gaping hole on the bottom of the case had a cover.. it is the ONLY eyesore on the case and is only visible when the machine is on a desk. But i can see screws.... it could use a grill.
All in all i am very happy with my purchase, i did my research and built 6 computers at various boutiques and found that the price was not that different and sometimes higher and the support nowhere near as comprehensive as Alienwares. Well done Dell you have another convert.
As with all computers, my Alienware M17x R2 was beginning to show its age. I was not able to keep up with the advancement in gaming graphics and wanted to upgrade to a more powerful system. This was my first desktop computer purchase and seeing that I had such a great experience with Alienware and Dell when I purchased my M17x, it was a no-brainer to be a continuing customer. Not only is the Aurora ALX case one of the best looking designs, it is also extremely functional and provides exceptional airflow even under heavy use. It is such a great feeling to be able to blow through any game that you can throw at it. There was only one small hiccup with the Aurora when I received it and that was because of, what I believe to be, misinformation. I had wanted the desktop with wireless capability, but it was no longer available as a configuration option. I was told by the customer service rep that it was because it was now built-in to all systems. needless to say, the system did not come with any wireless NIC installed. even though this was frustrating, a quick call to customer service took care of it. they had sent me the wireless NIC and dispatched a service tech to install it in only two days, all free of charge. I have to say that Dell's customer service is hands down the best I have experienced and they will continue to have me as a customer.
Received my Aurora in December and right out of the box died on start up. Tech helped get it going again. Have had it for almost four months now and it has died for the third time. Very dissapointed that once again I will need to spend an hour + on the phone to try to get it working again then hope in a few weeks it will not die again.
Cons:has died 3 times in less then 4 months
Response from Dell.comBy SaraTforDell, Customer Reviews, April 8, 2013
Hello Quinn626,
This is definitely not the kind of thing we want to see. When an issue does happen, there is sometimes a process of elimination that has to happen to determine the root cause. I hope that technical support has got you all taken care of now. If you do have any additional questions, Alienware Support is available through many channels including the Dell Community Forums (http://dell.to/KZBaoK) or through Twitter- @AlienwareTech (http://bit.ly/VAaJvA).
First I would just like to say that I love my new Alienware. That being said I will go to the bad first:
1. In the customization options when choosing hardware for a custom build, the processors say that they are overclocked. However this is not true, what is overclocked is the first processor to the advertised GHz and the other 3 or 5 are set to a standard clock or .2GHz above a standard clock. A simple check of the bios upon arrival proved this.
2. This may be more of an isolated incident but I have seen similar forum posts about it so I figured it was worth mentioning in this review. Less that a week after receiving my PC I started to encounter glitches with the lighting and thermal controls. The symptoms being: unresponsiveness even on shut down. However a simple warm reboot cleared up the glitches every time for a few hours. After wasting a day calling tech support to get my brand spanking new computer fixed; I find out that its not faulty or corrupt software but a bad piece of hardware, on a computer that I spent over $2400 on. Thankfully tech support is comprised of capable understanding individuals that took care of me; however I am still waiting for the part to get to the technician so that he can call me and make an appointment. ( I should have told tech support I can do it but a warranty is a warranty and after all i did pay for it)
ON TO THE GREAT ASPECTS!
1.Greatest packaging I have ever seen, you probably could have nuked it from orbit and it wouldn't have hurt the PC.
2. Tech support was helpful (which is a first for me when it comes to tech support) I didn't hear once "did you try to reboot or power cycle?" thank goodness.
3. Other than the aforementioned problem the computer runs phenomenally. I ran Bioshock Infinite on the Ultra setting @1080p while I installed another game, listened to music, downloaded more music, and recorded gameplay without even a hiccup.
4.After checking and comparing prices for what I was actually getting in the PC I was pleasantly surprised that Alienware was cheaper than Newegg before I even got my proffered account discount.
I know I am not suppose to mention competitors or tech support or issues I had. However I believe what I said was great, greatly outweighs the bad and I think it gives potential buyers a clear view.
Pros:affordable, great performance, great support, great parts, great packaging
Cons:minor defective part

Got my Aurora this week and I'm impressed with the build and packing quality. When I got things started I noticed the graphics card (GTX660) wasn't recognized and when I plugged USB3 devices into either USB3 port I got a BSOD and it shut down. After installing the Nvidia driver and re-installing the USB3 driver things work great. That's a big disappointment on a machine with that price! It was super-easy to add extra hard drives and BD drives with the ALX chassis, just push them in. Performance is amazing for photo editing and video conversion with the i7 3930K. The few games I played were great as well. Big improvement (3x) over my old Core2 Quad machine...
Pros:build quality, performance
Cons:incomplete setup at factory, no esata port

I am a 50 year old woman who has owned Dell's products for years. It came time to upgrade my 2006 XPS and I recently got into gaming and Alienware was suggested to me and boy am I happy!! I love it. Good value and high quality computer!
I would like to thank Alienware/dell on an amazing product. . Due to the fact that I have built my own computers for years. Having Alienware/dell build me a gaming rig was something that would have never come to mind.
However, I bought my R4 in november of 2012 right around their black friday deals. After doing my own parts shopping. The total of my R4 was more then my parts list. But, dealing with many RMA's for computer parts for years. The service dell provides if something goes wrong far out weights that small sum in comparison.
Building a computer yourself is alot of fun and you learn alot. Having dell do it for you is an excellent alternative. They definately have a customer for life. Thank you Alienware/Dell for blowing me away with your quality.
I never seen like this worst computer. I paid for this computer nearly $4000.00 Dollars. I owned nearly 10 months. They changed my system all parts 2 times. Still its not running after big fight they exchanged my system. Again my motherboard gone and again they changed my mother board still its not running. On site technitian also very poor he doesn't know anything about allienware. Still my computer is not running i opened case i talked to 2nd level support. Still they don't know why my pc is not running. Very poor cusomer service. They don't responce at all. They never call to customer if i open a case. I
