Decent--but only worth it when it's on sale
PostedJuly 5, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
As an owner of an iPad and an 7" Android tablet, I thought I had no need for a dedicated eReader. But I could not discount the advantages of an eReader: smaller, lighter, "paper-like" display, and readable outdoors. I've seen this Libre Pro many times on Dell, but I ignored it each time because: (1) it was too pricey (even half off sale didn't entice me), and (2) it has an LCD screen that they call "ePaper"--which is not the same as real eInk displays.
When Dell had it on sale for $49.99 I could finally justify it to satisfy my curiosity. I did some research prior and found mostly positive reviews. After using it for a while, I agree with everything I've read:
PROS
- small (only 5" screen), light - ePaper is actually very clear and easier to read--it's higher contrast than many eInk displays - buttons! While touch screens are cool, I'm kind of old fashioned and actually enjoy pressing buttons rather than dealing with a fiddly touch screen - compatibility: it can read a variety of files, including ePub, PDF, and RTF
CONS
- unit is rather cheap looking--it *looks* like it should be selling for not much more than $50 - flakiness: the unit hasn't locked up yet while reading, but it froze many times when I connected it to my computer - really slow data transfer: access to the external SD card via the Libre Pro was extremely slow for whatever reason; I resorted to pulling out the card each time and using an external reader - battery life is not nearly as good as an eInk display--it drains within a couple of weeks of leaving it on standby - slow bootup: if you shut the unit down completely, it takes an excruciatingly long time to boot up (like Windows) - slippery: Aluratek should have put some soft touch rubber on this thing--right now it's hard slippery plastic that's not that easy to grip - no touch screen (see "Buttons" above)
CONCLUSION
If you already have a tablet but want a cheap dedicated eReader for the times when you want to do some reading on a really portable device, consider this unit--but only when it's on sale. The regular price of the Libre Pro is more than the Kindle and Kobo models. Right now, the Aluratek is in a tough battle with the Kobo Touch eReader, which has dropped to less than $100.

Qualified recommendation

Yes, I would recommend this product
Pages load fast, the price is good when it is on sale. Hadn't realized that screens are measured on the diagonal - a 5" screen is 3x4". As a senior citizen, my eyes aren't as sharp as they were. I read using the sideways panorama setting, 1/3 page at a time. That's a LOT of clicking to advance pages. An ereader is convenient, this one works fine, it's just the size.
Pros:personal use

Junk. Went through 3 of them
PostedDecember 19, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
Had to return 3 of them before deciding on a refund and buying a Sony eReader. These units are total garbage. They dont even feel like they are worth much. Picture a plastic cheapo picture frame from the dollar store and thats the quality of this product. Spend the extra cash and get something that will last!

Decent E-book Reader
PostedOctober 15, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
Pros: Pleasant reading experience, even though the display is LCD and not E-Ink. Decent battery life, lasts for about one novel-length. Works with Adobe Digital Editions to borrow ePub and PDF books from a library (using Overdrive).
Cons: The steps to purchase/borrow and transfer books is not simple, but once you get the hang of it, is easy to remember and repeat. The Kobo E-book store is way too expensive for the books I want to purchase. I believe it is possible to purchase books from the Sony E-book store (where the prices are more in line with Amazon) for Canada and use them with the reader, though I haven't tried this yet.

Not an E Ink display
PostedSeptember 21, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
The description of this product is misleading. The display is not epaper technology like other e-book devices. The screen is just an ordinary black and white LCD, similar to the screens found in an LCD a clock display. I don't have any issues with the device besides the deceptive use of the word "epaper" in the description.
Stay away from this device if you are looking for an E Ink e-book reader.
