Great eReader

PostedJune 18, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
This reader has all the functions that you will need, ranging from excellent WiFi to responsive touchscreen. But in my opinion, what makes it the best eReader on the market is the exhaustive list of supported book formats. PDF and ePub are not supported on many of its competitors.
Pros:reading books, Travel

Excellent e-reader

Sony developers cut almost all the excess, both literally and figuratively. The result is a thin, lightweight, comfortable and not stuffed with extra functionality for e-book fairly modest price.

Excellent qulality

Brand name pays off. It is a well built unit with excellent battery life. Weight is very important if you have to hold it for hours and this unit from Sony feels like paper weight. Some other improvements are re-design the stylus such that it can attach to the unit, otherwise you will lose it i no time. Authorizing the unit can be a daunting task for most people and can be frustrating if you want to download eBooks from the Public Library. This unit is NOT a Tablet and only has very basic web functions. Congrats to excellent SONY tech support and they are very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I give them an A.

Excellent E-Reader

Yes, I would recommend this product
I purchased this reader about 6 weeks ago to replace my Sony PRS-600. I have absolutely no regrets. the reader is very light weight and easy to hold for long periods of time. There are many settings which may take some time to explore. They include settings such as page turn preferece, wireless network settings, standby screen options, etc. In addition when reading a book you have access to about 7 different fonts, 8 different sizes of print, so the earlier review about print size being small in my opinion is not an issue. In addition you are able to adjust the contrast and brightness of the reader page. I found the print quality superb. My previous Sony reader had a fair amount of glare when reading in certain conditions. This one doesn't. The touch feature works perfectly for me.
This is the first 6" reader Sony has produced with built in wifi. I've used it to purchase and download books from Kobo. No problems at all. This was an issue for me. While I knew that downloading books from the Sony Reader store was a given, I wasn't certain if I would be able to download books purchased from other online retailers such as Kobo Books. I am very pleased with the wireless feature.
I have no hesitation in recommending this Reader. It is simple to operate, and does not get in the way of the reading experience.

VERY horrible product

PostedNovember 17, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
I decided to purchase this e-book reader for my school work, such as: to borrow books from the library and easily download the necessary book(s) to complete projects and term papers. I was hoping for a gadget that IS light and compact enough to carry and utilise. I was excited when the product arrived; NEVERTHELESS, when trying to install adobe digital edition into the system=NIGHTMARE!
-opening pdf files downloaded from the e-library books seemed to be a repeatable set of NIGHTMARES!
-After 2 days of doodling around with it and NOT getting anywhere; I decided to return the product for a full refund!
-It flickers a LOT!
The GOOD stuff:
-It IS a VERY responsive touch screen.
-It IS quick.
-Liked the Android-based OS....
-The look is sleek and very decent...
-The package came with a cover, 4 sd AND mini sd cards, a VERY long USB cord-- liked it for convenience.
Overall, would I recommend this product to a friend? NOT quite...

Bright screen and good PDF rendering

PostedNovember 2, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
Pros:
- ePub file format support (get a clue Amazon!)
- the automatic cropping feature works quite well for viewing PDF files "as is". Text is small, crisp & legible but images may lack detail
- WiFi support
- Android OS running under the covers
- e-Ink Pearl screen (which is on par with its competitors)
- equipped with a basic web browser (I'll probably never use this feature)
- can play MP3/AAC files (this isn't a big deal but it should be noted because some of its competitors lack this feature)
- touch interface is responsive
- can make notes/create annotations
- the ability to sign out books from your local public library (I doubt I'd ever use this feature but it's nice to have)
- I have yet to try it but apparently you can now load books by just copying files directly onto the device/microSDHC card without having to go through the Sony Reader software or Calibre.
Cons:
- absolutely hate the glossy plastic trim (which attracts fingerprints & oils)
- wished the cover had hidden magnets to keep it closed (like that in the original PRS-500 cover)
- with the stylus clipped, the cover still closes but a tad crookedly. I sure hope the stylus never falls out and cause me to lose it.
- the Sony Reader companion software has improved over the years but I prefer to use Calibre, the free cross-platform open source alternative.
If you already own a Sony Reader from the last couple years that has an e-Ink Pearl display, then I don't think there's enough new features in this model to justify the upgrade. But for someone like me who is upgrading from the original Sony Reader PRS-500, it's definitely worth it.
Remember that e-Ink readers are not for everyone and they serve a niche market. It's a lightweight compact device that can be taken with you and used (even in bright sunlight) for extended periods of time between battery charges. For all other uses (e.g. reading textbooks that have lots of diagrams/figures/tables/pictures/etc. or require colour), you're better off with a tablet device.
