Title:

Poor build quality and hangs all the time

PostedAugust 22, 2012
No, I do not recommend this product.
I bought the ix2-200 from Dell about 2 years ago... used it as a backup NAS. It constantly hangs (inaccessible) and I had to pull the power to reset. The power pull caused data loss and eventually I had to turn off write caching to stop losing data whenever I had to pull the plug due to the NAS freezing.
Eventually, I had to RMA the device, where I had to pull the hard disks out for backup and erase before sending it back. Upon pulling the drives out, I've noticed the plastic drive brackets actually melted around the screws (the contact point between the drive and the bracket). As NAS generally stays on, the device is incapable of dissipating all the heat. I wouldn't buy another Iomega NAS again.

Title:

Slow performance NAS device

PostedMay 11, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
The setup of the system is straight forward and easy. You can invite your friend to join your Personal Cloud for accessing the default shares but they do need to install a software on their computer. The built-in SMTP server (after configuration) will automatically send an email to invite your friend with the access code and your Personal Cloud Name together with a web link pointing to Iomegacloud website to download the required software for your MAC, Linux or Windows system.
To create extra share(s) with the permissions setup are also not that difficult but made sure that you remember the share name is case-sensitive and don't use special character such as space character in order to successully access the share(s). I have to spend sometimes to figure out that.
Or you can enable the FTP server to allow your friend upload and download the files. However, the built-in ftp server does not support unicode characters such as Chinese characters. You will see a lot of strange characters if it is not English characters from your ftp client.
The Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 is a low-cost solution for backing up data and Personal Cloud access for multiple computers at home and outside your house (through the Internet access) with data redundancy. Yuo will get a peace of mind of your data and the unit is backup up by 3-years warranty but you have to register on-line. However, the transfer of data from a share to another share is extrememly slow. It is actually like you move the data from one partition (volume) to the other partition (volume), i.e copy and delete. So make sure you have a good planning before you perform the move. Otherwise, you will waste a lot of time.
The performance of the network transfer speed is also not good and the direct USB file transfer is slow too (and I only recommend to use that if you don't mind to allow everyone to access it as it automatically stores in a common share volume. During the writing data, you can hear a lot of noise coming out from the hard drives because of the hard drive access. Therefore, it is better not to place the box in your bedroom.
Therfore, I can only give 3 stars overall.
Pros:backup solution

Title:

Great Network Storage Drive

PostedJanuary 22, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
I purchased an IX2 as my second storage device and I am very happy with my decision. It is attached to a router in the basement. We use it to store all our family files including home videos, images and documents and we access the files from any PC anywhere in the house. Further, I connected my Samsung Bluray player to the same router and I can playback our videos or photos on the TV without having to spend a lot of time to convert the files, etc. The Bluray pulls the files from the network drive and displays the video on TV screen without any trouble!
Pros:home entertainment, personal storage
