A little difficult at first

Yes, I would recommend this product
I had some issues getting it to recognize the files on my computer and getting it to get netflix working. But it is a linux operating system and trying to get it to communicate with Windows 7 is a bit of a chore. I ended up making a media server out of my dual band router and it plays my media flawlessly. Streams netflix perfectly it is a really great product. I would not recommend it for someone who is not computer savy that wants to stream media. If you are just looking to use it for netflix and hulu and all that jazz then this is hands down perfect.

Excellent local media streamer
PostedApril 1, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
This Box provides more media content than one can watch in a day. I primarily use this box to stream locally stored media (1:1 BD mkvs) to the box, I've found that the internet media sources are excellent as well. Currently some bugs with DTS-MA dropouts, ~2-4 1/2 sec dropouts per movie. Upgrades to the browser will add to the usefulness of the Boxee. Better use of the main menu page would be great as well. NFO support expected with the next fw update. Overall, great purchase!

This truly can give you everything you need to view any media that you own and also to access streaming from the internet. I was a little dissapointed in the apps that are available right now, hopefully there will be more useful ones in the future.
If you have a lot of media (moviea in any format, photos, music), then I recommend purchasing a Boxee.

Digital Media Freedom in a box

Yes, I would recommend this product
Whether this is exactly the right product for your needs depends on answering one question: Do you want to access wide varieties of online content, or do you want to manage and use your own local media library? If your answer is one or the other, there may be other products you should consider. If your answer is "Both!", the Boxee Box is the right tool for the job.
The underlying Boxee software has been around for a few years, going through progressive evolution and improvement along the way. Today it offers possibly the best indexing and cataloging of local media. It does not reorganize your media files or require only one or two specific formats - it recognizes practically anything under the sun and does a superb job of automatically identifying episodes of TV shows and movies.
On the online front, no other device rivals its ability to access major commercial content and independently-published content with equal ease. The big black eye at the moment is the inability to access Netflix (which does work on the DIY Boxee), but that fix is due out momentarily.
Possibly the greatest advantage of the Boxee Box is its extensibility and openness. You don't have to rely on Boxee to provide channels - third-party repositories can be added and their content accessed just as easily as YouTube, Vudu, or major network TV. The Boxee Box is great already, and it's only getting better.
Did I mention it's REALLY small, like palm-of-your-hand small, and REALLY quiet? It stays out of the way and lets you enjoy your TV experience.

Good choice for our family

We recently ditched our cable to cut back on expenses. Luckily we can get our local stations with internal "rabbit ears". We ordered our Boxee for Christmas. It was extremely easy to hook up to our home network. It even automatically located our server drive and was able to access the contents stored there. The children love being able to watch the shows that they used to watch on cable (although they are not current). I enjoy the movies and shows that you can watch for free. You can now use boxee to connect with Netflix. I'm still waiting for them to include Hulu. When looking at these types of units, do your research and see if it meets your specific needs. It works very well for us. By the way, we didn't have a "freeze" problem watching videos (our network has 3 video game systems, 1 desktop, 2 laptops, a nook, and the boxee), and with 4 kids, it keeps the network busy.

Boxee is cool

I got one of these for my wife so she can watch some subscription content she wanted without having to monkey with a computer. After we got past a couple foibles and learned how to run itproperly, we are happy enough with it that I am ordering another one for my man cave TV. I have had several media players, but this is the first one that plays all the video formats we need so I am happy. Also, lots of cool apps, plus additipnal repositories of other apps available. Most bang for the buck. I have one of the new Apple TVs, which is great, but Boxee supports many more formats.

Network Nightmare !
PostedJanuary 1, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
I was really excited to get this for X-mas as it would allow me to access free media content over my broadband connection. After turning it on, it took me a number of trys to get the thing to finally take my network password. It worked great when plugging in a pendrive to watch movies (it has a ton of codecs) but It was such a hassle to get it to access files on my other computers. After taking it to a friends house and showing it, when I came back home, it would not connect to my network, so I sent it back. It is not as simple as the ad makes it seem. You need a pretty fast internet connection (over 4Mb) to get a decent stream off the internet. This thing is not worth $200.00, $75.00 sounds fair.

It needs work

No, I do not recommend this product.
I bought this unit to go on line to watch movies and listen to music well the musci part is good but watching movies is not good. The unit keeps freezing up. Then when I called D-link they walked me through the set up and said it was a bad unit. So it looks like they need to do some work on it to get the bugs out.

Poor choice by me
PostedDecember 30, 2010
No, I do not recommend this product.
I was very disappointed with this product. The main reason I bought this was to stream with Netflix or Hulu. Much to my dismay it doesn't work with either one as those applications aren't available yet. Another problem was when I want to watch some TV shows I have a problem as it won't download the show if it's carried through Fancast. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone at this time. They have some major repairs ahead.

easy to use and navigate

Yes, I would recommend this product
Once I hooked this up and pointed it to the files I wanted it to use, it was easy. It downloaded thumbnail images of all my movies, TV shows and music and cataloged it all for me. Very easy to navigate. I am able to watch any of my recorded media and stream netflix from the same place. Also where some of my recorded videos did not play befor, they do with Boxee....meaning they had the codec i needed in their system.
