nice little box when it works
PostedApril 26, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
Arrived promptly from Dell as usual. Easy to setup (hdmi to tv, optical to amplifier, ethernet to switch) - up and running in less than 15 minutes, streaming HD video and music with very good quality pictures and sound from my NAS disk.
However, it can see all the PCs in the network but cannot see the contents of them (complaining "There is no media in the current folder"). It appears to be a very common problem. The workaround from the forum is to turn off password protected sharing and enable public folder sharing. It worked for a day but the next day, it couldn't see the PCs at all. Very annoying that it can't get the BASIC network sharing working.

Review Your WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Play

A very good device and sturdy. Nice to connect to home network and 2 USB connections. I would have given it 5 stars if it played rmvb as well. This is the only pitfall in my opinion.

Very good product.
Very simple, user friendly, powerfull.
Too bad I had to redo some ID3-Tag for my MP3 to have the picture for some of my albums.
Too bad that we can not customize menu icons and background (now...maybe in an other firmware...who knows).
Overall a very very good product.

Great little device

Yes, I would recommend this product
The WD Tv live is a great little media player. It does what it says - decoding and playing all kinds of formats of video and audio with good to excellent quality.
It easily integrates with a home network and finds the WD MyBook World Edition NAS uPnP server perfectly.
You can also modify its internal software to give it extra capabilities if you are adventurous enough. Only downside is that it doesn't do Netflix - for that you need to buy the WD Tv Live Plus.

Great for video

I bought this essentially to play videos. The video quality is excellent - however, the display-quality of photos was disappointing; the photo channel on my Wii console is far superior; also, the typing interface for you-tube is not very user friendly, but the video quality is fine. This product seems very durable: small form factor + solid feel, and sits very nicely with my dvd/tv setup. The remote and reception is nice too. I haven't really explored all the features yet, but this product is highly recommended for its quality of videos and solid feel.

Excellent Product

I had the old version of the media player and was not able to hear digitally encoded audio through the regular RCA cables - you needed to connect to a home theater system with the optical audio out. This new player allows you to play digital audio through the RCA connection, if you don't have a home theater system close to the TV you are connected to. Because the media player is so small, it's easy to move from room to room/TV to TV. I can watch all my movies that i have on my USB drives in any room.

Plays every format (.img, avi, DTS audio ect)that I can throw at it. Setting up UBS wireless network was easier than expected. The people who designed this unit really did their homework. I finally have a product that was truly plug and play. It was up and running in a matter of seconds. Video in 1080p is awesome. Had to buy a toslink splitter/switch at a different site since my Home theater system has only one optical input. The only minor issue, is that the Toslink output (optical out) is "on" all of the time, therefore it interferes with optical signal from my Cable PVR. If you are only using HDMI then it wont be an issue.

Fantastic!

This little video player will play almost any video file type you throw at it. MKV's in 1080P look incredible on my 47" LCD TV
The only issues I've had is with have the WD TV Live HD see the shares on my Windows 7 PC. I haven't spend enough time to try figure it out. I'm not sure I would use that feature anyways as I have a 1.5TB drive connected to the WD TV Live HD and just dump video files onto the hard-drive from my main PC.
As per the other review, the only reason the white light stays on is because the box is on. If you turn it off with the power button on the remote all of the lights on the box will turn off.
I've had the WD TV Live HD for almost 6 months and I have left it on continuously and have never had the device lock up on me like the previous review. The device does get pretty warm, so you can't stack this device with a hard-drive, or anything otherwise it will over heat.
I highly recommend this product!

Good, not great
PostedApril 15, 2010

I had read very positive reviews of this product prior to purchasing so I felt I had a good idea of what to expect.
It arrived promptly (as always from Dell) and setup was a breeze. I plugged it into my small tv in the bedroom, plugged it into the network and it was up and running. It auto DHCP'd on my network, found an update, updated, rebooted, found a second update, updated, rebooted, and found my DLNA share.
I was now able to watch video content from my main server.
It worked great for about 2 weeks, with the only annoyance being that there was no auto shut off and the white power led is quite bright.
At this point it just stopped working. Wouldn't play any video or music content advising me that the file was unsupported. I hard booted it and still nothing.
I searched online and found a few posting that this was apparently a very common issue. The general consensus is that it is either a heat issue that can be solved by unplugging it for about 15 minutes and resetting it to the default settings (which did work but was annoying) or that it was an issue with what basically amounts to a memory leak (which is why removing power and resetting to defaults fixes it) that could also be worked around by installing non official firmware and remoting into the box and resetting a couple of services (that I honestly couldn't be bothered testing)
I have recently installed a new firmware and while I haven't seen this same issue yet ( in about a week) I now seem to have an issue with having my DLNA server content not being up to date (Deleted a folder and it still shows, new files are not appearing).
In the end, when it works, it works great. When it doesn't work, it becomes very annoying. I'm hoping that WD will release yet another new firmware that will resolve these issues.
