Title:

Could Not Connect to Internet - Had to Return

PostedOctober 24, 2009
No, I do not recommend this product.
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router has been my trusted and reliable router for 8 years. But then I every time I would transfer a TiVo recording to my computer and sometimes after watching Netflix movie, the router would lose Internet connection, and I had to power cycle the cable modem and the router. Specs on D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router looked great, I figured I could use 5 GHz network for streaming movies and 2.4 GHz for regular Internet & network use.
But I could not get D-Link DIR-825 to connect to the Internet through Toshiba cable modem (Charter Cable). Returning stuff is such a hassle that I repeatedly called D-link support, worked with three tech support reps, and they could not get it to work. Finally the tech support lady told me to return it. Regular network, on each band worked, but the router could not connect to the Internet.
Smallnetbuilder web site has great reviews of networking equipment and they got best performance from Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700 Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router (Black) which is not available for shipping until next month. D-Link DIR 825 is rated even lower than Linksys by Cisco WRT400N Dual-Band Wireless-N Router. Of course, dual band 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz is useful only with 2 radios (simultaneous). Interference from other devices like microwave, cordless phones and intercoms is more on 2.4 GHz channel and this band has only 3 non overlapping channels - 1,6, & 11; 5 GHz signal is reduced more when passing through walls etc. but it has more non overlapping channels, so less interference from other networks. G and single band N radios work only on 2.4 GHz.
Pros:stream movies, home networking, internet

Good Modem lil over priced

Yes, I would recommend this product
When I get a PS3 I will let you know how the 2.4 and 5.0 variey on this.
Pros:ethernet net connection is super fast and reliable. Wireless G works like most routers have been about 100' with g and still works with 3-4bars. Has wep2 :) security. Interface is relativly simple. I love the usb network jack I am able to share a external HDD or printer over it. The included software makes sharing files over the network from XP to vista a snap. The 2.4 and 5ghz really hasn't helped me much but I don't have a media center yet.
Cons:N doesn't seem as good always is 1 bar lower than G and seems just as fast. The firmware auto update doesn't do its job. I had to DL the update and install from my desktop. With the update it allows you to share the usb with a HDD.
