This router provides more features than standard home routers, but less than true business routers. It's definitely middle-of-the-road feature-wise.
However, the solid security features come at a pretty big security hit. I just upgraded to the latest firmware v2.0.2.1 from a v1 rev, thinking that maybe some improvements would have been made. No such luck.
My business class fiber optic Internet connection is supposed to be 20mbps both directions. Here are my average test results:
On a Cisco RV042 router: 19.7Mbps down, 44.1Mbps up---
On the WRVS4400n v2: With Firewall and IPS disabled: 21.2Mbps down, 2.4 Mbps up.--
Firewall enabled and IPS disabled: 20.5Mbps down, 2.4 Mbps up.--
Firewall and IPS enabled: 7.7Mbps down, .92Mbps up--
So, if you want a lot of options with security and speed is not important, this router is OK. If you want to take advantage of that high speed Internet connection with maximum security, you should probably spend more money and get a higher tier router. All tests were cabled, no wifi.
These "business class" routers are anything but. I've had two fail over the last year in seperate environments. This is just a Linksys in a nice suit. While you may be tempted by the price, do yourself a favor and get a real firewall like a Sonicwall or a Watchguard.
This router meets all of our security requirements. We can meet our programing requirements for web access; websites are blocked as needed, and our network is secure, all while we are able to conduct our daily business.
Worked perfectly right out of the box, easy to configure(especially if you've used other linksys/cisco products). Can be set to basic wireless security or locked down as tightly as you want. Highly recommended!
This is a great router for the price. I bought it primarily for the wireless VLAN support. It works well for my application. I can give my office full access to the network and my guests access just to the Internet. This router runs as the central hub for my entire wired network. I have has heavy loads on it with network intensive applications and it preformed flawlessly with no latency.
I see lots of reviews where people have had issues with the VPN, but I have not use that feature yet so I cannot comment on it.
You do want to make sure that you get the V2 version of the hardware and not the V1 or V1.1.
Hope Cisco is embarrassed that their name was slapped on this garbage.
Pros:Easy to install... and 3 cool looking antennas.
Cons:Cannot maintain a connection. Dell Vostro 2500 cannot even see it. Constantly rebooting. The ONE firmware upgrade did nothing but took almost an hour to install. Reboot time is worse than a server. Pricey. Cheap, plastic case. Definitely NOT business class.

We are sorry to hear about your experience with the WRVS4400N. We would like to take this opportunity to address the issue/s you are experiencing. In regards to changing the wireless mode, wireless channel or channel bandwidth settings on the router, it may improve poor wireless performance. It can also be caused by software or the PC drivers. On the older versions of the router software, the wireless data did not go through the hardware NAT engine, which limited the performance from the WLAN to the Internet.
This has been corrected with the latest WRVS4400N router firmware. This can be downloaded with instructions with the following link: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/rou...
Constant rebooting is not something we have seen on this product. It is recommended that you contact the Cisco Small Business Tech Support Center, at: U.S. (866) 606– 1866.
This Cisco Small Business product comes with 3-year limited hardware warranty with return to factory replacement and a 90-day limited software warranty. In addition, Cisco offers software application updates for bug fixes and telephone technical support at no charge for the first 12 months following the date of purchase. To download software updates, go to http://www.cisco.com/go/smallbiz.
FTP through the device does not work. Transfers greater than a few KB fail. Linksys has acknowledged the issue, but no fix. Wireless devices occasionally fail to get DHCP address. Power cycle fixes the problem. Has been known to form poor HTTP packets that get rejected by some firewalls/server. Power cycling fixes the problem. No firmware updates since 2007.
Pros:Wireless 802.11 draft-n compatibility.
Cons:Buggy firmware.
Requires frequent power cycles to operate properly.

We are sorry to hear about your technical issues with FTP and DHCP, and appreciate your review. We have seen an issue related to FTP and DHCP in the previous version of firmware. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to the latest version of the firmware (1.1.13) which should resolve your issues.
It's recommended that the router gets reset to factory defaults after your firmware upgrade is completed, this can be done by holding down the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds and then release.
If you should need additional help please call the Cisco Small Business Tech Support Center: U.S. (866) 606– 1866

Pros:I bought two Linksys WRVS4400N routers to manage a business from my office with a site to site VPN connection. I have previously managed a Cisco PIX 515E VPN appliance in a corporate enviornement for 5 years. To begin the install I enabled remote management on the customers existing router and copied the config to the new WRVS. Then I placed it on site. The customer was literally off the internet for less the two minutes while I swapped the cables into the new router. I had to flash the BIOS and upgrade the IPS signature files before placing it, this is certainly a inconvience, but that is how networking equipment goes. After returning to my office, I wanted to set up the site to site so I connected remotely to the router on the client side and http'ed to my local router. The documentation for VPN's is ok but could be better. Seems to be written by someone who has not actually set up a site to site, just read about it. I spent a few hours trying to bring up the tunnel with no luck, the name of the tunnel was two words with a space, I removed the space and the tunnel came right up! I searched Cisco documentation but if they are aware of the issue they don't report it in any way. The wireless connetion is ok, I find I must disconnect and reconnect the wireless connection is windows if the box has been idle for several hours. For the most part, this is a very good vpn router for a few hundred bucks. I will buy more as I add clients for remote support.
Cons:The documentation could be better. I could not get the site to site VPN tunnel up so I looked to the advanced tab and they seem to have forgottened to document this area as an afterthough. They should tell you that the advanced area can be left as default only. The problem was a space in the tunnle name, appears to be another undocument Cisco secret.
My main beef with the router is the QoS settings.. You have to enter in how much bandwidth you have in order for it to work.. However it does not differentiate between upload and download..
So my 16 Down 768 Up with QoS turned on will be
768 UP and 768 Down..
I think this is a real lack of thought on this product since 99% of people that are going to use it have a higher download then upload..
Hopefully it will be fixed with the next firmware release.
Firmware Version: V1.00.12
But since this is a pricier more bussiness product, I doubt there will be any support or good firmware updates..
I called for general questions about the product to there support team. I don't think it matters what you call for it will always be a 45-50 minute call for them to tell you they can't help you.. But actually since there screen does not say that they will only repeat whatever they read over and over again..
I like there products but I would never recommend contacting there support for anything.. If it doesn't work take it back. There support will not be able to help anyone.
Pros:Good Gigabit, Good MIMO.
Cons:Price, QoS is horrible Customer phone support horrible, Mixed wireless bad
Check the support forums on the manufacturer website. There is a lot of info there about this problem.
Pros:Fast wireless.
Cons:As of firmware version 1.0.12 this unit will not allow SLL port 443 to be forwarded to a server. Very serious limitation for Small Business Server users desiring to use SSL for OWA or SharePoint.
