Many problems
PostedApril 28, 2013
No, I do not recommend this product.
This monitor sports some cool features, but has a few flaws that make it sub-par.
Moving images on the screen have this subtle "criss-cross" pattern next to them. It becomes very noticeable if it's next to another monitor without that problem.
The monitor suffers from burn in if images are on screen for an extended period of time. Eventually the burn in goes away, but it doesn't change the fact that it's frustrating when it happens.
I went through two of these monitors before I asked for a refund. Both monitors suffered from various degrees of backlight bleeding. On a black screen, the first monitor was just pure yellow, and on the second there was a potent yellow glow at the bottom left.
There was also a strong white glow on the right side of the screen when looking at it from head on. The attached image is of the two screens in a dark room, black screen, from head on.
Dell support was very good, but I was not going to risk swapping monitors over-and-over with their warranty until my return period ran out, so I returned the monitors.
Pros:great colours, good screen size, like the usb ports
Cons:backlight bleeding, burn in, poor picture quality for moving images, white glow on right side of screen

Hi WindyB,
We appreciate you taking your time and describing your experience with the U2713HM monitor. It is obvious that it did not meet your performance standards but I am glad that Dell Support took care of your concerns in a timely and satisfactory manner. Feel free to reach out to our SOS Support team if you have any needs or concerns in the future!
This is my first Dell monitor, and overall I am happy with the display, color, build quality, controls, and the ability to adjust the position easily. The USB 3.0 hub is very useful as well.
Mine has the two major flaws that many others have complained of -- the backlight bleed and the cross-hatching effect. The backlight bleed is mostly in the lower left corner and is very noticeable when the room is fairly dark and the screen is showing black or dark colors near the bottom. I mainly use the monitor for work, where the bleed is not an issue, but when watching movies, etc., the yellow glow in the corner is rather distracting. I am considering asking Dell for a replacement, but it seems like so many monitors have this issue that I'm not sure if it's worthwhile.
The cross-hatching is, for me, quite significant, because I am a designer and so I am always looking carefully at fine details. The faint diagonal lines in the background (on the lower part of the screen, when viewed from about arm's length) look like they are part of the background of whatever I'm looking at. My understanding is that this is not Dell's doing, but is an aspect of this particular panel, but that doesn't excuse the issue. The U2413 and U2713H apparently do not have this problem, but I don't feel that I should have to pay even more just to have a clean-looking background -- after all, I've never seen this on any other monitor.

Hi jlhopes,
It sounds like your overall experience with the U2713HM monitor has been a good one. Backlight bleed has been an LCD issue for many years and has been getting better and better with each jump in monitor technology. The cross-hatching issue you mention is new to me and I think that speaking to a monitor warranty expert might suit you best here. Check out ChrisM's post on Dell's Community Forums about monitors and feel free to message him directly with any questions.

U2713HM Nice Monitor but ....
PostedApril 5, 2013
Yes, I would recommend this product
I just received my U2713HM which was purchased for use on a MacMini and a full blown Windows 7 gaming system. The fact it had multiple inputs was the selling feature for its 2556X1440 resolution.
The issue is that the maximum resolution is only available to me if I use a Display Port cable. This is true for both computers, which at first I thought was an Apple issue, but my Windows machine has an AMD 7950 video card with the latest drivers installed and the same issue exists. Even if I use the DVI cable that came with the monitor all I can get is 1920X1024.
Dell should make this clear in its advertising, now rather than using the monitor console to switch inputs to switch devices I have to physically switch cables. Maybe two display ports would be more useful than an old VGA port?
Otherwise the monitor works well and looks great, it just falls short of my expectations due to the input issue.
Pros:light great colour
Cons:max res only seems available on display port

Review 4 for Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with LED
I was really eager to jump to these kind of monitor , I must say image quality is really good compared to my old HP ZR24W. I must admit the 16:9 aspect ratio does not matter anymore at this resolution (2560x1440) which is nice . The only bad thing and it's bad one his the back bleed on the lower left portion on the monitor , it will turn black images to a brownish black which is WRONG . I have called Dell support service for a replacement , support was very kind and they are sending me another monitor to my house . I Hope the second one will be perfect . it's sad to see those quality issues even after all the complaints of other customers , without it it would be an amazing safe purchase and recommendation
Pros:nice osd menu, nice power consumption, nice customer support
Cons:back bleed on lower left

Great connectivity with Lenovo T410 DP onboard DisplayPort and gives sound through the audio output from the monitor, the colors are accurate, USB3.0 is imcompatible for my laptop, but it's fair enough for the price. I have read a lot of complain about pixel issue from Amazon reviews, I have not seen anything wrong on my own.

Just recieved my new computer monitor yesterday. Wow!!! Amazing monitor. Its like night and day compared to my older one. So far no complaints and couldnt be any happier with it. Just one question I have is I cant seem to find a port for a HDMI cable on my computer to hook into the monitor. Not sure of the exact model of the computer, but only 2 years old so I assume there is a port for the HDMI cable. Any information about this would help and be appreciated. I would assume that the port I see on the monitor is HDMI capable as well? (just to be 100%).

The picture is excellent right from the box no dead pixels, no bleeding in left bottom corner as many buyers complain. The monitor is grate addition to my new XPS8500 desktop. Thanks DELL.

Review 9 for Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with LED
I am a professional Photographer spending a lot of time each day on my new U2713HM monitor. I have had it for about a 2 month now and have found nothing wrong, it installed and runs great. The first thing I did was calibrate it as it seemed too bright out of the box. It was. The OSD works great and is easy to use. I have seen nothing that I can complain about. No bad pixels, the screen coating is great and is much better than my last monitor a LaCie321. I think the LaCie must have had little or no coating on it's screen as I was having trouble using it from the glare. I like all the features on this new monitor, USB3 ports (4), the space I have on it compared to a 21 inch. I have seen none of the reported problems by others with light bleed, banding, installation, etc. I also want all to know that I did read what others were saying (and really appreciated their comments - but I spent time working through their comments). In my research prior to buying I could find nothing better for the money. Also, to have it be a sRGB that can be calibrated using Custom Color to better match the printer gamut characteristics, more towards Adobe RGB to Pro-photo RGB allows the soft proofing to be more accurate when using the relative/perceptual setting in Photoshop prior to printing and wasting a lot of expensive paper on my Canon IPF5100 printer. All I can say is I really like this monitor, the first I have gotten from Dell (through Newegg). Yes, I believe this monitor is excellent in all ways. I consider this monitor to be a wonderful professional tool for any photographer, graphic designer. I like the tube coating, too. I am in very up close and personal retouching and finishing detailed work and this monitor has made me a very happy camper.
Pros:exellent in all ways.

Better than my Ultrasharp from 2004
PostedFebruary 25, 2013
No, I do not recommend this product.
I have mixed feelings about U2713HM. I had to return 2 of these monitors for backlight bleeding. The first had nonfunctional USB ports, too. The 2nd and 3rd monitors' USB ports were fine. The backlight bleeding was in the lower left part of the screens of all 3 monitors--all of which were direct from Dell. The bleeding for the 1st and 3rd monitors was bad, but somewhat less noticeable in the 2nd, which so happened to be a refurbished monitor. I kept this one because I hope I have better things to do than spend a month sending and receiving monitors until I get one in which the display is uniform for the black and darker grays. Incidentally, I didn't have this issue with my 20" Ultrasharp from 2004 (??), which has finally bit the dust. The first U2713HM also had some discoloration (green) and other lack of uniformity in the gray screen of the self-test. This backlight bleeding in dark screens of movies, etc., can be quite distracting. On the plus side, the color is very good, and the extra real estate is good for working with documents side by side, which I do a lot of. Also, I had a very positive experience with customer service. The reps in the online chats were very patient and helpful. One called me back to see how the first replacement monitor was performing. Back in 2004, I had such bad experiences with customer service that I swore I would never buy another Dell. I did buy a different desktop, but I opted for a Dell monitor after much hand-wringing. I'd like a monitor without these backlight problems, but from what I've read, this is very common these days--with any monitor. I hope I'm wrong; I'd buy a uniformly performing monitor in a minute.
Pros:good color, excellent service
Cons:very bad backlight bleeding

Review 11 for Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with LED
I have been using this monitor for the better part of a Month now. It has been an excellent buy. This monitor replaces my old Dell 2209wa as an external monitor for my Macbook Pro and a display for my XBox. Colors are excellent and response is great for an IPS display. I was a bit concerned with some of the issues people have had with backlight bleed but must say, mine is great. Maybe I just lucked out or maybe quality control has improved.
I highly recommend this monitor as an excellent alternative to more expensive displays.

Review 12 for Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with LED
The U2713HM is one of the most frustrating products I've purchased recently.
First of all, I really like the colors and image quality. I'm an amateur photographer who doesn't need wide gamut support, and after calibration I'm able to print pictures that match what I see on the screen. I'm also a programmer, and the size is great for writing code. I game occasionally and the graphics feel great and I haven't noticed any input lag.
Now for the bad points. I've tried 4 different U2713HMs from 3 different stores (including directly from Dell) with different manufacturing dates and countries, and they all have quality issues.
By far the worst issue is the buzzing sound when there's a lot of text. I see this often when reading Wikipedia, news articles, or programming documentation. Some of the monitors were worse than others, but they all buzz to some degree. Out of desperation I even tried a U2713H, Dell's flagship 27" monitor, and even that buzzed. The other issues I've run into included a stuck red pixel on one monitor, and a broken button on another monitor.
It's unfortunate since I really wanted to like this monitor, and was hopeful enough to buy it 4 different times. The image quality is great, and I like the design of the monitor and the stand. Dell and the other stores I've bought from have also been great in dealing with returns. However, I cannot recommend a monitor that consistently has so many problems. If you don't read anything then you might be happy, but if you do a lot of reading then sooner or later the buzzing will drive you crazy.
Pros:photo editing, software development, Gaming, movies

Hello Graybear,
I am sorry to hear that you ran into issues with your U2713HM monitors. If you ever have a stuck pixel that is white, red, green, or blue on the all black background, check out this link: http://dell.to/Z9gr8W. It has information on our pixel policy and a possible cure for a stuck pixel.
Buzzing noise with monitors is sometimes associated with the brightness. Try lowering the brightness to see if that can help or eliminate the noise. If you still are experiencing the monitor noise, reach out on our Dell Community Forum Monitor Board (http://dell.to/oepQB0). The support agents may be able to troubleshoot and help resolve your concerns.
Hope this can help!

Waited a long time for this monitor to go on sale. Love the extra real estate. Counldn't see upgrading to a larger monitor with just 1920x1080. With the 2560x1440, I can fit just about everything that I used to display on two 24" monitors. USB 3.0 was another major plus. Allowed me to get rid of USB 2.0 hub. Pictures and movies look great. Was worth the wait. Also bought Display Port cable with monitor. Works fine.
Pros:network management

I was really impressed by the picture quality of the screen. Nice colors and a great anti glare coating. I don't know if I've got a bad one (I hope so), but I have a really bad brownish backlight bleed in the lower left corner and a lighter one in the upper right corner. The bad uniformity is even noticeable in darker game scenes (not totally black). Never saw that on any other screen (and I tried a lot). I found a few forum posts of other users with the same problem. Posted pictures of them almost looked like my monitor. I will try to get a replacement. Cheers

The monitor looks great. Sharp picture, not too bright, no detectable screen reflection, and nice resolution. The stand seems sturdy, and the USB 3.0 ports on the side are a big plus (no more crawling under the desk to plug in USB devices). I'm thinking about getting another one as a secondary screen.
Only complaint is the price, but really you get what you pay for.

I bought two of the U2713HM monitors with LED last year. They are great to work with and very clear. However, just recently, I noticed that one of the monitors has become a lot dimmer than the other one (yes, both are set on the same brightness) and the color on the dimmer monitor has started to yellow.
I will be calling Dell to see if I can exchange the problem monitor.

Review 18 for Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with LED
The U2713HM is the best monitor I've ever owned. Colors are rich and vibrant, white is actually "white", and black levels are great. It was so good out of the box that none of my calibration efforts could improve it.
There's good reason to buy this product directly from Dell. The first monitor I received was great but had a power supply problem, it laid down in three hours. Although that was frustrating and unfortunate, one quick call to tech support and they immediately shipped a replacement as well provided a shipping label to return the product at their cost.
I have seen this product offered by other retailers saving a few bucks, but the warranty is not the same. Purchased anywhere else I would have had to wait for an RMA #, send the product back at my cost, and wait until it was received to get another monitor. I don’t think so!
So three cheers for a great product, but most importantly, great support...

Review 20 for Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with LED
It is a great monitor but it is annoying that nowhere in the Dell site or even the product user manual does it say that you need to use a DVI-D cable to get the maximum resolution that is advertised all over the place.
I am using it with a Dell laptop and using a HDMI cable you only get 1920 x 1080 which is great but does not look very crisp due to the fact that it is not the native resolution of the monitor.
Only after spending half hour on the phone with their support did someone finally tell me that in order to get the native resolution you have to use a DVI-D cable, otherwise you get lower resolution.
This is fine for those using a desktop which normally offers this option off the shelf, but for those of us using a laptop that is simply not available.
Using the HDMI the text on my screen is just not crisp. You need to fiddle with the sharpness in order to try to get crisp text, but then you will notice the pixels more than what you should.
I'm giving it a 3 star because it looks like it can be a great monitor if you are able to use DVI-D. For those using HDMI or something else, first make sure that you can get the native resolution or otherwise you can get a poor image in your new and expensive monitor.
Will try to get around this with a docking station, which will cost me even more money.

Anonymous123456,
We apologize that the experience with your Dell UltraSharp U2713HM was not perfect. We value your feedback and would like the opportunity to try and correct the issues. Most of the new laptops come equipped with a display port or a mini-display port and I would suggest you try to connect to the display port on this monitor. That should give you a resolution of 2560 x 1440.
Since you have also mentioned that you connected a dock, and if it supports a dual link connectivity, make sure your using a dual-link DVI cable.
