Another great Dell rig....

PostedAugust 13, 2009
Yes, I would recommend this product
Well, after having my Dell XPS Gen 3 Pent. 3.4GHz system for a breakdown-free 6 years, I decided to modernize my equipment (for flight simulation software, which is very taxing on a system) to a i7-975/GTX 285 730x H2C air-cooled system.
This is my second Dell, as stated, and in both instances, I have been most satisfied, from the first of ordering my computer...right through to when it was delivered to the house. Both systems came as specified, both had no shipment damage, and both coming out of the packaging were without blemish and pristine from the factory. For performance, I am blown away by my new 730x gaming rig. The quality-of-build is superb. The size of the cabinet...makes for great internal cooling, with my system's interior running at a very cool 78F and with the copper-bottom-into-8 heat pipe air cooler on top of the i7-975 CPU, lets it run at a VERY CHILLING 38C!!! Most impressive, to be sure! I have had my system running for about two weeks now, with not one bad comment to make, or to report any system failure, or disappointment. Based on two great systems from Dell...this one won't be my last. I could spend an hour typing about the awesome performance combining a i7-975 CPU with nVidia's GTX 285 GPU, gives you, but will only say that it has MORE than exceeded even my stringent demands! A winner, an absolute winner (the Dell 730x H2C) in merit, construction, and sheer performance. Great job, Dell! Great product! Most satisfied!

XPS 730x Review

Yes, I would recommend this product
Ordered end of June, 09: received July 2nd. 730x, Core i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz, Full XPS package, without H2C. Bought from Dell Outlet. Absolutely satisfied with this! I usually build my own systems, but didn't feel like it this time, so I bought a "gaming" rig. I overclocked it, out of the box, to 3.3Ghz and its been stable ever since. I am using Win7 build 7100. I wiped the drive and installed it in about 20 minutes. All the drivers are here, and they work. If they didn't have a Win7 driver, I just used a Vista driver and all the bells and whistles work. Plays the latest games without *any* problems at all. The dual 9800GT cards work beautifully! You could park your car on the case: its that tough! The X-Panel looks great and the lighting is awesome. I recommend this PC to anyone, without reservation. Good job on this one Dell!!

slow speed

PostedJuly 23, 2009
No, I do not recommend this product.
I purchased this machine as a replacement for my XPS gen5. The 730x with overclocked processor is slower than my old machine. In fact it is slower than my studio 15.9 laptop. Add to all that a core dump every now and then and a boot time that is way out of line for a $4500 unit, gets it a no go from me. The ultra sharp monitor has no way to color correct the screen. I'll go back to my old ultra sharp with color matching controls. Dell seems to be having quality problems. Two out of two in the last 6 months have been DOA.

My goodness- what a MONSTER!!!!!

I had heard that this was a big computer, and I really wasn't prepared for it when the FedEx guy delivered- when I saw the box, I thought they might have accidentally shipped two machines, or had perhaps thrown in a free 21" CRT monitor to boot- that is THE biggest computer I've EVER seen, in a gigantic box. So far so good- the first thing I did was delete Vista and install linux- Vista seemed to work fine, but I like linux much more and it's a lot more practical for what I do. linux of course had issues with the Nvidia graphic card and the dual monitor setup (what linux system doesn't like to struggle with that?), so I took care of that first; still setting up the system and getting my drivers and such straight, but I'm pretty happy with the machine. At first glance, it looked a bit cheap and tacky (especially that tail fin thing on the bottom), but the more I played around, the more I liked it- sweet machine. I especially like the display lights in the back and the cool blue lighting up front- quite a nice effect! The only issue thus far was some weird problem I encountered when I needed to boot from the CD/DVD drive- don't know why it doesn't do it consistently, probably worth checking out. Pretty satisfied so far, and I'm glad I don't have to move until next year- GEEZ, this is a BIG, big computer.

Heavy and Huge is what this is. No kidding when you hear "it is huge" it IS!
Bought a 630 and the 730x at the same time. 630 arrived first, set it up and was pleased with the speed but then the 730x arrived.
This computer is amazing! It is fast, fast, fast. It will run anything out there from BF2 to quickbooks enterprise at the same time will using adobe.
YES you could build it for less money, been there done that several times. There is something to be said for opening the box and having everything work, no need to open it up and play around with the insides. Everything is tested and made to work with each other.
Make sure you get 6 megs ram, waste to have only 3. Keyboard and mouse is cheap but I think most people buying this are serious computer users and probably have their own mouse/keyboard already.
Check your drivers I know several were out of date already!
If you are looking for the holy grail of computers this is it!!!!!

After having my DELL 450mhz purchased in X-mas of 1997, 12yrs later, I go from the Ferrari of the day (Mondial) to the newest generation (Ferrari Enzo or F430). The discount code I used, led to a total of $2,200. No need for monitor or speakers or printer as what I had was enough, so that saved on cost.
Pros:
Lightening quick is the name of the game.
Many many connections available (front, rear).
Love the backlighting to see the connections when fumbling in the dark.
Cons:
Cheap keyboard. Upgrade to the PS/2 version.
USB ports are not labelled so when I plugged in my printer cable into anyone, I never got a printout until I realized, that wasn't the one.
Not a major con, but........MAN the past reviewers weren't kidding when they said this PC is huge! LITERALLY it dwarfs my old one. And the shipping box it came in was even bigger. Think KING-KONG size.
Other than that, this PC should last me a LONG, LONG TIME!

The DVD drive of my 730x only read CD from a week a ago. Rap from Dell just tried to push me to upgrade the warranty even I still in cover. Finally i gave up on the warranty and going to swap the old DVD drive from my other computer. 730x is a great system over all. May be the DVD is just an unique issue.

This machine is VERY FAST .. the Intel Core i7-965 Extreme doesn't disappoint! Believe the other post that this machine is very large and heavy .. almost like a tower server. I didn't quite understand that until I saw the box. The build quality is very solid. I always inspect the "guts" of every machine I order and I was amazed at the organization of the components inside the case .. very spacious.
I considered this machine over a new Alienware ALX X58. I feel as though I got just as much bang for a whole lot less buck (Thanks Dell Outlet!).

Very nice system....But a few things.......

PostedMay 23, 2009
Yes, I would recommend this product
Well i got my 730x i7 940 "air cooled" system. Had it for about 2 weeks now. Build quality is awesome, as many stated the case is HUGH and VERY solid. You can drop this thing off a building and it would survive.
First the......
Pros
Awesome build quality
Lots of room for upgrades and moving around
Very fast i7 940 but i have not really had it under load yet
temps are good ( non overclocked )
tons of fans that you have complete control over
the LED lighting looks very nice
Cons
PLEASE READ! The 730x is ONLY capable of 6gb of ram MAX! Regardless of what the manual or salesmen may tell you, The motherboard will NOT support 3x4gb sticks! So the system is locked to only 6gb of ram! This has been confirmed by a Dell tech and 20 other people
Expect some bugs when you first get it going. I advise before you do anything, wipe the drive clean and do a fresh install with newest drivers. Its a high end system so you will need to do a little adjusting before you get it running perfect.
When you first start up the system, all fans are at max for about 5-10 secs, it sounds like a jet plane is landing!!
Dells new cd-rom pop down drive bay doors are very annoying! I did not know that the XPS line had these also. Its very hard to close the drive when the door is down because the door is blocking the eject button, youll have to push the drive in with your hand rather then using the eject button.
thats all for now.
Overall i paid 2,000 for this i7 system, If i would have built one myself i was looking at around 1,700.00 with top of the line specs. With the Dell i got a 3yr warranty so i gave a little to get a little. Very happy with it so far. Going to throw in a few upgrades myself ( cheaper that way ) and it should be pretty powerfull. But as of right now, i am very happy.
The only major issue is the 6gb of ram thing. Though 6gb of ram cannot really benefit anything at the moment, who knows what will come along in 1-2-3 years?

It's MASSIVE, it's FAST and EXPENSIVE. If you have money to spend then go for it. The casing is nice and massive. The delivery box is so huge that delivery guy thought we are buying a server. In general it's a very stable rig and I have NOT encounter any problem/ crashes etc. However, if needed, support options include 24/7, day/night/weekend on-site service, as well as online self support.
The Specs
1. i7, Vista 64, 6Gb RAM
2. NVIDIA 2 x 9800GT 512M (SLI)
3. DELL H2C Cooling system
4. Creative XFi Titanium sound card
4. Incorporated Alienware FX - cool
5. Hardware RAID 1 640Gb
6. Gigabit ethernet
7. 23" Widescreen LCD
CONS
1. No built-in wireless card, but can easily upgarded - currently using D-Link.
2. I got the ones with 2 x Nvidia 9800GT (SLI) - quite weak for this rig. Later upgraded to GTX295.
There are other powerful rig out there, but I think DELL offer a good package (product & support) at where I live, thus - I would recommend.

Great PC, but overpriced

I've had the 730x for a few weeks, its a great machine!!! Like the other reviews indicated, its size is imposing. It doesn't fit under a standard home desk.
I bought mine from the outlet, with a 15% off coupon and free shipping which sealed the deal for me. I highly suggest getting it from the outlet where the prices are much more competitive to other i7 models.
The performance is outstanding, very fast and efficient. Games look great!!!
Overall, very happy with purchase, but wouldn't have bought it for full retail price as other companies comparable models cost less. For the outlet price around $1100 before coupons, its a deal.
My Specs:
i7 920
Vista Home Premium

ATI Radeon HD 4850

What a system

PostedApril 16, 2009

All in all I'm so happy with this computer. When I start looking for a new one, I always get hooked on the higher end systems, as happened here. I'm happy to own one, even though I will have to eat beans for months to help pay for it.
Pros:The XPS 730X is a massive system, I'm not sure where to start. As has been stated before, this thing starts up like a jet plane and then quiets down to hardly any sound. And it is huge, read the dimensions to make sure you have room for this system, but you would want to work around that just to own this! The inside is so great, with so much room for upgrades and such, the theater lighting is beyond cool, makes working in the case a breeze. The LED Alienware lighting is to fun to play with, you can make a light show in the room the comps in. Really consider the buying options though, there are some upgrades/parts that you could add yourself for less cost. All in all a really superb system. Look for coupons on the web, you can sometimes get 25% off they system, either to reduce the cost or add more upgrades! Thanks Dell! :)
Cons:Did I say this was massive? I was glad I wasn't alone when the box came, I would have never been able to get it out! The BIOS loading screen takes a bit long, it's worth it once it gets going though. I bought the XPS 730 in Jan, now they come with a bigger hard drive, but hey, thats just a bummer for me, not a Con on the system in any way.

Totally Happy with this system

Surfing around on the Outlet last week, and found this config for less than $2000.00.
I7 940 (Air Cooled)
Radeon 4870 x2 (2 gb)
6 GB DDR3
2x 1 TB Hard drive
19 n 1 Reader w/Bluetooth
It shipped quick, and in my hands in less than 3 days. Although it's a refurb, I got the 3 year warranty, so I'm hopeful if I find any problems, Dell will help to correct. (I personally have never had a problem in the past...) I've been working with Dell systems for nearly 5 years now, and I can't say I've ever been disappointed in their systems or service. This system reinforces that thought even more. Very please with everything about this system.
Pros:Everything! It's faster than anything I've ever used, and so far, stable as a rock. Everything is nice and smooth on my 24" monitor running at a full 1920x1200. World of Warcraft and SPORE never looked so good! As an IT tech for over 25 years, I can safely say this is the best machine I've had EVER!
Cons:It's a little larger (physically) than I expected, (had to modify my desk a bit) but that's minor compared to the POWER of this thing.

Pricey unfortunately.
i7 920 running at 3.8 hz saves over $700
Smokin processor, but a 9800GT - go for the extra $200 and get a GTX285 - still saving $500
Was it 3 gigs of RAM - what's wrong with 6 (3 is a good start to run Vista)?
Performance 4
Value 2
=3
All in all - there's $800-$1200 that can be saved with equal or better performance if you do it right. Sorry - can't do for almost $3000
$1800 = i7 940 @ 3.8ghz (I should have went with the 920!!!)
6 gig 1600 mhz RAM
2 x 20x dvd DL burners
800 watt power supply (trying to save a buck)
2 x 320 gig hd (striped of course)
500 gig secondary HD
and a cheap asp case cuz they don't mean shirt (all went into an old Alienware case anyway)!!!
Pros:Video Editing, Gaming, anything else i can throw at it

Everyone always jacks on about how its costs so much and that you can build a pc yourself for less. True. But self built pcs will ever be as stable as this, its a never ending sea of tinkering, god knows I have been there numerous times. With this I have a computer that never crashes, ever, for half a year now anyway, and that is able to play everything on the modern maket with a terrible ease. And when it starts to get outdated it is an easy thing to replace some ram, throw in an extra card for some sli action and clock the core up a few notches.
It cost more, but what you pay for is pure build quality. Also the alienware leds are pretty cool too. Of course making your own pc is a cheap alternative to going on a IT course to improve your troubleshooting skills...
Pros:Incredibly stable. Never crashes. Full of awesome Stays icey cold in the most trying of circumstances. So easy to upgrade to bigger and better things
Cons:Certainly a bit costy um.... Case does collect a bit of dust ah.. Dell speakers suck?

Size is massive, Like no joke from the ground this thing will come up to your mid thy, also it is about 12 inches wide, I was thinking it would be slightly bigger, but its litterally like 2 normal PC's combined.
Pros:Quick, easy to start up, I7, good memory, sweet looking case and cool lighting.
Cons:No Dongle out of the box so I couldnt use my duel monitors, Dells support wasnt bad although it was slightly far fetched what the person was trying to do, re install drivers? Oh well, also some weird sound issues that I am yet to figure out.

Best Purchase Ever?

PostedMarch 16, 2009
No, I do not recommend this product.
Good Machine, not great (My new one really leaves this one for dead). Also unfortunately overpriced. I really loved Dell products in the past, but they've lost touch with what people need, and it has become about the money. Especially in this strained financial climate, I thought Dell would be leading the way in passing on relief to the consumer.
Pros:Good Quality Product
Cons:I bought one of these, but when I got it I did some research for parts upgrades. Upon doing so I decided to build another PC with an i920 (overclocked to 3.8 Ghz), 6Gb (ddr3-1600 mhz) RAM, 500Gb Seagate Harddrive, 300Gb Velociraptor Hard drive, 24" Acer Monitor, geforce gtx 285 1Gb graphics, Antec 900 gamers case, Vista 64 Home Premium etc. which I was able to do for only $3000. This PC is exremely overpriced, and with not even as good parts as what I got for two thirds the price.
