High perfomance hardware, awful assembly and reliablilty

PostedApril 16, 2013
No, I do not recommend this product.
I've been using 3450 for about a year and a half. During that time I had problems with hybrid video, with the display frame, and the battery. Just spend more money and buy more expensive computers, don't be fooled by 3450's price and hardware.
Pros:fast, cheap
Cons:noisy cooler, low battery capacity, fragile, low quality of assembly

Excellent except for 2 things

PostedAugust 19, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
Bought the machine from Dell Outlet and I am very satisfied. This is a replacement for a Dell Studio 1558 where the plastics have started to come apart.
Lets just get the bad right out the way
1. Screen is pretty bad even for a business class machine. limited viewing angles for sure and definately a step down from the 1080p screen of the Studio.
2. Replacing the HDD is a real pain in the rump roast. You litterally have to dissassemble the machine to get to it.
System config
Intel i7 2640
AMD 7650 1GB
8GB ram (replaced the 4GB in the machine)
750GB 7200rpm hard drive (removed the 500GB 5400 drive that came with the machine)
BD-Rom burner (replaced DVD drive that came with the system)
Webcam with digital array mics
Fingerprint Reader
backllit keyboard
Cintrino 1030 Wireless N + BT 3.0 EDR
4USB (1 eSATA combo, 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0)
VGA and HDMI for video out
Ethernet
1-8 card reader
Express slot
Mic and headphone jacks
Inital Impressions
System came in a rather large box and included the laptop, charger, Windows 7 Pro x64 DVD, and 2 books for regulations and warranty.
The machine is handome looking and the silver finish and black matte plastics are a nice welcome change from the shiney stuff used on the Studio 1558 machine.
Turn the machine on and it prompts you to set it up. took only a few moments and the machine was ready to go at the desktop. Ran Windows update and 63 updates later, machine wsa up to date. Installed latest Intel software for the Centrino card and voilla ready to start customizing it by loading my programs.
Thank you Dell for keeping the company installed software to a minimum, it is appreciated. (Only has Dell Support, webcam, and Data Safe plus Trend Micro, Roxio Creator and Cyberlink Power DVD 9.5 Software installed)
Performance
What can I say? It's fast for a laptop and offers above average gaming performance. The slow HDD seems to be holding it back a little but that was fixed somewhat when I put in the 750GB hard drive mentioned above in. Also, it is recommended that you populate the other memory slot so that the memory controller operates at max efficiency.
Batman Arkham CIty runs at a nice solid 40fps with DX heatures enabled and
Build quality is well above the pricepoint of the machine there is no chassis flex and no creaking of plastics. The fihish does a fairly good job of hiding the finger prints. The white LEDs are pleasing to the eye as well. The trackpad responds well to inputs and it is nice to have 2 dedicated buttons that have a nice solid feel to them and let off a nice click when you press them. The chrome accents around the keyboard and track pad are a nice touch.
Pros:portable entertainment, games, work

Great machine. Backlit keyboard rocks, get it for sure. I only wish I had got the solid state drive for faster start-ups and to save weight. Just a beautiful, solid little machine. Elegant design, easily deployed, lots of highly functional bells and whistles. And I am hard to please, believing that good stuff can be found without spending maximum dollars. The machine here is much better than many, many I looked at over the past couple months of browsing and cost less than most of those.

Once i bought this product.. At the first look i was impressed with its exteriors and the rugged look that makes it more professional in appearance.. I had installed a 4gb ram along with the 2gb inbuilt which boosted the performance and i should say that multi-tasking and boot up and web browsing are really fast.. no lags .. the con however is i was disappointed that the one i bought dint have a backlit keyborad which i felt was a very improtanat feature of this notebook.. anyhow one of the best buys i have made.. and the cool display doesnt strain my eyes at all.
Pros:business, browsing, multi-tasking, mutimedia

Hello Jash,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Vostro 3450. We are glad to know that you are enjoying your purchase. A backlit keyboard is an optional feature on this system. You can still add it after the point of sale by ordering it from Spare Parts (Part#PVDG3 ) and replacing it yourself (see the manual:dell.to/SmQi77).

Again, thank you for your feedback, and have a great day – Gina.

I wouldn't recommend this machine for gaming as it's video card and specs are not up to par, however for the money spent on this computer it runs quite nicely for internet streaming.
It is a pretty quick little machine and boots up fast.

Great laptop with a lot in it.

PostedApril 19, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
I shopped around for a long time looking for a smaller laptop with a lot of power, especially 1 GB of discrete video RAM, and not costing too much! The 3450 fit the bill nicely. It was also very hard to find a non-glossy screen. I would have given this laptop 4 stars but, considering the value, I bumped it up to 5.
Pros:
-non glossy screen
-good battery life (not great but good)
-plenty of power for the money
-nice keyboard
-back lit keyboard
-1 GB video RAM
-good/solid build (not great but good)
-bright screen
Cons:
-little bit of flex in screen
-"Delete" key needs to be pressed hard to respond consistently
-touchpad scrolling could be better
-keyboard, fan, and optical drive are somewhat noisy (thankfully I do not care at all).
Overall, you could pay a lot more and get a much more solid and slimmer built laptop (with better battery life too), but if you are primarily just needing the performance, this is an excellent machine.
Pros:research, organization management, writing, Gaming

Really disappointed

PostedMarch 14, 2012
No, I do not recommend this product.
This is the third Dell computer I have purchased in the last 4 years. I bought the Inspiron 14 inch red one. I really hate it so far! I wanted to love it like I loved the last two.
Pros: it's red, it was just over $1000, I liked my other 2.
Cons: I bought the McAfee 3 year plan and it was supposed to be installed. It was but just for a month so I just spent the last 3 hours trying to get it to update enough show my subscription. Dell says deal with McAfee, they don't help with this. The next thing is the touch pad buttons are terrible!! Seriously, you will be shocked at how the buttons are. They are nothing like my last laptops. The keyboard buttons are better though. After 2 hours with the laptop I was already looking at the return policy to send it back to get a new one. It is that bad. Do yourself a favour and buy something you can try. The 30 day return is only if you never open it or its broken. It doesn't matter if you just hate it. The side covers on the usb key are very annoying, but that could be because I am just mad now. The disk drive door keeps popping open too. FOr no reason. It won't read a disk I have in there so I took out the disk and still the drive keeps opening. hopefully it never stays closed so I can send it back. They will probably just make me take another one though. Too bad. I don't know what happened at Dell over the last three years but what a shame. I really liked my other two (Both inspiron 15). I think I will give the kids this one and take theirs. This is terrible.

Great Value

I needed a new laptop to manage both personal and business matters while on the go. However, I did NOT have much room in my budget. I decided on the Vostro 3450 as a "value" system. I am VERY pleased with the performance thus far. I have been using the system now for three months with NO notable "cons." The Pros are: (1) value for price, (2) dependability, (3) appearance, (4) size/weight/portability. I am sure there are faster and more impressive systems, but I believe I received an OUTSTANDING value for my investment. Thank you, Dell. This is the 10th system I have purchased from you. I am certain it will not be my last!

Bought the 3450 for my wife and have had it for a few weeks. The real action took place on the first two days. We're new to Windows 7 and were having a lot of trouble getting it to respond properly. Reinstalled Windows; reinstalled Office (twice) and still not working. Finally called support number; they had us run some diagnostics. Bad hard drive! New one was brought to our home and installed in a day. Lots of reinstalling, etc. but it runs great now. Pay up for the higher levels of support! Its worth it to speak to N. Americans.

Vostra 3450 after 2 weeks

PostedJanuary 5, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
OK – I have been using my new Vostro 3450 for a couple of weeks now so I can give my review on it.
It is the Vostro 3450 with an, i5-2430, 4gigs of Ram, 320 gig HD, and a Radeon 6630 video card.
Overall I am very happy with my purchase and I would buy another one if it is on a Day of Deals.
The biggest comment I have about the laptop is that it is bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. I use this for my personal laptop and I have a Latitude E4300 for my work laptop. The Latitude is smaller in dimensions and weight. The Vostro has an almost 1 inch plastic “border” around the screen so it is a big 14.1 laptop. It is also heavier than I thought it would be. If you think you are getting a small, thin, light laptop that is sort of like an ultra-book – this is not the laptop for you. I use it as a desktop replacement and don’t move it around a lot – but I can if I need/want to.
The screen is of high quality and I have no complaints about viewing movies, YouTube, pictures and computer games.
The keyboard is a little different from other laptops I used and it takes a little getting used to but I am happy with it and I LOVE the fact that it is backlit. I will never buy another laptop unless it has a backlit keyboard.
The outputs like HDMI, USB 3.0, optical drive are all welcome and worked great.
The laptop started up quickly right out of the box and the set up was easy. There is no bloatware – other than a Trend Micro security product that was easy and quick to remove. I like the finger print reader – it was easy to set up and works well.
The things I am not happy with I already mentioned, the overall size and weight were more than expected but are exactly what Dell says they are in the specs. I also don’t like the track pad buttons. They are a little stiff and it takes more pressure to click and hold than I like or am used to with other laptops. Another problem is that when I run a computer game in high resolution (can easily be changed with the Radeon software provided) the fan comes on quickly and it is louder than other fans I am used to.
I get good battery life when I am using it on the power saving mode instead of the video card performance mode. However, using the video card and performance mode on the battery for games - the battery is used quickly. But this is expected.
The things I am really happy about are the performance, the value, the backlit keyboard and the outputs. It also comes with software and application discs and a really easy to use back-up manager to make system and back-ups. Also, after a week I put in another 4 gig stick of Ram. This was extremely easy to do! However, I didn’t really notice a difference in performance except for the most memory hogging computer games. This is a great laptop for the value – I would buy again and recommend to my friends – if you don’t expect/need a thin/light ultrabook.

I bought my first ever laptop and I'm proud that it is a Vostro 3450(Core i5 2.40GHz,4GB). The on-line delivery was very fast. Thank You Dell Sales, You never kept me waiting !!
Performance
------------------
The Core i5 2.40 GHz with turbo-boost and hyper-threading guarantee you the best performance. You could often see the performance monitor frequency jump up to 3 GHz
if multiple threads are running. The 64 Bit Windows 7 Professional ensures that my 4 GB RAM is utilized to the maximum capacity.
I would be honest if I say my Vostro never lets me down.
Entertainment
--------------------
The video quality is OK but not excellent and the audio output is more on the treble side. But this OK for me as my laptop is used more for business.
Miscellaneous
---------------------
As somebody have pointed out earlier, the fan is a bit noisy. A BIOS update could fix this.
The keypad is handy as it is easy to sort out the individual keys which enhances the typing speed.
The fingerprint reader saves a few seconds during my log-in.
Moreover 14" dimension makes the vostro fit easily in my bag.
I would give this product an overall rating of 4/5 and would recommend this product to small business users.
Regards.
