Awesome Workstation

PostedApril 27, 2013
Yes, I would recommend this product
I have had my M6700 for about 5 days now and I love it. The Nvidia Quadro K3000M GPU is amazing and I can work faster than ever before, especially on a portable CPU. I chose a Quad Core i7 and upgraded to 8GB Ram. I use After Effects and Blender 3D along with many other editing and compositing software and it all runs quite smooth.I chose the Premier Color IPS RGB screen and it looks fantastic. No complaints there. I didn't buy this CPU for it's speakers or gaming capabilities so I can't comment on that. The only thing I found odd was the touch-pad is not in the center of the chassis. It is centered below the keyboard and with the num-pad on the right it is a little wierd at first but honestly I will be using a mouse most of the time anyways. Overall a great machine.
Pros:fast, doesn't come loaded with random software, plenty of video outputs

Excellent Performance, bad ergonomic design

PostedApril 14, 2013
No, I do not recommend this product.
I found the construction of this laptop just ok, not excellent by any means. Tapping in the mouse pad sounds like tapping on an empty CD case, kind of cheap vibe. The keyboard sounds very “plastic-clicky”. I imagine a person next to you would find the noise quite annoying.
I found the palm rest area extremely uncomfortable due to the laptop’s non-rounded edges. It is most uncomfortable for the hand using the touch pad which often rest over the lower edge of the laptop creating an uncomfortable pressure point under your wrists. Furthermore, the holes where the screen latches when it closes are at the edge of the palm rest, and have razor sharp edge – as the hand you use for touchpad navigation moves repeatedly from the keyboard down to use the touchpad, these tiny cavities edges scratch your skin to cause noticeable discomfort under your wrists over time. You don’t realize how bad this laptop design is until you start using it for a long time and your arms start soaring from being in pressed against these square edges and pointy corners. For me this was an unexpected show stopper when considering this laptop as a full time replacement for a desktop. I spend long hours writing code and you wrists and forearms will hurt.
As for performance goes, this machine is outstanding. My system setup is 8GB ram, 256GB mSata SSD, 300GB 7200rpm HDD, I added an extra 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD, chose the IPS screen, and an i7 CPU @ 2.7GHz. My line of work is web development, video/music streaming, and Linux/VirtualBox. I have no complaints with the speed this machine run my design tools.
Although the IPS screen is it is gorgeous, the 1080p resolution, I think is a mistake. We developers need tons of VERTICAL real state, this laptop disappoints big time; Not having a 1920x1200 on-the-go hurts, hurts VERY MUCH.
The sound coming out of this laptop was an unexpected surprise… terrible beyond believe! The internal speaker in this laptop has no more quality than the speakers in my Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. I consider the sound reproduction is this laptop unusable for a customer demo –shame.
I do not run 3D apps, but if you are curious, the ATI Fire card scored 7.4 in the Windows experience test.
In summary, if you are after performance, pairing this machine with SSDs will sure exceed your expectations in speed and responsiveness.
The 1080p display it is drawback. This laptop needs a 1920x1200 or a retina-like display.
Finally, as far as usability goes if you are using this machine mostly in a docking station with a external mouse and keyboard, it will work awesome for you. If you intent to use the laptop on its own, mostly on-the-go, or on a desk, the sharp and pointy edges will make your wrists and forearms very miserable. In ergonomics, I give this laptop an “F”.
What good is a super powerful laptop if you don’t look forward using it? For me is love/hate relationship where hate is winning with each day that passes.
Pros:excellent performance, outstanding responsiveness, solid wifi stability
Cons:uncomfortable bad ergonomics, terrible sound, no high 1920x1200 option
Response from Dell.comBy DonaldDforDellCustomer ReviewsApril 15, 2013
Hello elopezr,

I am sorry to hear you are not pleased with the chassis edges. Typing teachers have been telling us, ergonomics means not resting our palms and instead straighten your wrists to decrease the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome during typing. Still, it should not cut you! I am glad to hear you like the performance. I can also appreciate your input on what would make it a better system.

Thanks for sharing!

Another generation and still I won't upgrade

PostedFebruary 22, 2013
Yes, I would recommend this product
I'm a happy owner of an M6400 mobile workstation. This computer has been my workhorse for years. I've been looking forward to upgrade to a brand new Dell Precision mobile workstation. Yet, I'm disappointed that the new models lack a full resolution 1920*1200 display, just like the one I run on my M6400. The only available options are 1920*1080 which is disappointing for a computer that will be used for graphics work. Hey, since I'm writing this, I may even ask for a 2560*1440 display.
On the ports side, I just love the e-SATA connection. But having a thunderbolt option would be really appreciated. There's a lot of hardware from Blackmagic Design that I won't be able to use, like cameras and external video cards.

Exceptional workstation

Yes, I would recommend this product
I upgraded from my previous precision M90 to the M6700 and I am very pleased with my purchase.
Just like the previous generations, the built quality is great, performance is exceptional and my god the IPS screen is absolutely amazing.
The system is super fast, having many graphic applications open at the same time and working with multiple monitors is not a problem with the Nvidia K5000. Performance in 3D applications and rendering engines is simply outstanding.
I would recommend configuring with 2 hard drives, one 128 GB SSD for the operating system an another for everything else.
Pros:graphics, rendering, drafting

wonderful computer

Yes, I would recommend this product
Pros
I almost bought an Inspiron when I found the Studio Slim. I love the versatility it has and of course the speed, reliability, and the cool sleek black design. I live in the middle of nowhere with satelite internet and it works better than any other computer I have put on this connection. I have a 60" wide screen this is connected to with HDMI and talk about awesome!! No, I dont do any online gaming. I would have nothing but a Dell, period.
Cons
I only regret that i did not upgrade to a larger hard drive like 1TB and get the Bluetooth package when I bought this system. I have heard alot of horror stories about Vista. When I bought this computer I didt want to pay xtra for XP. So I thought I would try Vista Home Premium. I love it!! For me XP is the thing of the past now.
