Great product that does what it is designed to do!

Yes, I would recommend this product
My company purchased a Dell NX3000 to consolidate several older file servers running Windows Server 2003. We wanted the performance benefits offered by Windows Server 2008 (SMB2) to improve file access times primarily in our engineering department. The NX3000 running Storage Server 2008 did just that, and then some. Functions that we didn't think were slow before are noticably faster now. Users have noticed the performance increases and have submitted unsolicited praise for the new file server.
As others have commented, this is not a full Windows Server 2008 OS. If you require the full features of Windows Server this is not the product for you. But, if you are in the situation that I am, with a need for a new FILE SERVER, this is a great option. You do not need to upgrade your CAL's to 2008, which was a big cost savings to our company.
Since the NX3000 is basically a R710 server, if you require full blown windows server in the future you should have no problem installing it. It's not a dead end NAS.
I am very happy with the NX3000, it does what it claims to do very well!
Pros:file server, tape backup server, print server

Not a bad appliance, not an easy install either.

This device set up nicely. Fortunately, we have access to MSDE downloads to get all of the 'add-on' features that is needed for this to run as a SAN correctly. Such as the iSCSI target driver and several other things. This is almost the same as an entry-level Aberdeen but doesn't 'self-configure' like those products. However, with an MD1000 tray or two attached, it works well.
The device is ok, the primary disks are not overly configurable but are still not bad as long as you buy them correctly. We bought ours with SAS drives in the onboard bays and SATA in the tray and have no issues with I/O running VMWare vSphere storage from it. If it was more 'self-contained' it would have rated higher but this installed like a server but without all the tools that were needed.

No, I do not recommend this product.
dont buy this save yourself a couple grand and buy the server version. You do not get any options in regards of partition setup it is simply a plug and pray item.
