Random power failures until it died completely

PostedSeptember 6, 2012
No, I do not recommend this product.
AVOID. This seems to be an early mistaken implementation of a 1U server by Dell, followed by a revised R415. I recommend the R415.
The R410 first surprised me by its loud fans. They are like turbojets. I checked fan settings in the BIOS and the settings were fine. The R415 does not behave this way. But I was going to host it at a data center, so I didn't care about the noise.
Then every week or two the server would stop completely for no apparent reason until eventually I could no longer boot it. After extensive diagnostics, I have traced this to a power-related hardware glitch but have so far been unsuccessful with Dell's tech support in getting the issue resolved or getting a warranty replacement.
Sure, the power glitch could be a random defect, but because the fan noise alone I would go with R415 instead.

Good basic server, easily upgradable, my only issue is that it is noisy compared to other servers in server room.

Fan noise

This has been fixed with a bios firmware upgrade. My R410 is very quiet when temps are below 78 degrees in the room.

I hear the power!

Pros
This server is the real deal. Has awesome performance, looks and feels strong. One thing not really apparent with doing some deep digging is what the SAS controller can support. It dose RAID 0 and 1. You can have two drives in RAID 1 or 2 or even one of each. You also have the option to RAID the RAM for fail over purposes. I am using this server for Hyper-V virtualization. Don’t have any problems with it. Runs strong and all hardware was installed and working 100%.
Cons
This server is loud! It’s not so bad when you have it running for awhile the fans slow down but it is considerably louder then my other Dell servers. None the less the performance will make you look passed that.
Changes
One thing I would like to see changed is the option to buy these server without hard drives, and cd-roms. If you do upgrade like we do I’m sure you could reuse some of your old hard drives that are still less then a year old out of decommissioned servers. Right now I sell my old server, and then have to destroy the hard drives for security proposes when I could just reuse them!

Great but LOUD

PostedJuly 30, 2009
No, I do not recommend this product.
This is an awesome example of bang for your buck servers. Had exactly everything I wanted, but was shocked at how loud it is. This is louder than any 1U server we have ever had (maybe competes with the 1750). This completely over powers 6 others servers I have in the same room in terms of noise. Still working with my rep to see if this is normal or not for an 11G server, so hopefully it can be resolved.
