Entry-level IIS Server

PostedDecember 11, 2009
Yes, I would recommend this product
Our R200 is configured with an Intel Xeon Quad-Core X3360 2.83GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, and two 300GB SAS HDDs in a RAID 1 array. My family has been using it for hosting websites and an email service. We operate a Web Hosting Service with a Home Office license.
PROS
It is very quiet, does not overheat, and is fast enough for most web applications. It is also quite cheap for a web server.
CONS
Its maximum memory is limited to only 8 Gigabytes, and it is able to support only one processor. Also, it does not support 600GB 3.5-inch 15,000rpm SAS HDDs, or Solid State Drives.
There is also no internal drive-bay for a Tape Backup Unit, which makes it difficult to backup data from the server, although this does not affect us since we don't do backups.
Pros:website hosting, email services

R200

Yes, I would recommend this product
Pros:Inexpensive but fairly powerful. It's not the 1950 by any means, but for the applications where I'm using these, I didn't need it to be.

No AHCI- ATA mode only

PostedAugust 19, 2008
No, I do not recommend this product.
Why disable AHCI?
Pros:The machine is well built, power efficient with the Intel processor, quiet and has pleasant management features like the virtual console and PXE booting.
Cons:There is no AHCI mode for the SATA controller even though the chipset supports it. Under Linux this means you cannot hotplug the SATA devices.

This is dell's fastest 1U poweredge!

PostedJuly 21, 2008
Yes, I would recommend this product
Would be great if Dell would support higher speed CPUs.
Pros:The R200's use of non-registered memory gives memory intensive programs a 10-25% boost over the PE 1950. I have tested a PE 1950 III with two 3.16GHz quad-core Xeons against a R200 with one 2.83GHz quad-core Xeon using a memory intensive program that runs 4 active threads, and the R200 consistently runs 25% faster than the PE 1950 III no matter how I tune the thread model. The key reason for the R200's advantage is the use of non-registered memory. (it's still ECC just like the PE 1950).
Cons:The maximum Xeon supported is a quad core 2.83 GHz. I am hoping Dell supports higher speeds with updated Bios.

Purchased this server for a client for a special purpose & the install went perfect, no problems at all with drivers, USB keyboard, USB DVD Drive.
i only thing i didnt like was that the hard drive is mounted upside down. Technically speaking, this shouldn't matter. I'm just picky.
Pros:length wise, short.
Cons:none i can think of.
