We purchased 5 Latitude E5510s/E5410s for a small veterinary office. The Dell salesperson had upsold me on these models since they were supposed to be more reliable than the much less expensive Vostro. Each of these have had intermittent problems with freezing up, with errors, and slow performance since buying them. There's nothing quite as frustrating as entering a medical record and then losing your data because the laptop froze. I would not purchase these again.

E5510 Powerhouse

Yes, I would recommend this product
I see alot of bad reviews for this laptop. I have purchased two and have had zero problems with either one. I'll list my loadout as it was custom.
Loadout: CPU: i5 (m460)2.53ghz RAM: 4gb HDD: 250gb 7200 rpm OS: Win 7 Pro 64bit Display: 1600x900 res. Wireless: 1590 minicard supports N networks. Webcam: Integrated Everything else is stock.
Pros- 1. Average battery power (6cell) with default settings is about 7-8 hours. With modified settings I get about 9 hours. 2. The i5 and its turbo boost yields a great performance/watt consumption ratio. 3. The added resolution lets me manage my servers easier via Remote Desktop. 4. The increased wireless performance gives me more range in my building and better speeds. 5. Webcam is good enough quiality to make skype enjoyable. 6. Good hinges I'm pretty rough and this thing keeps up.
Cons- 1. Big, but then again go buy the E-5410 if you want smaller. 2. Power button is a little junky. 3. I hate touchpads so I recomend a wireless mouse. 4. CD-ROM pops out and isn't sturdy wish they put in a slot load drive instead of tray.
I've been very satisfied with this product and being an IT professional I'm pretty picky. So there you have it. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a sturdy and fast laptop in a good price range.
Pros:it administrator, it field tech, vmware console, viso diagrams.

E5510 line of Lemons - Just get a different Model

See how E5510 Freezes and deletes your work!
No, I do not recommend this product.
If time = money at your place of business, I would think twice before you purchase this model. You'll notice a pattern of reviews that say this model freezes. And they would be correct. My company bought this to replace a slow and dying machine. Just a few weeks out of the box with the E5510, I have intermittent freezing. Dell would like to try sending me a new hard drive with a clean copy of windows. But since our company subcontracts it's IT work and I'm in a remote branch, I have to mail it back and have the IT guys fix me back up with the company software and ship it back. All said and done, I'll have spent more time fixing the new computer, than I have so far using it for work. Downtime = lost $$$. I'll update in a month and let you know if Dell took the machine back, or put me though the same mess some of the other reviewers have already written about. There are better rated machines on Dell.com, it might be safer to start with one of those.

Great laptop falls short.

No, I do not recommend this product.
The laptop is missing everything a e6510 would provide. This should be labeled a VOSTRO. I know it works with the ePort stuff, but honestly the price difference isn't enough to justify NOT getting the 6510. If you want cheap go VOSTRO, if you want the top of the line business class, go 6510/ or 6410/or in my case 4310.
Just saying.

Freezes consistently
PostedJanuary 7, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
This laptop freezes consistently, with no apparent usage pattern triggering the freeze.
It freezes for the end-user whether she's using Outlook for email, IE or Firefox for web, Word and Excel, or just letting it sit powered on but idle. (All in Windows 7 as installed by Dell.)
In my testing it froze within 20 minutes of power-on without me actually doing anything - just idle at the Desktop.
We haven't physically modified the laptop at all - all parts are as received new from Dell. Our software modifications have been limited to applying Windows updates, installing MSSE antivirus software, and joining our Active Directory forest (on which no other user is having similar trouble).
This laptop is a lemon.

Dell Failure
PostedDecember 8, 2010
No, I do not recommend this product.
I have been using this laptop for work only. This was issued to me a year ago and in that time the motherboard has been replaced four times, the wireless card replaced, it's been formatted five times by a Dell technician. The laptop consistently freezes for upto five minutes on all general programs ie. Microsoft office. Additional work software causes the computer to crash completely, windows explorer and internet explorer continually fails requiring the computer to be power cycled. Also there is a ten minute start up time. Even at idle the computer consistently sits at 70% cpu and 80% ram capacity. The hard drive is only filled to 20% capacity. This has been replaced with a new laptop of the same model and it too has the exact same problems showing it wasn't a one off that the model itself has problems.

Sales Laptop (Remote Office - Field Employee)
PostedNovember 28, 2010
Yes, I would recommend this product
I have had this Latitude for approx 3 mos now and so far everything has worked pretty well. Windows 7 is loaded on it and I'm not sure about anyone else but I really miss WinXP! As for the laptop, it seems to be well built and nice looking for a corporate type of laptop. The battery meter usually says that it has approx 9 hrs of life right when I unplug it. I doubt that it would last that long but it does seem to hold a charge fairly well. The longest that I have used it without the AC cable is about 3 hrs with a dim screen. I still had about 2-3 hrs of juice left I think. I do use an external monitor with it and it works fine. It is a Samsung SyncMaster 2233 that I got at Sam's Club for approx. $190. It's a 22" screen plugged into the analog VGA slot with the two screws that have to hold it in. No problem with loading the drivers. I also use it for GoToMeeting Webinars and Online Meetings which works well. The internal Mic could be better as well as the internal speakers. I have a Samson GoMic which is a USB mic that I got at Best Buy (music section) for $69 bucks and it works really good but doesn't block out unwanted sounds. The mic is about 5 inches tall and clips to the screen when the laptop is open and has a stereo 3.5mm jack so you can monitor your voice when you talk since both ears are covered with headphones. That configuration seems to work well. The internal wireless NIC is great! I've been online with it for 3 mos now and I have never been dropped due to the fault of the NIC. It also has Bluetooth that I use every now and then which works well. Its got an SD card slot on the left side, 4 USB's (I wish it had 6), ethernet jack, modem jack RJ11 on the back corner and a small HDMI I think on the left side. It looks kind of like a mini usb but a little different. I haven't tried to use it yet. This laptop reminds me of my old Dell sales laptop, the D620, which for me was reliable for approx 3.5 years. So far this one is doing the job for corporate type work like email, MS Office, Online meetings, presentations, etc... I would not recommend this one for gamers though. I would however recommend it for someone looking for a solid all around laptop made for people like me who are in sales or need a laptop to bring home to work remotely through a VPN or something. I hope that this review helps someone with a decision even if I helped with one feature. I know that I didn't get all of the features but my hands are starting to ache from typing. I still hate Windows 7!!! Bring my XP back!! Ha. Just kidding. I am ok with it as long as it works. It's when it doesn't that this thing becomes a frisbee. Anyway... Happy Selling or whatever it is that you do! Good luck with your new computer.

A solid corporate workhorse

I have several of these in service now and they have been greeted with enthusiasm. We use a Core i5 with 4GB and a 1600x900 screen which is an excellent display. We've encountered no such external display issues; possibly we're just fortunate. These machines are excellent value for money, attractively understated with very good performance. We've made these our current company workhorse.

Don't use vga -- ground loop interference
PostedAugust 5, 2010
No, I do not recommend this product.
They went to a digital ground on th AC adapter with this model, which is very sensitive to any noise on the ground circuit. I got static flicker on external monitor in multiple different buildings. VGA is essentially unusable due to video noise. Dell told me it was the building wiring -- which may be the case, but my conclusion is that it's too sensitive to interference use in the real world.
Gold tech support, while very attentive and polite was unable to do anything other than agree that was a ground loop problem. My client just spent 5k on new notebooks with gold tech support only to find out that they cannot be used with an external display. Dell's fix? DVI or display port -- a digital video connector doesn't exhibit the behaviou (so I was told) unfortunately, the notebook only has VGA.
The real fix -- Hum X by Ebtech fixed it in my case. You have to spend another $60 and carry another adapter to use an external monitor. (try explaining that to a non-technical user --"plug this thing (surge suppressor) into this thing (Hum X) and then plug this (AC adapter) into that before you turn on your notebook...." Yikes!
Other than this MAJOR failing, this is a good, but overpriced notebook.
