I wrote a review after 1 month and after 1 year of owning this Beast of a laptop so I figured I'd write a review after 2 years of ownership.
She lost her optical drive last January 2013 and my GPU was not recognized in the BIOS. I bought the Nivida 460M which I need for my work, but the Intel integrated graphics card worked like a champ.
I was working in Mexico at the time when everything crashed on me so I had to rely on the integrated graphics card which really hurt my production.
I flew back to Michigan to get the problems resolved and guess what? Dell services bent over backwards to solve my problems.
They sent a Tech over to my house and he replaced the Motherboard and GPU, that didn't solve the problem. So they sent me a Box to ship her back to them and they would fix it or replace it. (I sent her without the hard-drive because I have alot of work on there that I cannot lose).
5 days later it show's up at my door in perfect working condition.
Customer services calls me and E-mails me all the time to make sure everything is OK..
I'm still new to owning a Laptop and I've always built my own Desktop PC's so I never expected or thought about how important Costumer Service is for a computer, but now that I know, I'm Thankful for it
I am planning on purchasing a M18x R4 soon, without reservations.
Like I said before, Would I recommend this Product? OH YEAH
Good Product, HORRIBLE Customer Service = FRUSTRATED Consumer

Was searching a gaming laptop for the past 1 year and found the perfect all around laptop - Alienware M17x. I was hesitant at first since Dell had acquired Alienware. I have owned two Dell laptops in the past and was disappointed in quality so never thought of going back to Dell for any products. Unfortunately the problems of Dell have once again ruined this device for me. Read "THE BAD" below for more details on why I won't be coming back for any products. Not what I was expecting when purchasing a flagship laptop.
This laptop is the real deal for users who don't mind shelling out a few extra dollars for a quality product. Ordered the M17x and was shipped a month and a half later, had to wait longer since some parts of the machine were out of stock. Finally received the machine and couldn't wait to use it.
A few negative things I noticed right away were that while the display is very nice there is a constant refection on the screen the Alien FX makes it worse. The speakers are not bad for a laptop but not impressive. The touchpad is not the best, if you use it frequently buy a portable mouse. Also it is a pretty heavy laptop, not portable at all. Mine has never left my place. A majority of games cannot be played on "High" graphics, I always have to turn them down to Medium or Low graphics. Not as powerful as I had thought.
THE GOOD: The positives were mainly the hardware, which is why you should be buying this device. The HDMI OUT is awesome since you can connect it to an LCD/LED television. Also the HDMI IN allows you to hook up a PS3 or Xbox360, have used both on the device and it plays well. The 1920x1080 screen is nice but the minimum I look at nowadays.
THE BAD: After using the laptop a few weeks, I noticed 10 dead pixels on the screen. Called Dell Support and this is when my experience went down hill. They would not even work with me at first since it had been more than 30 days since owning the laptop. I found the replacement screen policy for M17x screen online, the dead pixel issue appears to be somewhat common on this machine. In the policy my screen should be replaced. Called back and spoke to a "Dell resolution expert" manager for 30 minutes or more. I was told to provide some pictures of the dead pixels. I attached pictures of the areas where dead pixels appear on my laptop screen. There are multiple areas where bad or bad sub-pixels appear, I see bright and dark defects on my screen and some are single dead pixels while others are clusters. I even circled and commented where they appear in the photos. That was 3 months ago, no response from Dell, Alienware or the Resolution experts.
Calls and emails to Dell are not returned, it seems that they just want to ignore me. Unfortunately this has ruined my experience. This was a product I wanted and expected to keep for many years. The pixels are not noticeable all the time, but when I see them I feel sick that I paid so much for a defective product.
Go elsewhere if you want Service.
Pros:solid processor, multitasking is a breeze, alien fx, hdmi in & out
Cons:dead pixels, battery life, horrible customer service, not portable - heavy

Bad Buy.

No, I do not recommend this product.
Bought this Computer in 2011. I've had to replace the Graphics Card 5 times (6th starting today.) Reinstall the OS at least 6 times with support (Windows Errors) tons of blue screens, overheating issues (Still gets extremely hot with a cooling pad.) Terrible customer service support so far (Best they've been able to do is fix the computer piece by piece) When something broke under the complete care warranty I was charged money for it. I would not recommend an alienware, sadly I'm stuck with mine until someone decides to buy this horrible thing.
Pros:powerful
Cons:overheats, customer service, graphics card, warranty, support
Doesn't age well... Heat dissipation is a serious issue.

I purchased my unit in Sept. of 2011 and wrote a glowing review at that time. It bricked in Oct. of 2012. $250 for an open ended repair order resulted in the replacement of my video card (580M). Worked well from Nov' 12 until last night. Once again, bricked. Blue light in adapter ring extinguishes when it's plugged into the laptop. Internet search indicates that the Motherboard is now shot. Another $250.... Soooo, it looks like my annual "maintenance upkeep" costs for using this laptop will be at least $500/yr. Dell/Alienware has done nothing to address the obvious heat dissipation issues with this unit. Meanwhile, consumers will continue to throw cash at them to repair their multiple K$ until, I guess, we get tired of it and purchase a new NON-Alienware/Dell gaming laptop. Thanks Alienware/Dell
Pros:fantastic when it works, makes a pretty doorstop once you tire of repairs, you'll learn how to replace hi end components, i know alienware tech support number by memory
Cons:keeping it working is gonna cost ya..., the value of this unit is terrible, uber gaming rig that doesn't power up, heat dissipation engineering is a joke
I use this for gaming and for putting VM's on here for learning and honing my networking skills, I have ran 4 VM's at once and the only thing I see is the extra heat due to the fact that I am maxing out everything on this thing.
When I received my m17x, it had a problem. While plugged into the wall outlet, it kept switching to battery power, causing the screen to dim. I contacted support and they immediately diagnosed the problem, sending me a new battery and AC/DC adapter. Since then, the unit has been flawless. It's all that I asked for and more. I use it for gaming, streaming video, music, work, investment analysis, and more, and often use it for all of the above simultaneously, without a problem. The SSD is wonderfully quiet. The keyboard is very responsive. This is a great product. I'm very satisfied.
Pros:Gaming, streaming videos, investment analysis, music, work
Don't buy this laptop.I've got an alienware m17x and in less than a year I've had 4 motherboard , 1 graphic card, 1 pair of speakers and 1 set of alienfx LEDs changed by Dell's technicians because of hardware problems. Everytime I ask dell for a replacement laptop they'll denie the request and send me another motherboard replacement. I've already sent a complain to the consumer's office and still, DELL won't provide any Solution to the problem. I can't work/play like this!!! I've never been treated so poorly in my life!
I bought a M17X about a year ago. It was a great machine while it worked - of course 2 months after the warranty expired, the power cable broke, bricking my laptop for a week while I ordered another one ($100+). Worked for another week, and now the screen is dead. For a $3k laptop, I was hoping for better reliability.
This was a complete mistake to purchase an M17x R3 and have the 580M. When I first ordered this laptop I was so excited. After playing no games, getting a non repaired repair, struggling to get all my parts back from the repair, then having to call for a new issue and the old issue only to have the tech not want to deal with the old issue. Now not so much.
I have no use for this laptop and will probably have to sell it as parts on ebay just to get rid of it and recoup some of its costs.
I really wanted this laptop to work out that I resisted sending it back. I assumed it could just be fixed.
I had blue screens right out of the box. Fixed those. Then the throttling started. I tried everything to fix the throttling ended up sending it in for repair.
I received my laptop back with a new gpu and motherboard but missing parts. To get all my parts back from the repair I had to call customer service TWICE.
A week after getting my repaired laptop I could finally check the repair. Only to find the throttling still there and a new problem with the power adapter.
After spending a good hour and a half with a disinterested Tech, the power Adapter was fixed. I am unsure why all tests were done if it was a simple BIOS flash.
After the power adapter issue was fixed I tried to go into the throttling issue. He wanted no part of it. Said it was my game settings and said I would have to be transferred to Alienarena and they charge 100 dollars.
After seeing I was going no where I hung up.
Pros:listen to music?, type basic word documents, can't game on it, check email, i don't use it that much at all

Best Laptop I've Ever Bought!
PostedJuly 27, 2012
Yes, I would recommend this product
I recently purchased my Alienware M17x and so glad I did. I've had multiple gaming laptops and a desktop and my Alienware M17x puts them all to shame. I only upgraded the RAM to 16 and kept the stock processor and graphics card. It handles all the PC games I play at Ultimate settings and runs extremely smooth. Though this laptop is designed more for the males, having the optional back-lit colors helps cutomize it for females. This laptop is worth every cent I paid...and then some!
It's been almost a whole year and I'm still happy with the purchase of my laptop which finally costed me ~1700£ after customising.
I am considering buying another alienware laptop with better specs and whatnot in the next 6 months or so. Purely because I want a solid State Drive (SSD) which would really kick butt.
My ONLY annoyance is that these laptops only come with a glossy glass screen, which reflects light far too easily. Far too easily. A matt screen would have been perfect for gaming and graphic design. Especially when playing games that are dark and there are plenty of those. "Well you should just turn off the lights TROLOLOL" - can't turn off the sun, sweet cheeks.
I love my laptop but its a shame that the 580m gtx has throttle problems(78°C)! Apart from that its great. Its 10 month old and i've had mine repaired from dell 3 times and each time they do a good job!It arrived broken(dvd).2nd time(motherboard) .3rd time(heat sink recall).i would love for dell to change its warranty. if they have to come out to repair it then the start date of the warranty should start from when its fixed.I must say i would buy from dell agian no problem 10/10 for the service they offer is 2nd to none!! :D
Dell products have really taken a hit for the wors

No, I do not recommend this product.
We order the Alienware M17x R3, from Dell outlet. It was the worse Alienware we have ever delt ith. First the display really stunk, it was hard to see and it con flickered. The power of the system did not meet Alienware specs, It was horrible.
We own two Alienware M17x R2's and you cant not beat them. They really have held up to gaming/internet/movies/etc... And the display is great/crisp and the power of the M17x R2 is more than you will ever need, (However you will have to replace the WIFI card and the Hard drive, They ship the cheapest wifi card with this system and the worse HD, Why ship a gaming maching with a 250GB or 350GB HD with 5400RPM Come on DELL) Dell really has destroyed Alienware, But they did okay with the M17xR2 DO NOT buy the M17 R3 you will be sorry.

Great for gaming

Great fast computer for gaming. Great colors and videos
I bought the mx17 r3 two months ago, it stopped working after 4 days. someone came to change the memory at first but then he ended up changing the motherboard! Called technical support and told them I don't want the lap top it is like buying a refurbished one for the price of a new one. It has been more than a month since I asked them to come pick up the lap top and it still didn't happen. I've never experienced such a bad service in my life.
I was extremely excited about purchasing this laptop. I play moderate amount of Games through my laptops and I wanted to step up the experience by purchasing a laptop that would provide a richer and more vivide look. I did a bit of research and the Alienware Name kept popping up as a popular laptop with high performance. I thought why not and splurge a little and ordered the M17xr3. Currently, I am regretting my decision. Me and my wife has Dell issued work laptop and since we were satisfied with our work laptops. We decided to go with the same company for our personal ones. I order 2 laptops through Dell and this is when my issues began. My order was delayed 2 weeks, while my wife's arrived in 3 days. After a week of the initial order, I was informed via email that my order was delayed another 2 weeks. The laptop arrived a week ago, but within 3 days of use I started to have Blue Screen issues when shutting down. I called tech support to have them troubleshoot my problems. However I spent 2 hours on the phone dealing with my express service code, order number, service tag, and tracking number. Apparently, on Dell side my laptop was never shipped and they cant track my order. I was transferred to 4 different departments with the same issue. Even after all of this and providing all the information to 4 different reps I still have to wait 24-48 hours before they can help since I am in que to have my laptop registered in Dell's system. While waiting I am still experiencing my Blue Screen issue and sudden shutdowns due to "protecting my device." I have nothing loaded on the the laptop except for one Game and I have left it in stock condition. The only bright spot about my ordeal is when final rep I spoke with Syed took ownership of the issue and maintained a professional attitude even thouh I was highly agitated by the time she received me. I am extremely unhappy with the purchase, but I still hope that my issue will be fixed quickly. The irony is that I have read reviews before I purchase anything and I always wonder how those small majority of consumers who write bad reviews experience what they went through. Now, I know for the first time. I still cant believe I am writing a bad review about a product I had extreme high expectations.
The product looks amazing in Red, Keyboard lighting is great when playing at night. Definitely gotta have a solid state hard drive, loading speed for everything is greatly reduced.
It is very quiet,(thank god) I had an Asus G1s for awhile and that thing made so much noise not doing anything and sounded like a 757 taking off when it was doing something, I literally couldnt take it with me to the library.
However there are things that I didn't like when i got the product. The only thing wrong with the laptop is for some colors on alienfx I can't get the alien power button to match keyboard but thats not a big deal at all. The only real problem I have with the product is the charger. It is super big and heavy. Without wires attached to it it weighs a little over half my Asus G1s 15 inch laptop. The worst part about the charger is that most of the time it doesn't charge and causes computer to show an error message about using the wrong charger, I then realized that if you wait for a random amount of time it then starts to charge. Its like the adaptor is so big itself that it has to charge before it charges the laptop.
Pros:Gaming, music player, netflix/ movies/ tv series
