Title: Great!
Date: September 10, 2009
Review:It's been great so far. I love how it plays MKV files since I have many and also that it plays the subtitles in them. It's better than the PS3's video capabilities. The only problem is that it doesn't shut off the external hard drive even after ejection

Title: Best black box i've bought!
Date: May 28, 2009
Product Uses: Travel, Music & Movies, Presentation
Review:This little guy will change you're life. If you are "into" mp3s, mpegs, digital pictures, BUY THIS THING TODAY! I've got a 1TB harddrive hooked up to it USB (two available). The other end is hooked to my 42" LCD with HDMI (composite available). I now have instant access to ##,### mp3's, #,#### movies, and 30,000 photographs.
My brother and parents each bought one of these after i showed it to them. This thing plays all formats too, even ISO's. No more converting, its ready to go.
BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Title: Very good, but not perfect
Date: May 20, 2009
Product Uses: Music & Movies
Review:This little box is wonderfully simple and easy to work with. I did quite some research online before making the purchase decision. I am very impressed by its capability from such a small form. I did find it could not decoding properly some of my media files, including some old avi files and some recent MKV files. I am using the latest firmware, but am already waiting for the next update.

Title: Awesome Product
Date: April 15, 2009
ProsAnything I put on it plays, AVI, VOB, DivX, MPG, it's just great. The sound on the music that I play on it is excellent as well. I am so happy that I bought this item. Also, I can use my flash drive for quick throw ons. GREAT PRODUCT!!!! ConsRemote has no numbers to get to the movies by number faster. But other than that I got nothing.

Title: Nice Price - Some Features Lacking
Date: April 1, 2009
ProsEasy to put together and connect to either older tv model through the included component cables and even easier to connect the device to my Sony 60" 1080p and received nice clear images.
Also was pleased that the device played most of my MKV files as well as other files, though not all of them perfectly.
The other function that threw me for a curve was the ability to play image files. So far ISO, NRG, and IMG files do play, but there are limitations which I will list in the cons.
For the price, the unit is well worth the investment since if you're like me and place all of your multimedia on External/Portable drives you'll enjoy the fact that there are 2 usb ports.
Also a major plus, more about the passport, is that the passport does not require a power plug and instead uses this device's usb hub to power it.
The box also included a stand for use with WD Passport which I thought was a nice touch.
I also enjoyed how quickly a movie or file would start and then if I had to turn it off and come back to it again I was offered the option to continue where I left off. ConsIncluded PDF manual left so much important information out and seemed more of a sales pitch than an important tool.
I was completely turned off by the fact that while the unit will play image files, it will not play the image's menu file and instead direct plays the first VOB file that it recognizes as the main movie. This is a problem for people who enjoy watching an ISO that includes many movie, for instance (MST3K). In order to watch those movies past the first one I had to literally use the fast forward button on the included remote which took way too much time.
Also the remote is tiny and easy to misplace. Misplace the modem and you will not be able to play movies on this device. The remote includes very basic functionality. I would have liked the ability to skip the various chapters, but instead when I selected what seemed to be a chapter next button turned out to be the next file button. UGH!
Also, many MKV and AVI files played perfectly but without audio. The device seems very limited as to what kind of audio you can play. Some AVI files wouldn't play at all.
I attempted to use the included software ARC Mediaconverter 2.5 which really seems to be adware to get you to purchase version 3. 2.5 crashed each time I attempted to import a DVD.
Review:I hope that future models will incorporate the functionality of menu use with image files. Also it would be nice to be able to play DVD File Folders from the Hard Drive in the same manner as a DVD again with Menu Capability.
I agree with an earlier poster that having a selection of devices offering a range of included hard drives as well as wi-fi capabilities would be ideal.
Overall, you get what you pay for, and the price tag which was on sale, made up somewhat for the lack of functionality.

Title: Plays well with others...
Date: March 31, 2009
ProsEasy to set up, configure, and use. Was watching HD TV in less than 15 minutes... Best add on to my TV in years. ConsUnit does get warm when used. On 720/1080 resolutions you get occasional pixelation but it's not a deal-breaker.
Review:Unplug when not in use to keep from overheating.

Title: Small with a Big Ego! THE FUTURE is HERE!!!
Date: March 29, 2009
ProsAmazing compatibility with a wide array of video files including MKV. Plays ISO Files!! Easy navigation and playability is fast, almost zero wait times. Unbelievable device in such a small package. Supports 2 USB Drives at once. Did I mention it played ISO Files?
Setup was very easy and did not require connection with computer to update firmware.
Switched between subtitle, and audio options with great ease.
Exceptional video quality. Played 1080p files on my standard TV using the composite cords which were included.
I was pleased that the device relies on external portable/external hard drives to function since adding a hard drive component to this device would have definitely added a more imposing price tag. ConsDoes not play Video_TS folders as a DVD, instead you have to play each VOB file as an individual video file.
Device had difficulty with audio from some video files, mostly MKV.
Had to swim through the manual to find out how to update the firmware. Also the manual leaves out significant information on ISO playability.
Disappointed that this only supports USB. I hope future models include Firewire and eSATA support. The "Passport" portable drive is a nice item to have, however, placing a library takes tons of patience and time that could be spent watching those movies or shows.
No wireless and network support to make adding content easier.
Review:I was surprised that neither the manual or the box made any mention of ISO, NRG, or IMG playability which for me is significant since most of my library consists of backed up DVD's as image files. The fact that this device plays them instantly is a huge bonus! For such an unremarkable looking device, it is stocked with many relevant functions like playing 720p, and 1080p MKV files without hiccups whatsoever. There are some things that need to be worked out such as a wider range of audio support. Besides this, and a poorly put together manual, this device rocks! It's a must have for any Videophile.
Personally I feel that future models would benefit from supporting Firewire and eSata. Also I would include models with internal hard drives with different sizes to appeal to a wider audience.
I also feel that future models should support wireless and network capabilities allowing me to add files to the connected hard drives without having to unplug them, plug into my computer, add content, unplug and plug back into the device.
However, all in all, for the price this device exceeded my expectations.

Title: Good Product!
Date: March 26, 2009
ProsThis WD Media Player is really affordable (it was just $95 when I bought this). It is compatible with my LCD TV and produce excellent image quality. Also it can play a variety of different format of pictures, music and video. ConsNo HDMI cable is included. The image slideshow goes very slow and I cannot skip quickly. Also I don't like spend about a hundred more to buy an external drive

Title: Best C Note I Ever Spent
Date: March 2, 2009
ProsWill play just about any video files available for download online. Even plays raw VOB files. The 1080p output really makes everything sparkle. Family photos will jump off the screen. Reads and plays MP3s with the ID# tag information. Small and portable so you can take it, along with your movies, to your mother in laws if she only has basic cable. Elegant screen interface separates movies, photos and music contained on your hard drive and presents it on your TV screen. Cons5.1 Surround sound is iffy depending on how the original files were encoded. Also, I can't get 5.1 surround DTS music CD files to play properly.
Review:Western Digital has already provided one firmware upgrade and appears to be supporting the device nicely since it has become so successful.

Title: Great Little Box - GET IT, NOW (Trust me)
Date: March 2, 2009
ProsIts super small USB2.0 Flys (speed-wise) 2 - ports so you can have multiple hard drives hooked up Plays 1080p MKV's BEAUTIFULLY! ConsMust update Firmware INSTANTLY! (right when you buy it)
No DTS Decoder built-in (which means, you WILL need to hook this guy through optical for audio into a receiver of some sort to get sound on some HD movies that have DTS sound)
Review:Any bugs you may encounter will easily be fixed with a firmware upgrade
Don't believe people who shout love for the "popcorn hour" they're way overrated and more expensive.

Title: Great deal
Date: February 6, 2009
ProsIt plays everything you throw at it (that means it works as advertised), even ISO files. It's lightweight, small footprint, and has enough power to be able to use the USB powered drives. Two USB ports!
I like the idea of no hard drive in it. One less thing to break and lets me choose what I want to use. ConsNot all HD audio is supported, DVD menus are not supported. Those two items kept it from being a 5-star in my mind.
Review:WD has firmware upgrades, and hopefully the two CONS will be fixed someday.
