Software slow. And not as easy as suggested.
Does not always switch TV inputs.

Constantly back to the computer for tweaking.

Review:The light that comes on when you are in the area cannot be switched or programmed off. Real annoying if it is used in your bedroom. The lights are bright. I have had a URC for years and thought I would give Those units are reliable. Thought I would Logictech a shot. MISTAKE

Could not prove it but I think it was messing with my wireless router. That darn motion sensor.

Title: Logitech Harmony 550 Advanced Universal Remote Date: February 23, 2008
ProsI use this with a VIZIO GVL42 and Comcast HD box. Vizio's universal remote would not control Comcast box, and Comcast remote would not control Vizio - so this resolved the problem and allowed me to go from 2 remotes to one. Easily downloaded codes to remote via the internet, took about 10 minutes. This is an infra red remote so even when you hit the button and it misses the TV orcable box, you hit the help button and it resolves the problem by itself. This remote mimics the two combined remotes - all the way down to the sleep timer on my Vizio and the DVR on my cable box!!
ConsABSOLUTELY NONE!! For the convenience, and how much it does - definitely none!!

ProsLooks pretty.
ConsIf you are getting this to use with your media center computer, better hope you have your own ir sensor, cause this thing doesn't come with one. If you don't have one, don't even bother. This thing is useless to you. I found that out the hard way.

Pros- Sleek Look
- Simple and Streamlined Setup
- Easy to Use
- Good Battery Life
Cons- Slow Response
- Doesn't Always Switch to Correct Settings
- Questionable Software

Review:This remote is a pretty good deal overall. It offers a sleek look accented by a blue back light. It holds well with most buttons easy to reach. It takes standard batteries (have to go a step up to get the rechargeable battery), and I usually charge them once every two weeks. The setup is a piece of cake. Just plug it in with the USB cable and type your equipment into the software. It recognized all of my equipment (even ones that are a few years old), so I don't see that being a major issue. You can setup customized activity buttons to turn on certain equipment ("Watch TV" will turn on your television, receiver, and your cable box). I loved the software overall, but it has some questionable features. Why must the software startup with my computer? I only change my remote settings every 6-12 months (if that), so I don't really understand Logitech's reasoning) Performance wise, I have noticed that it doesn't always change to the proper input setting on my TV. It could be just a bad IR on my TV, but I haven't had the opportunity to test with another television. The remote can also be sluggish (but this too can be adjusted) with changing channels on my cable box.
Overall, I would recommend this remote if you can get it for under $80.

ProsThe button layout is decent but not great.
ConsThis remote is hard to program, slow to turn devices on, and won't control many options on standard equipment. Additionally, the larger buttons such as Guide and Menu have to be pressed in just the right spot or they won't work.

Review:Knowing what I now about this remote now, I wouldn't spend $10 on it

ProsGood overall remote, can do a lot for my system. Glow function is cool. When touching the remove after few hours the remote automatically flows, a very smart feature.
ConsLags time between functions, I have noticed that when trying to go back a chapter while watching DVD, it will not do that, since it is too slow for my Toshiba DVD.

Title: Harmony Remote Alternatives Date: March 23, 2007
ProsDefinately a good start. Features an ergonomic design and I like the fact that the whole thing is backlit.
ConsI thought the buttons were a little too small, and the layout wasn't very intuitive. Also, I thought the set-up process was a little confusing-- I had trouble using it with a Mac

Review:It's a good remote, the designers obviously put a lot of thought into this thing, but it's far from perfect. I just recently heard about another remote, similar to the Harmony from a company called X-10. It's called the icon remote (???) Anyway, it looks like it shares similar features with the Harmony, but it doesn't require a computer to get started. And since I can't, for the life of me, get the Harmony to work with my Mac, I'll be trading mine in for the icon remote.

Title: An excellent choice. Date: March 5, 2007
ProsWorks with anything that uses and IR remote - even my unusual pre-amp that no other remote I've found work operate.
Learns for remotes it doesn't know.
Easy initial set-up.
One click activities.
Ergonomic.
ConsMay require manual tweaking after set-up.
Manual tweaking can be time-consuming - change on the web site/software, then upload to the remote and then test.

Review:This is an excellent remote. Very easy to set up and use and it works with everything. I love the one click activities to set up for watching dvr or dvd or whatever you choose. I spent about 30 mins tweaking some of the functions manually after first set-up. While everything functions correctly, the remote thinks my TV has many more functions than it actually does - either the manufacturer reused a part number, or the remote database is a little off.

Overall a very good product, but may need an rather savvy user to get everything working perfectly.

Highly recommended.

ProsExtensive database of control codes for a wide variety of components. "Activities" make it easy to start up a complicated setup with one click -- easy for other family members to get a setup up and going. Works great with my MCE/HDTV/Cable/AVReceiver setup. Useful "help" button if programmed right. "Canned" setups are pretty complete for basic multi device configurations.
ConsSmall buttons are too close for my stubby fingers. Web-based software is absolutely horrible -- you've got to be online to do anything. If you lose your connection, you can lose your whole setup. Can't do "macros" for the individual devices.

Title: One remote ...amazing Date: January 8, 2007
ProsYou don't need like 4 remotes to control your entertainment center.
I've got my Xbox 360, Pioneer Reciever, Sony DVD player, Sony LCD all at one push of a button.
My wife can operate the entertainment system now ;)

Software is very simple to use. Program the remote and your done.
ConsHardly... you just need patience pointing the remote while all units turn on as it runs thru its sequence. If you loose line of sight you might miss a component.

Review:Dell had a great special on these. It's more than worth it.

Title: Ok, but not great. Date: January 8, 2007
ProsSimple to use menu system. Good quality / construction. Backlight is very usefull.
ConsMost actions are performed on a 'relative' basis - ie assume the TV / device is in a certain mode, on a certain input, etc. The remote then cycles through an action a specific number of times to get to where it thinks it should be. - The problem with this is, for example, if a device (eg TV) has Input 1 for DVD, Input 2 for Cable and Input 3 for Tuner, and you program the remote to watch Cable TV - it send's one 'change input' commands to the TV assuming you are already on Input 1. This is useless if you happen to have been using input 3 first as you end up with the TV on the wrong input.
When using the 'select device' feature, all buttons of the Hrmony map to that single chosen device - This is a pain as most typical Cable setup's require the channel to be changed using the Cable remote, but the volume, or aspect ration's etc to be controlled using the TV remote.

Review:Don't buy one of these expecting it to be a solution to a lost remote. - Despite the computer interface for simplified set-up, most configurations still require the origional remote control to correctly program/train the Harmony!

Backlight seems to have a mind of it's own and randomly switches on by itself even when not being handled!

ProsControls everything (I mean everything, from XBox360 to my mac mini). Sleak design, it learned pretty much all codes I threw at it. Very very customizable. The soft keys are an excellent addition once its trimmed down. So easy, a caveman could use it. Back light is motion sensitive, so it turns on when you pick it up!
ConsThe programming "software" is absolutely horrible. It's bad on Windows, and it is bad on OS X (but at least the released a mac version). If you like to control your devices with other methods (maybe even turning on the tv manually!) then it may give you a few problems as its chains remember "states" of devices, and if something is out of state it will act funny as it executes the chained commands.

Review:When configuring your devices (especially your tv) try out the PowerOn and PowerOff command, while your OEM remote more than likely only had a toggle many devices actually have a specific IR code for PowerOn and PowerOff which will come in handy as your design your activities. Overall, an excellent remote.
