Title: Solid laptop, but keyboard drives me insane
Date: November 12, 2009
Product Uses: entertainmment, web browsing
Review:For an entry level machine, it performs well. I can even play a few graphic intensive games at lower detail settings, which is amazing. It is not, however, a substitute for a desktop in either gaming or day to day use. There is a slight delay in screens refreshing and such.
It is solidly built, much better than the HP laptop I had before, which was a joke. However, the Inspiron shares an annoying feature of the HP. There is some function which causes it to go haywire if one accidentally hits the wrong key when touch typing. I cannot figure out what I am hitting, but it will close browers, open up new ones, erase whole pages of text, etc. I will have to break open the manual and see how to stop this. It is easy to have happen on the smaller keyboard of a laptop.
I was concerned about windows Vista but am happy that it seems stable, easy to use, and actually is an improvement in many ways over XP for me. It may slow the system down some, but it's hard to say for sure.
My wife works in the corporate world and they have always used Dells. She's had several over the years and they have always been solid, durable, and reliable. So I am glad I went Dell. I just wish that keyboard wasn't so feature laden that it causes me to lose my work from time to time. But for a laptop I just use when sitting around watching TV or something, it's fine for the price. Much more versatile and easy to use than a netbook, which we also own, btw.

Title: It's a hit!
Date: November 11, 2009
Product Uses: photos and memory books, myspace, recipe collection!, emails, internet research, internet web sites
Review:I've wanted a laptop computer for some time and the Inspirion I bought is absolutely great! It's faster than my work computer and does everything I need it to do. My daughter would be lost without it and uses it to keep in touch with friends. It's a toss-up who in my house likes it the most. It's so reliable, we haven't had any need to check out the Dell support yet!

Title: Keyboard ergonomics need attention
Date: November 10, 2009
Review:I like the machine overall, at least so far, but the keyboard needs to be redesigned.
The engineers have put a variety of hardware controls on the top row of keys... where the Function keys (F1, F2, etc) would normally be, there are now keys for monitor toggle, wireless on/off, screen brightness, audio level, beginning/end, etc.
The Function keys are now accessed by a combination of a Fn key and the F1 key on the top row.
Putting the hardware control on the top row makes it very easy to turn the wireless function off.... Miss the "2" key and your internet connection is disconnected!
Guys, this really stinks. Put the Function keys back where they belong. Put the hardware controls back below them, as a Fn-key combination.
By the way, my model is an Inspiron 1545, not a 1525. But there was not a selection for the 1545 in your drop down box.

Title: Dell provides choice and excellence
Date: November 3, 2009
Product Uses: college online courses, multimedia, college papers
Review:I buy from Dell because they are one of the few (maybe only) seller of low end computers with OS choice (installing a non-Windows OS on HP/Compaq, for instance, voids your hardware warranty - go figure). Our Inspiron 1525 came pre-installed with Ubuntu 8.04. We normally run Fedora, but the pre-install worked so well, we kept it (and now I have a little experience with Ubuntu). This laptop was for my Daughter's high school graduation present, and she has had no problems with it.
The CPU fan started rattling a few weeks ago (annoying, but also warning of immanent failure). So we called Dell, and they had us ship it back for replacement. I was very, very impressed with the mail-in repair process. They shipped us a very easy to use box with complete instructions. Dell understands that you may not wish to ship your hard drive for a hardware problem elsewhere (because of sensitive information, and because they might need to "re-image" it), and the instructions acknowledge this. The packing instructions, return shipping label, brown tape for sealing the package, were superbly designed. (Unfortunately, the FedEx office immediately covered the elegant packaging with sticky clear tape despite my protests. Whoever has to open the box at the repair depo, please don't blame me!)
The technical support person was also knowledgeable, and not at all one of those annoying and ignorant help desk types.
My only gripe is that fans should be field replaceable, and not integrated with the heat sink!

Title: Nice computer for the money
Date: October 22, 2009
Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, Finances, work
Review:Redid my computer so that it has XP instead of Vista. Much better. So far laptop works great. Love having wireless. Now I can work from anywhere in my house.
I would definitely recommend this to someone else. Good buy for the money.
The only con is that it's always got finger prints all over it. Because of the shiny exterior, I find that I'm always polishing it so that it looks clean.

Title: 1545 Inspiron-Great for Basic Use
Date: October 14, 2009
Review:We also own a Studio 17" laptop with alot of extras. This Inspiron is just for e-mail and on-line shopping:), however, I do notice that it is slower and there are "Security" problems that we are trying to figure out so I can view my on-line banking "e-statements". So far, between the bank, myself and my sons' large university we are not able to figure out how to view these statements because of something in the security system. Hopefully, soon this won't be an issue. Otherwise, its' a nice-size (15") to handle and is lightweight and great for basic computer use and simple games & photos. We do love dell products, it's just trying to figure out everything when you first get your laptop. I'll have to call technical support on this.

Title: My new Inspiron
Date: October 7, 2009
Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, Finances, shopping
Review:After 6 years I had to replace my Inspiron 5150. Friends and family tried to get me to try a different brand but I'm glad I didn't listen. Very happy with the quality and looks of my new Inspiron and especially the price. Received my new custom built Inspiron in less than 10 days after ordering which I thought was very fast. Spent the extra money and got Windows XP which I would recommend.

Title: Love It!

Review:I love my new laptop. I have had Dell products for many years, but this is my first laptop. It came in a very timely manner and when I had trouble setting up the Wireless connection (the CD wouldn't work), I was able to get excellent service from Dell Support. It is so nice to be able to take my laptop from room to room, plus my daughter was so happy to be able to put her Sims 2 game on it! I can now still use the desktop while she occupies my new laptop!
I have already recommended this laptop to a friends daughter who is now in college.

Title: Nice laptop
Date: September 25, 2009
Product Uses: business photoshop searches
Review:I am very impressed with the Inspiron. A few annoyances are that the screen is too reflective and difficult to see in bright sun-lit settings. I am not very happy with all the share-ware and pre-loaded features, some of which I do not care to run that start automatically. They take some navigating to remove.
On the positive side of this is that in contacting Dell support, they were very helpful in getting the most annoying auto-start programs to go aaway. I suggest using the computer for at least a few days, make a list of what is starting that you don't want and going to support for help in re-configuring to your desire.
Over all a great display (out of bright lighted areas), fast and crazy nice hardware.

Title: I like it.

Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, i use it a lot for pictures, i record my medical history, i make all my greeting cards, i use it for many things
Review:I was afraid of what I've heard about Vista, but it seems ok. I have been promised that I could download Windows 7 as soon as it is available, that is why I went ahead and bought this Dell.
The black keys make it hard to see. It would be nice if there were a back light of some kind so I could see the keys better.
I am using Gmail.com and find it takes longer to send an email. Why is that happening?
Otherwise, I like the computer just fine.

Title: Not pleased
Date: September 13, 2009
Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, school work, shopping
Review:I ordered the Dell Inspiron 1545 with high expectations. I had only heard good things about Dell computers but much to my dismay I have found that this laptop is not nearly as nice as I had anticipated. I have daily problems with the internet, certain buttons on my desktop do not even work when I click on them, and I find my internet seems to be moving slower and slower the more I use my computer. Seeing as I will be using my computer for big assignments for my college courses, it is very discouraging to know that the process will not be problem-free because I have already had issues. I wish I could recommend this laptop to friends but I believe they are better off getting a different one simply because of the problems I have so soon already encountered. And I have only had my latop for less than 1 month. Perhaps my laptop has some fluke issues or is a "lemon" of the sorts but it's rather disappointing regardless.

Title: Not thrilled with the shine.
Date: September 2, 2009
Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, work and study
Review:I bought my inspiron because I have been using a Dell laptop for a few years at work and loved it. I am not quite as thrilled with my new one. First off the gloss finish that was suggested to be an aid in viewing the screen is really just on the lower surface and reflects light as well as feels sticky. The mouse is as mentioned by others very sensitive and shifts locations a bit too easily. The Vista is fine and I have no other problems except I can't get my wireless connected and after downloading a windows update it began crashing frequently. Now that I have removed that update it is working better. The other surprise is that the screen is actually recatngaulr not square and that make all the print previews seem distorted.

Title: motherboard
Date: September 1, 2009
Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, Finances, graduate school
Review:To complete graduate school I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1225 Laptop 15 months ago. This computer operated very well and without it I would not have been able to receive my Master’s Degree. My thesis and all of my courses are on the notebook.
After completing my graduate work I began to use the computer for various other duties associated with my job at Johnson Matthey, a precious metals facility located in West Chester, Pa. At Johnson Matthey we all are given access to our own Dell PCs; the building has approximately 250 units that are replaced nearly on an annual basis. We are all happy with our Dell systems.
However, after completing my studies I proceeded to use my notebook and discovered that it simply would not operate. Contact with a Dell representative revealed that I was 3 months past my warranty. I took my notebook to an outside contractor recommended by employees in my IT department at work and it was discovered through a diagnostic check that my motherboard had “crashed” and was no longer workable. The approximate price for a new mother board, according to this contractor was approximately $285.00. Although I am on a fixed income I was able to pay for my laptop, plus added software; price of about $800.00. However, although I feel that Dell products are excellent, I have a Dell PC at home, I feel this motherboard must have been defective when I made my purchase. I simply cannot justify spending 285.00 on a new board nor do I have the money to make this purchase.
What I request I know would be perhaps unprecedented on your part, but I feel I purchased a defective item with limited income and would appreciate you considering replacing it. Like I mentioned before, we here at Johnson Matthey do a lot of business with Dell computers and a new motherboard would be a “drop in the bucket” compared to the business we send your way. I have always enjoyed using your product.
Please consider my request and/or direct me to an individual who can help me alleviate this problem.
