Title: Good desktop replacement Date: August 14, 2008
ProsIntegrated numeric keypad. (That's the main reason I bought this model.) Large screen. Good performance w/XP Pro. No problems in networking it.
ConsNo docking station available, just port replicators. Size - will not fit in most 17" laptop cases. Weight - this thing is heavy, but it's fine if you intend you use it the way it's intended to be used. If you really need to be mobile or if you travel by air, this is NOT the machine for you.

Review:Pay attention to the dimensions of this machine. I didn't like Dell's cases, so I had a heckuva time finding one that fit - it's just a tiny bit too big to fit in most 17" cases. Finally found a Brookstone and a Tumi that work, so there are at least two more options out there that will fit - neither are inexpensive, though.

To me, not having a docking station is a pretty big oversight considering this is a portable desktop. I hate the port replicators, but they're better than nothing.

Title: GREAT Machine Date: June 30, 2008
ProsI LOVE the 17" screen and size of the keyboard with the numeric keypad! The speed is GREAT, the video is good...I run a lot of applications, some of which are memory hogs, I've never had a problem...I have put a lot of extras on my system and I've had it for about 6 months now. It's a GREAT machine!
ConsWEIGHT! I knew what I was getting when I got it...I can't gripe about weight too much...I wanted a portable desktop.
The machine is plastic...not a problem, I have cracked the battery however, not bad, and it's still usable and you don't notice unless you're looking for it.

Review:Just make sure you get what you want, you can't gripe about performance if you don't get what you need to do the job that you need to do.

Title: vostro 1700 Date: June 13, 2008
Prosgood value
Consfirst... the keyboard is too hard... on the ins.p.r.on the keys are slick and too hard... on the v.s.t.r.o the keys are not so slick .. but still too hard to push down.
second....the resolution is crop for a 17" screen 1400x900
third.... don't count on using the v.g.a out.... because the picture quality is severely degraded
fourth.... way too heavy....
... my main gripe is the video.... you can see more on a higher res 15 inch screen
... my old dell c610 latitude will export the v.g.a at the same quality as is on the laptop ... but when you pipe out v.g.a on the v.o.s.t.r.o... you just get crop
.... dell c610 has 16mb video card and the v.g.a out is better than on this 128mb v.o.s.t.r.o v.g.a out
.... not to mention on my c610... you can increase the resolution much higher than the v.o.s.t.r.o is limited to

Review:... i would say ... that if you are going to carry this clunker around.... you are much better off going for the higher res screen.....
..... but you don't need the dedicated video card.......
.... an integrated video card is just fine.....
.... the main thing is the resolution.....
... or buy a laptop which has a better video card which provides higher resolution

Title: Excellent Product for field work Date: May 21, 2008
ProsThe magnesium alloy case takes bumps and the ocassional drop without much more than a small scratch when compared to most other laptops as they come with a light weight plastic shell that have been known to shatter on impact. The 1700 has the number pad which makes it real easy to forget it's a laptop and repetative numeric entries can be done one handled like a 10 key calculator. The large display reduces the need to run visual aides like a screen magnifier. You get a decent choice of processing speeds, memory options, hard drive sizes, operating systems, and other features to make your system rival most any desktop model you can carry with you.
ConsI really haven't found any Cons with the system other than of course when considering it's size comes some additional weight when compared to other machines, plus the magnesium alloy case adds weight when compared to most other laptops that are plastic. Battery life could possibly be slightly better when using Vista, but that really isn't Dells fault as Microsoft clearly states that Vista has more built in features that take additional power considerations over Windows XP. Perhaps down the road Dell might consider offering a 12 cell battery to help offset this.

Review:I would recommend purchasing one of Dell's offered bags when you purchase a 1700 series as finding a bag on the open market that fits a 17 inch screen is nigh impossible. I also strongly recommend to all my friends and clients upgrading your warranty to include accidental damage protection for the same duration of the warranty period you have selected, it has already paid off for me.

Title: Good value for general users Date: May 13, 2008
ProsThe laptop runs very quietly and rarely gets hot which is an achievement given the powerful spec. The keyboard, numeric pad and mouse pad are all excellent.
The MediaDirect software is a great addition as this is not primarily a media focused laptop.
ConsI had some issues upgrading from the 32bit version of Vista Home Premium it came installed with to 64bit Vista Ultimate. In particular, getting hold of the correct drivers for the hard drives was a painful experience that could have been avoided if the DELL support site had listed all the 64bit options for the model, not just the 32bit options.
Once installed with 64bit Vista Ultimate I have regularly experienced the laptop not responding to ANY input following boot up. I literally have to power the laptop off and reboot which has so far remedied the issue every time. I am exploring the possibility that it may be an issue with my antivirus (AVG 7.5) rather than the Vostro so will not say anymore at this point...
I found that installing MediaDirect on a clean install is far from straight forward and involved reinstalling the operating system because it should have been done in advance (not made obvious anywhere before I started).
Minor things; I find the positioning of the 'media' buttons (volume, play/pause, forwards, back, etc) on the front of the laptop (just behind where I rest my hands) can be irritating. The speakers distort badly when watching DVDs at anything over half volume although I accept this is not a media focused laptop.

Review:I spent a long time comparing DELLs (and in particular the Vostro) to all the main competitors - Sony Vaios, HPs, Toshibas and especially the Mac Book Pro. Nothing else came close to the Vostro - most of the others could not be spec'd exactly to my requirements and the closest like for like for all the others was more expensive (the Mac was OVER £1k more!!!!)

Title: Poor USB Port Location Date: May 2, 2008
ProsLove the numeric key pad and size of the screen.
ConsThe location of the USB ports is awful. There are none placed close to the front of the machine. Those on the side are all the way to the back. When you put flash drive in and out, you often "jar" the ethernet cable loose - it is just too close to the USB ports.

Review:I purchased some accessories after receiving the computer. Through all the Dell customer contract was great, except that I would sold a port replicator that the video did not match the computer's. The return was simple.

Title: Excellent Laptop Date: April 30, 2008
ProsThe 17" screen and full size keyboard are great. The battery life is very good. The finish on the laptop resists fingerprinting. The machine performs fast. The onboard speakers are pretty good. The DVD player works great and so does the built in G wireless. Very easy to connect. Also, nice touch pad. I usually hate these things!
ConsI don't like installed software that dings you to buy a subscription as in the antivirus that was installed! I took it off and installed my own.
It's a little heavy, but I bought this for my son so he can carry it OK. If I traveled a lot I would probably go with the smaller screen version.

Review:Possible lighter weight materials if possible. Great all around system. I am considering another one for these for my daughter. She needs the exercise!! Can't do facebook on a little screen!

Title: Portable desktop, Great for the money ! Date: April 29, 2008
ProsThe price is awesome, great buy, best for the money. I like the 17" screen, not too "hot" about the resolution maybe i need it to upgrade the video card. I like the black finish, the big key board is nice, it feels like a desktop but is portable. Great for video, and Power Point Presentations and editing.
ConsThe weight is little on the heavy side, A more metallic/ aluminum look in the inside will look much better. I would like covers for the multiples port inlets on the side and back. The opening hatch look weak and cheap.

Review:I own my Vostro 1700 for over two months. NO problems, very quiet. It gets a little warm under but is not bad at all. Do not forget get a bluetooth mouse, and wireless internet access. Will make the laptop experience great, I wish Dell will place two tabs on the back like the ones on the keyboards to lift the back of the laptop.

Title: Vostro 1700 Date: April 29, 2008
ProsThe price/value is great. This was an inexpensive model and has more than enough capabilities for what we need for our home business. The screen looks great when you're sitting in front of it. From an angle, it fades a little. It was an extremely easy setup - plug it in and we were ready to go.
ConsThe case seems to be a cheap plastic. Although we've had no problems yet, I would think that it we travelled with it there might be issues as the case (plastic components) seems like it wouldn't be as durable.

Review:Overall, a really nice computer that we would definitely recommend for the home-office or personal user. I might not recommend it for someone who travels a lot where it might get banged around.

Pros- Spacious screen
- Full key board with number pad, which is great for a person who works with numbers all day
- Very sturdy design, durable
- Windows XP, glad they have the option of running XP on this model
Cons- Heavy, which is expected for a 17' laptop

Review:I bought two Vostro 1700 for me and my wife's Uniform Evaluation Exam for Chartered Accountants. We were specifically looking for a laptop with 17' screen and a keyboard with number pad. Dell Vostro was our natural choice: affordable, great price/performance ratio, durable design. Hopefully this pappi can bring us success at UFE.

Pros- order shipped promptly and correctly
- laptop appears well made and rugged
- able to select Windows XP (main reason I purchased this laptop)
- reasonable performance and quiet operation
- 5 USB ports very handy
Cons- shiny style display glares easily with lots of reflections
- media buttons on front edge easily hit by mistake (would be better above keyboard)
- no sound from speakers when using external line input (makes it difficult to record vinyl LPs -- need to monitor signal while recording)

Review:- large, wide-aspect display is very useful
- numeric keypad is useful for data entry
- touchpad gets unwanted, erroneous input while typing -- connected external wireless mouse and disabled touchpad -- now works great

ProsI also was afraid to switch to Vista, after using it for a month or so I am very happy. I think the previous problems have been worked out. I actualy like it better than XP now. This is a great desk top replacement, a real time saver.
ConsRuns a little differently than I am used to, but easy to retrain and get used to using. Not as flashy colors etc. as other laptops, but these are not needed for buisiness anyway.

ProsThe high-res WUXGA display is extremely sharp and allows viewing two full side-by-side pages of text. When I bought this laptop, there was nothing else available with such a great display for the price. There are plenty of USB ports, an SD card reader, and a 1394 port for good connectivity with all other devices. The machine is very quiet, and battery life is over 3 hours.
ConsI would prefer an audio volume knob instead of the control buttons on the front of the machine.
The Dell "Home" quick-access feature is pretty useless because it takes nearly as long as Vista to boot.

Review:When considering the ability to customize the machine, and Dell's on-site warranty service, there really isn't any other laptop that offers nearly the same value.

Pros[T7500, 2.5GB RAM, 8600M GT ]
Webcamera software is very fun. Has many features such as motion detection, time lapse, and web monitoring. The camera also has face detection and can auto adjust for different lighting conditions. This machine is build solid. It has a very hard casing and sturdy latch for opening the unit. The unit arrive very clean. There was not alot of additional software loaded on the system. I was able to start setting up the machine without reinstalling windows. This machine runs reletively cool compared to my turion 64 15in laptop.
This machine performs very well using desktop applications. This unit can play music/videos while dowloading files ,surfing the web, unzipping a file, and copying to a network share with no problems.
I also am able to play games such has Half-Life, 2 Oblivion, and C&C 3 with no problem.
ConsThe machine is build sturdy but it is very heavy. Not for the road warrior.
I would have liked the VGA connector to be on the back. It is a little akward on the right side. USB ports in the back would have been nice also.
The extended battery sticks out about 1.5 inches from the back of the unit. Not so bad if used has a desktop replacement.
DVD Rom drive can be very noisy. Its quite anoying when watching DVD Movies.
Tried to put 4GB of Memory in this unit as it was its advertised limit , but the unit would not post. Take note, I only tried one brand of memory.

Review:The Intel Wireless N picks up a very good signal.
Unit has space for 2 sata drives.

Title: Best Laptop I've Used Date: April 17, 2008
ProsThe !7'' screen is really nice. The fans don't make much noise at all. Works great with only 2Gb of ram, The keyboard makes no noise when typing. the standard WIFI chip works great compared to other wireless cards I've used. The intergrated graphics card works better than expected, but I can't help but wonder if the advanced graphics would be sharper. The full keyboard is great. The built in speakers get very load, expecially considering how small they our (compared to latitude speakers). Has a built in SD card reader (something I haven't had on a laptop before).
ConsThe touchpad is rather small compared to the size of the entire computer, and it's off to the left, but I usually use a wireless mouse, which I recommend. The standard speakers sound distorted if turned more than half of the way up, but considering how loud they are I usually don't do this anyways. Fingerprints show pretty bad on the back, but no where else.

Review:Many people have said that the bottom of the computer gets fairly hot, but compared to the Latitudes I've used, this thing doesn't even get warm. I can leave it on all day and it stays cool. The Latitudes get to over a hundred degrees in an hour.
Most of the expansion ports are on the side (which can be a good or bad thing, depends on preference).

Title: Good Replacement for Home PC Date: April 16, 2008
ProsThe performance is excellent with no hiccups. Battery life is excellent, I have kept the brightness a to bit on the dim side. The attached web cam is also good, very clear. Nice to use as TV and watch TV/ Movie across the room. Sound quality is good.
ConsComes with lot of preloaded stuff which you need to disable. Looks also is not very attractive considering it is a Home PC replacement, should have some decorative value :-)

Review:Got this Laptop with top of the line features to avail $500 discount for a purchase over $1250. Its a good value for money deal.
