Title: Excellent Gaming Laptop & A Worthy Successor
Posted18 December 2016
Yes, I would recommend this product
Bought this laptop with the sole intention of replacing my ageing M17X R4, and I have to say, its a VERY WORTHY successor. My configuration is as below:
CPU: Core i7 6820 HK
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 1070 GTX
RAM: 16 GB 2400 MhZ
HDD: 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD
Screen: 4K UHD IPS Display
Warranty: 04 year Premium Warranty + 04 year Accidental Damage Protection
Bonus Extras (received without paying on account of service recovery from Dell's end, which was MUCH appreciated): 36-month McAfee subscription + Adobe Elements
I've been using the laptop for the past couple of days, putting it through its pace (especially for gaming). My verdict? This is a BEAST of a laptop that looks and feels as good as it delivers in software. The build is FANTASTIC! Really rugged, metallic, yet smooth to the touch. I actually like the little "booty" like exhaust the laptop has; for one it ensures that the laptop remains COOL to the touch (even when gaming at 4k ultra on demanding AA titles). And second, it makes the laptop look very unique (which is ALWAYS a plus :)) I especially like the angle the screen is attached to the body of the laptop. The Alienware lighting is great as always as well :)!
The screen is GORGEOUS! I can quite easily say that with the 4K resolution, movies, videos and pictures look just as great on my laptop as they do on my Surface Pro 4. Maybe even better, as the screen has an excellent non-reflective matt finish that even on sunny autumn days doesn't need brightness set to greater than 50% (and that's saying something)!
The cooling has been top notch, and I comfortably play games on 4K ultra (Dragon Age Inquisition, Skyrim SE with mods, Homeworld Remastered etc.) and/or 1080p ultra (Doom, Witcher 3, etc.) with CPU temps reaching a "max" of around 71 degrees (average of around 53-58 celcius), and GPU temps at around 61 degrees “max” (average around 56 celcius)! All this while running games on FPS easily above 60 fps (or between 30 - 60 fps @ 4k ultra with AA). I cannot even begin to describe what a treat this laptop has been for a gamer like me :). As my laptop allows for dynamic overclocking of the CPU, I was pleasantly surprised to also see the GPU overclock as well (at least when I recorded data on GPU-Z) from 1650 to 1860 Mhz on core clock speed ! For those who like benchmarks, 3dMark 11 results for my laptop were around 16800 points for the performance test, and 23000 points for the GPU score.
Tobii Eye tracking deserves some much needed TLC, as it does a great job of recognizing when I'm not looking at my laptop screen (even if I'm sitting not 12 inches from it). This allows it to effectively turn of my screen immediately when not in use (or at least dim it within 10 seconds of my departure), turn of the LED lights (which is also really smart), which leads to my next point- battery life.
They weren't kidding when they said that battery life "could" be up to 7 hrs. Since I have the option to turn on Optimus (when plugged, I usually have my laptop on discreet GPU enabled always), I've calculated almost 5.5 hrs of battery life when my laptop screen is set at 50%-75%, and I'm doing multiple things, including web browsing, streaming at 1080p and downloading simultaneously. All in 4K glory (mind you).
The laptop has, so far, been very stable, with no shut-downs or issues whatsoever (touch wood). While I did get my laptop with a little screen light-bleeding at the bottom right corner and middle right corner, its honestly not all that noticeable, and doesn't make this laptop any less than it could be. However, as I do travel a lot, I did make it a point to purchase the 4 year warranty + 04 years accidental damage coverage (which covers for repairs when working/living in countries other than the US).
To conclude, I wholeheartedly recommend this laptop, and I look forward to playing on it for the next 04 years :).
P.S : GET THE NEW ALIENWARE BAG for this laptop

Title: Nice PC
Posted04 December 2016
It's a great laptop for gaming while you're traveling. Typically I use a desktop when I'm not traveling, but sometimes it's nice to have a laptop so you can chill in bed and do your gaming. Handles my games on highest settings comfortably. Also love that I can make my keys light up multiple colors and have it set so they change color schemes. Temperature control is great as long as you keep the vent's clear so air can get in. Only real downsides I've noticed so far are two things. 1) The size of the laptop is bigger than most, went to best buy and the largest laptop carrier they had for a 17.3 inch system wasn't big enough. So you'll have to go get a laptop carrier online. 2) Not that much room to install games and keep files. I downloaded SWTOR and League of Legends, I tried to install WoW next to see how many games I could fit on here. There wasn't enough room to install WoW as well. Over all excellent system. I'll admit that I was skeptical because the laptop doesn't come with a CDROM drive, most computers do. But where the CDROM drive typically is, they put the PC speakers. The quality of sound as well as how loud it gets is definitely superiour to all other laptops I've ever had. The laptop is a balanced computer, which is what I found to be with an Alienware deskop. It's built to handle gaming for extended periods of time and streaming Hulu is amazing on both my desktop and this laptop. If you have the money, I'd definitely recommend getting this laptop, it should last you a good while. As far as the CDROM drive goes, you can get a better CD drive on your own that you can plug in with a USB cord than what you would normally get with a computer for a better price.

Title: Awesome machine!

Yes, I would recommend this product
Having never heard of Alienware I was a little skeptical but the set up process was amazing, the security is superb, and the overall performance so far has been fabulous. Not just for gaming, but regular bornig 9-5 work too.

Title: Amazing laptop but...

Yes, I would recommend this product
The laptop is outstanding, and runs my games wonderfully. My 1 and only reoccuring problem with the 17 R4 is it constantly drops from the internet. I've checked my other devices and this is the only one that does it.

Title: Just Awesome
Posted25 March 2017
Yes, I would recommend this product
I got my R4 with the GTX 1080 several days ago and I am highly impressed, the 1440 G Synk screen is gourgeous and all my games run smooth on Ultra settings.
The Toby Eye tracking may be a gimick to some people but I find it usefull to have the screen and lights dim when I step away and to sign in with facial recognition is nice as well.
Its a solid built machine that performs as well as it feels and is worth the price paid. I highly recomend it.
FYI be aware of only 2 USB 3 ports, buy Thunderbolt and USB C adaptors with the machine to add more USB 3 devices.

Title: A good choice but...
Posted25 March 2017
No, I do not recommend this product.
I did a lot of research before ending up in the Alienware product. I was searching for a 4k screen and this is an expensive choice for the time being. The performance of the Alienware 17 R4 is overall really good but I was disaponted by the Backlight bleeding which most commonly occurs when this light is not 100% blocked, allowing excess light to "bleed" around the edges of the 4k panel. This backlight bleeding issue leaves spots of lighter areas on a dark or black background. This was really disapointing especially when considering the very high price of the model. I was totally taken by surprise that in such an expensive appliance I am experiencing backlight bleeding. In addition the system scans I have done for checking up the appliance have never finished properly since errors appear. In any case my feelings are mixed for this purchase and I am disapointed a bit as I was expecting more from Alienware.
