Spent 10 hours installing our software on this unit prior to our field season. Bench test was fantastic...in the field it was not. Operated in a drizzle for two hours, wiped it down and air dried it for 6 hours before closing it up for my flight home. Upon start up this week the keyboard and mouse were totally fried. The keyboard keys also now have a dimpled texture. This is definately not as advertised. I hope my data is fine....I haven't been able to access it as of yet. Dell definately needs to answer a few questions and rectify an even larger number of problems.

Ok, im going to be as clear as possable. This laptop is freaking sweet! i switched from the panasonic toughbook CF-18, and i have owned several other models and this one blows it out the water! Someone commented about the weather seal and there wrong because the material used creates a air tight seal unlike the dry hard rubber used by panasonic, also the internal seals like the one on the bottom lid when removed is really high quality. the seals are quite flexable and do not wear esaly. also the port covers are great, they latch and lock which means if u drop it theres no chance of it poping open. i have already gotten it pretty wet and durty and have had no problems. Not really mentioned in the specs is the fact that dit has some very advanced integrated security like the intel anti-theft but also it has a utility that recures a smart card or fingerprint pre-boot right out of the bios! touchscreen is great and can be configured to beep on contact and the frequency and duration of the sound is fully customizable! Also to address the SD card issue saying that its impossable to use is incorrect, all u have to do is pull on the rubber handle slightly to insert the SD card.
PROs Everything! Touchscreen Keyboard is easy to type on and quiet all customizable even the backlit keyboard port covers and weather seal Biometrics rugged volume buttons big easy soft mouse buttons 2 smart card readers! rubber handle is very nice very rugged yet stylish active and passive cooling sealed thermal chamber with big fan THREE PCI-E SLOTS, GPS, WAN, PAN EVEN PCIE SSD VGA and HDMI! Stealth mode legacy serial IO exceeds IP-65, MIl-850G 20 HOUR BATTERY LIFE WITH BATTERY SLICE Very advanced Bios nice interface OH YEA ITS 3D CAPABLE TOO!!!!!
CONs No USB 3.0 :( only via E-modular bay Audio jack does not have individual cover Only one sata slot, 2nd HDD only via Emod. bay Upgrad parts hard to find no touchpad lighting no port Lighting
Pros:combat, it support, work, skype

E6420 XFR is awesome!
PostedDecember 14, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
I was debating between the E6420XFR and a Panasonic Toughbook. In the end the XFR won out for a number of reasons: I7 processor, wide screen and faster graphics. I had reservations about using a laptop for web casting live video but this unit has plenty of power! This is my fourth laptop (2 toughbooks & a dell xps 1330) and I'm totally confident I made the right choice. To the last poster, I've always (99%) had excellent service from Dell.
A few more pros: backlit keyboard awesome daylight viewable screen quick boot up and shut down (under 30 seconds) rock solid feel and construction good speakers/sound for a rugged laptop
cons: sd card slot placement is ridiculous gasket material for sealing ports looks weak compared to a toughbook. screen dimming could use a little wider range of adjustment at the low end.
Lastly, I thought the handle might be a pain but it's not.
This laptop rocks!!!!
Pros:everything!

NOT rugged and TERRIBLE service
PostedOctober 18, 2011
No, I do not recommend this product.
I received my new "rugged" laptop and owned it for a week before it crashed dead! Never got off my dining room table let alone into my work environment. Have been trying to get repairs for 5 days now but parts are not available even though 3 different service reps ASSURED me a service call was on its way. So far I have lost 5 days work waiting. So much for next day service warranty and service. I would not recommend this product nor Dell.
Pros:business, Travel
