I purchased my E6220 with 256Gb SSD, Core i7 and 8Gb RAM. This little laptop is very fast for all regular office productivity apps. I usually have many applications, browser tabs and documents open at once, and so far no slowdown effect has been noticeable. It is super fast to boot and resume from sleep or hibernation. The only issues I've encountered have been due to running Win7 64-bit which would be the same on any hardware.
Very light, very fast and very nice quality. A real winner in my book and a big improvement over my previous laptop which was more than twice the size and weight. It's been a long time since I could find a laptop with great performance in a small package that was also good quality and reliable. This is it!
A really good laptop, I just switched to this from the old Latitude series, and this is a really good performer.
Pros:
a. I opted for the 13" version since the 15", though having a bigger screen and a CD/DVD drive, is just too heavy.
b. The 13" has a very good screen, a SSD (in my config), back-lit kbd and a good array of ports (VGA, full HDMI, 2 USB 2.0 and even eSATA)
c. The core-i5, 4GB RAM and a SSD make work a breeze (for software development, having a SSD makes tasks much faster !)
d. The "good looks", light weight, good battery life and surprisingly good sound (not tinny but deep!) were very welcome.
Cons - a) Volume keys not back-lit -- nitpick b) No USB 3.0 -- tsk tsk c) The single headphone/mike jack sometimes doesn't work well .. the built in mic works just fine, but if I have used a headphone, sometimes the sound doesn't come from the main speakers after removing the phones. This usually happens when using a communicator/messenger software like Skype. - Annoying when it happens !
d) Worst offender IMO is the mouse pad which doesn't work well for multi-touch - two finger scrolling on a webpage is jerky. This surprisingly doesn't happen on my Inspiron 14R - I guess it's a software driver issue (how ironic!), but haven't been able to resolve it. -- Disappointing
All else about the mousepad and mouse click keys is good. The keyboard too has a good build quality, and pressing keys has a premium feel to it. The back-lit option has varying levels of brightness (as it should).
All in all, very impressed and happy with this laptop.
My IT department finally got me to switch from a Macbook Pro to Windows due to some added responsibility I had at work. I could order anymachine I wanted. Because I am an executive in a mid sized company, I needed something as light and fast as my 13" Macbook Pro. I choose the Dell Lattitude 6620.
My Impressions:
1. I got the i5 model with 4 gig of ram running Windows 7 Enterprise. It's pretty slow. Better than a Netbook, but nowhere near as fast as my Core2 Duo MBP. It does run HD videos from Netflix OK.
2. I ordered this with the 5600 rpm drive, thinking I would swap the 2.5" SSD drive from my Macbook pro into this machine. Nope. A standard 2.5" SSD Drive will NOT fit into this machine. Dell has switched to Micro 2.5" hard drives. I wish I had known this before ordering, so I could have order it with a SSD from Dell.
3. While I was excited to see Dell had integrated 2 finger scroll into the trackpad, it's slow, and sometimes doesn't respond. The scrolling is not at all smooth (I believe this is more of a Windows issue than a Dell issue). Almost unuseable. The surface of the trackpad was surpringly smooth however. The cursor does at times jump around on the screen as I type.
4. The lighted keyboard isn't bright enough to be useable....especially when I dim the screen for night-time viewing.
5. The screen is nice and bright. 12.5" is the perfect size for me.
6 While the 6 cell battery last a long time, it sticks out far from the back of the 6220. If you are going for "small & light" get the three cell battery. You will not be happy with what the 6 cell battery does to the weight and form factor of this machine. I can't even imagine what the 9 cell battery does to the footprint.
7. The keyboard is really nice. No complaints at all (other than the backlighting).
8. The brushed aluminum lid shows fingerprints very easily. The keys and wristrest are covered in a smooth slightly rubbery feeling material. Feels good to the touch, and doesn't show fingerprints.
Overall, it's just an OK machine. But coming from my Macbook Pro, I was slightly disappointed. I am sure the SSD would help with some of the performance issues. I HIGHLY recommend you order this machine with an SSD drive.
Good luck, and be sure to check out Dell's new Ultrabook before buying this one.

Buyers beware

No, I do not recommend this product.
I'd like to highlight the pros and cons of this model. Overall i am a huge fan of 12" portable laptops as i'm often travelling and need a light laptop that is small and light.
PROS: - Love the keyboard layout and buttons design. Previously had the Latitude D430 which had tiny DEL / END / HOME buttons. Love the keyboard backlighting and easy volume controls. - The HDMI port is very handy - Overall performance is MUCH faster than my old D430
CONS: - Our firm ordered 2 of these. First laptop had a faulty screen that doesn't display anything. Mine had hardware issues from the first week. - Constant blue screens and a failed hard drive in the first 2 months of use, yikes! - When i plug in my headphones to the side jack the computer crashes by displaying static on the monitor and shuts itself down in 30 secs. - Although I use the extended battery the lifetime of the battery compared to my D430 (which would literaly work for 4-5 hours) is dismal. Considering its capacity now when its new, it'll probably degrade even further with time.
All in all if you're spending $$$ for the cost of this laptop you can and should get a laptop that works. This model is far from it. Perhaps we got 2 lemons, but i would hope that Dell takes note of this and offers some solution to the issues i have to face daily.

Very Sleek

Yes, I would recommend this product
This is a very sleek laptop. I decided to fork out the extra dollars to get a 256GB Solid State hard drive and I am so glad I did. This machine is so light and fast it is a real pleasure to use. I bought it to replace my HP 6520 so the difference is outstanding.
Also, the machine layout of the adapters is very clever. The power socket and LAN sockets is to the back at a slight angle places it out of the way where they should be and all the plug and play adapter sockets off to the side. this is very nice and convenient. They keyboard also has a very soft and quality feel to it. This is easily the best laptop I have ever had, and is a cut above the HP 2530p I bought it to replace.
The only point of concern is Dell's method of delivery - the couriers it uses have no ownership of ensuring a smooth and end to end fulfillment process - I just went through a nightmare in trying to get my machine, almost to the point where the building of the machine is faster than the courier service. The delay was caused by poor service by the courier.

Love it! Much better than the comparable Toshiba!

"I love Toshiba, and have always thought they made the best laptops -- starting with my first one in 1990! Unfortunately, that has changed. I bought a customized R830 with solid state drive, the i7 processor, and max memory. When it arrived, it looked great. Then I turned it on. Immediately my dissatisfaction began. First, it took over THREE HOURS for this new computer to sit and load all the "pre-installed" software. It must have rebooted 40-50 times during this self-loading process. So much for plug and play. A few hours later, I actually got to try using it. Then I discovered my next dissatisfaction: the continual fan noise. It never shuts off or shuts up. It's always running, making a little buzzing sound that is very annoying. And that's one of the reasons why I spent so much money on the solid state drive -- because I was told at the time of purchase that it is totally quiet. News flash: it's totally not. My third dissatisfaction was the keyboard. The "chicklet" style keys are widely spaced. And they have a very "slick" glossy finish -- so slick that you can't feel them when you type. The combination of wide spacing and glossy surface provides a total lack of feel on the keyboard. So I called Toshiba to express my dissatisfaction about the fan noise and keyboard. My call was passed around like a hot potato. I finally requested a manger. He was rude. Bottom line, I turned this computer, and instead bought a DellE6220. I can't begin to tell you how much I love the Dell! The keyboard is awesome. Real keys, with a very nice feel. The Dell is TOTALLY silent, as a laptop with a solid state hard drive should be! When I turned it on for the first time, it was plug and play. Ready to roll. No three hour wait time for everything to load. And the Dell customer service was outstanding! After I placed the order, I found out I would be traveling out of the country the following week on a business trip. I really wanted the computer before the trip, so I called Dell to see what could be done. They changed the priority of my order to "hot," and I had it only a few days later -- for no extra charge! A customized laptop in only a few business days. Their phone rep was outstanding, and provided her name, direct phone number, and direct email. And she even followed up via email after I received it, just to make sure everything was okay. Toshiba, you're out. Dell, you're awesome!"

1st review of E6220

I always pour over review of laptops before I buy one, so I thought I would write my first review. To give a bit of background, I work at a university and am always looking for a light, but powerful, laptop. Unfortunately, these two requirements are often at odds with one another. I am also very concerned about laptop noise and can’t stand to have something whirring away next to me.
I have had a E6220 laptop for about two weeks now. I bought it with the 256GB SSD, 8Gb RAM, backlit keyboard and a SIM card inserted for mobile broadband. I also opted for the i5 2520M chip and the three cell battery to keep the weight down. My initial impressions of the laptop are very positive. Before the E6220, I had a E6410 and found this to be a good, quick and quiet computer. The E6220 is better in all respects. While the E6220 is light, it has a nice sturdy feel to it. It is considerably quicker than my last computer, but even with the three cell battery, it has a decent battery life. Most importantly, the computer is relatively quiet. By itself, when carrying out normal office tasks, it is completely silent. However, the laptop spends much of its time in a docking station connected to twin 24” displays. I think the graphics demands of the displays heat the computer up a bit, so I do hear the fan a bit then. However, the fan comes on and goes off again just as quickly – so it’s not bothersome.
All up, I’m pleasantly surprised by the E6220

E6220 - love it, great laptop.

Great laptop. Powerful fast and easy to tote around. I haven't had any issues with it yet. I'm a MAC person but have to use this PC for work - after using this computer I might buy a PC (specifically this one) for home use.
Downside is that you have to get all drives externally. Well it is portable 12" so what do you expect.

e6220 is great with a few design flaws
PostedDecember 8, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
I got a Latitude E6220 to replace an aging E6400. The new one is tricked out with 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD drive. It's fast at boot-up and to come back from sleep - vital facts as a consultant when time is money - and has only a few annoyances, one of which is a bit major.
1) I rarely reboot. I "sleep" a lot. If I know I'm going to be away for a couple of days, I might "hibernate." If there were no issues, I could go a month without rebooting until Microsoft forced me to.
But the E6220 doesn't allow that because the 6-cell battery release mechanisms - one on each side - inevitably activate whenever my hands go near them. I'll accidentally hit one of them, and even though it's spring-loaded, it doesn't retract!!!
Then I'll eventually hit the other one by accident, and within a short time, the ***battery falls out***!
I've only lost work once because of this, but it's the biggest issue I have with this.
2) Compared to Dell's old laptops, the Home/End/Insert/Delete/Page Up/Page Down keys are in different places/orders, so I often mean to hit an arrow key, and hit Page Up or Page Down. Regardless of my audience at the time, they learn some new words.
3) I waited more time to get a better screen resolution (and case color) on the E6400, but simply could not get anything above 1366x768 on this or the next couple of sizes up from this, and it hurts.
Pros: 1) This laptop is *fast* 2) It doesn't have the insane, offset keyboard and trackpad that most of the new Dells/laptops have so they can fit a seldom-used number pad. 3) Like most Latitudes, most everything works well 4) Unlike every other computer I've owned, returning from "sleep" mode is bulletproof, and works *every* time. This is likely due to SSD drives as most of the previous failures show no disk activity. 5) The screen resolution is no worse than a few bigger models, so if you're torn between the (more expensive) E6220 and E6320/E6420, and money/optical drive isn't an issue, this is the better choice. 6) I have the optical (DVD writer) drive, but I haven't used it more than once. I carry it in my backpack if I think I'll need it, but that's rare. Any add-on optical drive via USB would be cheaper and work almost as well. 7) The HDMI port *really* works with a minimum of fuss. When plugging into a friend's TV and watching Netflix, we were impressed! 8) I also have a new Macbook Air, and still prefer this 9) Eight is enough!
Pros:consultant who works everywhere, lots of office/visio work; otherwise remote ssh

Better than expected... But heavy.
PostedOctober 28, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
I owned other dell light notebooks for years including D420 D430 and E4200. The E6220 is closer to the D series laptops (with nicer design which is a plus) in weight and sturdiness with regular Intel laptop processors which are faster than the ULVs. Battery life is reasonably good for the size/performance.
There are stereo speakers with better quality than the previous models, but the sound is just barely reasonable for music listening. The microphone is also noticeably better than the previous models.
On the negative side, it is heavier than the E4200 by about 50% and a little bigger, which is very noticable. Regregfully, the extra weight and size were not used by Dell to offer a higher resolution screen. There is an HDMI port but no displayport. The system fan is a little noisy sometimes. The ambient light sensor that was available on the D and older E models is not available.

E6220 Pros and Cons
PostedJuly 30, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
My recent Dell was an E4210, which was attractive (in the corporate sense), good for standard office products, and light. Unfortunately, about 20% of my time, I use InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as some video editing software and 3D software, and the E4210 simply couldn't handle the load.
I have now had the E6220 for about two weeks. It is exceptionally fast and has efficiently handled all of my multi-tasking requirements. My unit has an i7 processor, 6MB Ram, and a solid state drive. Equally importantly, it has a registered +6 hours of battery life in a real life context. It is the fastest laptop that I have recently used including my wife's MacBook Pro.
The downside is that this level of performance (and slight increase in display size) has had a noticeable impact on the weight. As a frequent traveller (+75 days of international travel per year), this is an issue to consider.
Pros: extremely fast for multi-tasking, good build quality, non-glare backlit screen, long battery life, backlit keyboard, and no pointing stick (visually disturbing).
Cons: heavier than expected, design (the E4200 was a cleaner aesthetic and the Adamo was a legitimate breakthrough in product design for Dell), slightly stiff keyboard.
Overall, despite the weight increase, I am very pleased with this product. I did not expect this type of performance in a small platform.

6-Cell battery extends beyond footprint
PostedJuly 11, 2011
Yes, I would recommend this product
I just got the unit and my initial thoughts are good. I just wanted to add a note for those looking at the extended 6-cell battery to let you know that it extends beyond the back of the laptop. I would suspect the default 3-cell battery would be flush as shown in the marketing art. I was hoping for just a heavier battery that would still sit within the small footprint of the unit. By no means a mark against the E6220 but rather an observation I would liked to have known ahead of time.
