XPS M1530 - Great apart from the screen Date: 22 September 2009
Product Uses: business

ReviewI'm a developer so wanted a machine with a bit of power but wanted to avoid a fully blown heavy desktop replacement. When I bought I added 4GB of memory, blu ray, a 7200 rpm hard drive and the 1680x1050 screen.

I've been using mine for well over a year and on the whole I think this is a very good laptop.

Unfortunately it has one major flaw and that is that the quality of the screen is not very good. For someone who uses their laptop a lot the screen is of major importance.

The screen hurts my eyes, it seems to have a blue hue to it and there's something about the way it is backlit that I don't like. If you're using it occasionally then it's probably fine. I have to use an external monitor most of the time. I think the choice of a Matte screen would be helpful.

I've also had to have the screen replaced already once as the back light failed (unfortunately they replaced it with the same type).

The rest of the laptop, especially the design is great. The soft keys can be a bit unresponsive when the OS is busy and it can be slow overall although I put this down to Vista rather than the laptop. I do have some slight suspicion about the hard drive too, so will be replacing it with an SSD when Windows 7 arrives.

The laptop can run hot and if you are actually using it on your lap it gets pretty uncomfortable.

The keyboard is excellent and very comfy and the range of external connections is good.

I like the slot loading DVD (I have an early blu ray player which I've hardly used).

The remote is a nice touch although personally I've never used it.

The webcam is very usable.

Battery life is pretty poor, I'd estimate about 1.5 hours but I usually use mine connected to the power.

On the whole a pretty good laptop, especially the design, I just wish the screen was better, especially for the price....

two 24" external monitors possible Date: 12 September 2009
ReviewI really believe in the productivity gains of having lots of monitor space.
I was delighted to see that my M1530 with Nvidia 8600M GT can display two 24" LCD monitors at 1920x1200 at the same time.
But when it is running this way your laptop screen itself will be turned off as you can only run two at a time.
Both of my screens are in the portrait mode so I don't have to scroll as much for viewing web pages or text oriented programs.
By the way, this machine sucks under Vista, but it is sheer pleasure running Windows 7 RC.
Do yourself a favor and install Windows 7 asap if you are going to be using windows.
Only complaint would be that I don't like glossy screens and the computer does run on the hotter side.

Nice system, poor build quality, heat Date: 25 August 2009
ReviewI have enjoyed my M1530 for the most part. It is powerful, very nice looking, and light for its class.

However, I have several issues with mine. From day one, I have had some build quality issues. The keyboard and media control strip aren't flat. They seem to bulge in the middle. Since the keyboard bulges, it makes marks on the laptop's LCD. The speaker grille and surrounding area seems to be made to collect dust particles. It seems relatively sturdy, but there seems to be a lot of creaking in the palmrest area.

My other main issue is that the laptop runs extremely hot. If I've been using it for a little while, I certainly cannot touch the bottom of the computer without burning myself. That may sound a bit like hyperbole, but I assure you it runs incredibly hot. A laptop cooler is a necessity with this computer. Also, you need to watch out for the GPU, as NVIDIA's 8600M GT has a high failure rate.

Life After VAIO Date: 3 August 2009
Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, Finances, business, training

ReviewMy XPS is a replacement for a Sony VAIO which died after less than 2 years. I needed a high performance but stylish laptop.
My XPS arrived one week after ordering & I was delighted with its construction & design. The lid has a slightly rubberised feel to it & the dark blue colour, my only change to the standard spec, is a nice subtle shade which shows off the chrome Dell & XPS badges off well. The thumb piece that protrudes slightly from the lid is also chromed. It’s also wide enough to make sure my thumb doesn’t rub the webcam when I open the lid.
The keys feel metallic (not sure if they are metal but they feel like they’ll wear well) & the keyboard surround is brushed aluminium-nice. This also contains the finger print scanner. There is a polished black plastic panel between the screen & keyboard which contains the on/off & DirectMedia buttons as well as the volume & DVD drive “virtual buttons”. This looks like it could scratch easily.
I’ve read comments from others stating that the XPS was quite flimsy but I think it’s pretty sturdy.
With 4GB RAM & a 320 GB hard disk performance is great. I run virtual PCs for different software versions & the extra RAM really comes in handy.
The DirectMedia button allows you to watch DVDs without booting up fully & it works!
I get a couple of hours out of the standard battery, I didn’t want the larger extended battery sticking out the back. The screen is pretty dim when on battery but it’s easy enough to brighten if needed. On mains power the screen is sharp & bright. If you’re thinking of the extended battery & want a different colour laptop, don't worry that the battery is black. The underneath & back of the laptop is black so it will match.
I thought I wouldn’t use the finger print scanner but I use it all the time when logging on. It’s easy enough to type in a password but it’s just easier to swipe a finger. It’s only when I rush it that it doesn’t recognise me.
I really like the slot DVD drive. I’ve read concerns about what happens if a disk gets stuck as there’s no hole to manually eject it but it’s a very neat design (quite Apple-ish).
The XPS comes with a remote control for watching videos & DVDs. This slots into the side of the laptop so it’s always there but doesn’t get in the way. Really useful.
For the first week I thought there was no hard disk light, which I thought was odd. Turns out it’s on the front of the laptop next to the mic & headphone sockets along with the power & battery lights. The indicators on the XPS light up blue but are very subtle. Thought I’d mention it so you know where they are.
I’m delighted with my XPS. It looks really great, is well made, has good battery life & performance & doesn’t get particularly hot. There is life after VAIO.

Excellent computer Date: 22 July 2009
Product Uses: Gaming, music and video

ReviewI love this system, it's quickly replaced my desktop or everything (it's used as a holder for my external HDD so I can access it wirelessly, thats about it).

Pros:

I love the styling. The silver/blue looks really nice.

Fingerprint scanner.. so far my favorite feature.

Good balance of size/weight and performance. This thing is pretty light, but not so small that it's annoying to use.

Cons:

Having trouble with the TV-Out, but I've had nothing but excellent service on my other Dell system, so I'm sure that will be fixed.

64-bit system isn't completely compatile with some older 16/32-bit programs, but that's the same with all 64-bit systems.

I wish I had added Bluetooth to start with. Had to install the card, which wasn't hard, but it made me nervous trying to pop the little black cover off the top to install it. If you intend to use a wireless mouse, get the internal Bluetooth adapter. Much better than USB ones, and no reciever to break.

The speaker/mic ports are on the front, which makes using a wired headset annoying, if you use it on your lap. Another reason I added the Bluetooth card though, as most cell phone headsets will work with it.

ReviewI have owned other laptops and thought that a Dell might be a step up, however, am disappointed in the lack of quality of this laptop. After just two months of ownership my laptop touchpad has a big paint chip and will not pop back up. The speakers have terrible sound quality. For the price I paid I would expect a little more and would not just order a laptop online again."

Hardware Failure Date: 16 July 2009
ReviewPros:
Good performance
Nice Screen

Cons:
Bad Hardware
Crashed multiple times
Complete Hard drive failure
Gets extremely hot
Speakers have terrible sound quality
Wireless Problems

Review:
After having this computer for a month, the computer crashed and would freeze every time Vista booted up. Dell told me to restore it to factory conditions. Since then, I have had multiple issues with the computer randomly crashing and the wireless becoming 'local only'. Recently, the hard drive failed completely and the computer doesnt recognize that it even exists. Dell customer service is really helpful, but I wish the laptop would just work fine.

ReviewI actually have a larger and older Inspirion that I loved a lot. After having to replace the hard drive and a couple of other problems, I decided to get this one as a backup. It's an excellent machine and works as well as the larger one. The additional fingerprint reader is hard to use and get used to but once you get the hand of it, it's very helpful."

Good, but... Date: 9 July 2009
ReviewI purchased this laptop refurbished from Dell. It is nothing like they are selling now, have had it over a year now. Only 2GB Ram and 160 GB hard drive. It is slow and I dont want to put more money into upgrading. Mine has had heating prob. and got very very hot, but so far dell fixed the problem. I recommend getting a bluetooth card in the laptop, getting a bluetooth mouse is way better than a wireless one, and I can transfer music from my laptop to my phone then too. Overall I think this could be a great computer, just dont buy refurbished and get enough ram and hard drive."

great laptop for the $$$/works like a charm Date: 5 July 2009
Product Uses: gaming/great graphics

ReviewI bought the XPS 1530 about 2 weeks ago to play WOW/general gaming use. I was using an HP/Compaq Presario V5000 but at times that computer would freeze/not adjust well to high graphics even though it was maxed out at 4GB RAM. The XPS 1530 blew away my expectations. It has incredible HD viewing, the 4GB RAM that came with it is working great with WOW (no freezing of action, graphics look much better then the HP). From reading other people’s posts on the 1530, I have not had any problems whatsoever. The sound is pretty good; all the keyboard buttons function and are angled fine; I have no use for the camera or fingerprint reader so I can not speak for those items. The touch pad/mouse works fine- no issues but I also don’t really use the touch pad as I prefer my USB wireless mouse. The touch pad/audio bar near the top for sound and audio buttons are a great future. The little wireless remote that came with it is a different concept- quite small and I don’t really use it but it does work.

Even though I was used to XP and was apprehensive of using Vista based on other people’s experiences with it being a memory hog, I have not had issues with Vista. In fact, I am really starting to enjoy Vista even though I do prefer XP.

Overall, if you want a great computer with good graphics without spending the money on an Alien desktop/laptop or similar product, this laptop does everything and then some for gaming purposes. I recommend Dell outlet for the XPS 1530 as that

ReviewUsed this computer for a year. I carried it around everyday and used it rigorously, and it never broke down.

I only one problem with the machine. The DVD drive stopped reading discs, but a quick chat with Dell Tech support and a technician was in my house to replace the drive.

Love this machine. Highly recommended.

ReviewThis is a great computer for just everyday use. I use it for everyday tasks and have had no major issues so far. My complaints are that I have issues with the fingerprint reader and that I can't get it to read my fingerprint. I also have issues with the mouse and I can't always get it to click). Otherwise a wonderful computer."

ReviewI bought this very interesting laptop for my daughter for college. The reviews all raved about the precursor model. I bought a 4-year warranty because I wouldn't be nearby to fix things. It is operating fine at the moment, but the display had to be replaced within the first month, and at the eleventh month both the hard drive and motherboard had to be replaced! Dell definitely got the short end of the warranty deal, and my daughter has had to deal with the repairs. I will say, however, that Dell's on site technical support is outstanding."

ReviewThis is the WORST laptop I've ever had. Despite the great monitor Dell puts cheap quality parts into it. I had THREE hard drives replaced in 6 month. This is unacceptable for the system that cost almost 2000. The system is used as stationary and sit on my desk all day long."
